Nestled in Serangoon Gardens is Sun Ray Cafe, a humble pet-friendly café that is perhaps the first and oldest pet-friendly cafés in town, since its opening in December 2017. Not only are dogs welcome here, all four-legged pets are equally welcome.

While the café offers a great breakfast menu with classic comfort food choices, artisanal bread and hand-brewed coffee, Sun Ray is also a NEA-licensed pet-friendly café serving a dedicated menu crafted specially for pets, offering pet food that is full of flavour, and is also safe for consumption. They even restrict ingredients that are toxic to pets in human food, just in case your pet takes an unauthorised bite off your plate. Now you know where to order in a meat or fruit-based dog-friendly cake! Not only can your pet dine indoors and be comfortable in the spacious eatery, but the restaurant also provides thoughtful amenities such as pee pads, water bowls and leashes, to ensure everyone has a good time.

Dumplings, the bite-sized burst of flavours wrapped in a paper-thin skin, are not just easy to eat but they also provide the proteins, fibre (just a little), and carbs for a nutritious meal. In fact, they are part of the staple diet in some parts of the world. In Chinese culture, making dumplings is a cherished tradition that brings the family together, while its appearance carries the auspicious meaning of money bags! Whether you like them boiled, pan-fried, or steamed, these are some of the best places to go to eat dumplings in Singapore.

Dumpling Darlings

where to eat Dumpling-Darlings

With their fresh take on contemporary Asian cuisine, Dumpling Darlings – run by the same team behind Lola’s Cafe – has all the dumplings you can ever dream of. From The Original (S$8) stuffed with pork and cabbage, to Spicy Sichuan (S$8) and the Korean Veggie Mandu (S$8), they even have a Dessert Dumpling (S$12) of amaretto, cream cheese, and poached pears. This casual, cosy spot also serves up homemade egg noodles with selections like XO Prawn Noodles (S$12.50) and the Miso Mushroom Noodles (S$8.50). Their cocktail and natural wine selection, although limited, is just as creative as their dumpling offerings.

Dumpling Darlings is located at Amoy St, #44, Singapore 069870, p.+65 8223 9249 and 86 Circular Road, Singapore 049438, p.+65 8889 9973.

Din Tai Fung

From selling tinned oil to receiving its first Michelin Star in Hong Kong, Din Tai Fung has become one of the top places to eat Xiao Long Baos (steamed pork soup dumplings) around the world. The (not so secret) secret lies in its paper-thin dumpling skin which is folded 18 times. You won’t go wrong with the Original Xiao Long Bao and its steamed chicken variation, and don’t miss crowd-favourites like the Truffle Pork Dumplings or the umami Crab Roe Dumplings. From time to time, they’ll even have seasonal flavours such as the Steamed Chilli Crab and Pork Xiao Long Bao for the nation’s birthday. Keep up with them to find out more.

Zhang Ji Shanghai La Mian Xiao Long Bao

This popular Shanghainese dumpling store run by Nanjing natives expanded from Alexandra Village Food Centre – where it drew long daily queues – to running their restaurant in ARC early this year. Even with its humble beginnings, Zhang Ji Shanghai La Mian Xiao Long Bao found its way to the Michelin Guide in 2023. What caught the attention of the Michelin inspectors were the Crispy Pan-Fried Dumplings (S$9.80) that were “filled to the brim and nicely browned on the bottom.” But what we love is the good old Steamed Mini Buns or Xiao Long Bao (S$6.80) for the pop of flavourful broth as we bite into it.

Zhang Ji Shanghai La Mian Xiao Long Bao is located at ARC, 460 Alexandra Rd, #02-23, Singapore 119963.

Besides choosing the fillings, you’ll also choose how you want them cooked. Have it boiled or pan-fried, or immersed in a bowl of superior chicken broth – deliciously comforting. Try the Pork Dumpling with Egg (S$11.80 for five pieces) which sees juicy pan-fried dumplings on top of an egg or the Fragrant Mala Pork Dumpling (S$11.80 for five pieces) for a spicy kick.

Stepping into Fiasco by Juice, the newest addition to Tiong Bahru’s residential enclave, feels like entering a cosy café in Bali—non-pretentious, relaxed, and brimming with charm. The decor, a blend of retro and contemporary styles, creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that complements the restaurant’s ‘simple but better’ philosophy. Led by Chef Haran Kumar, formerly of Michelin-starred kitchens, Fiasco by Juice, presents a menu that seamlessly fuses Modern European dishes with vibrant Southeast Asian flavours, offering a dining experience that is both elevated and approachable.

Something we’d definitely be returning for is one of Singapore’s largest and most diverse wine lists, offering affordable selections for both wine lovers and casual drinkers. Our pick of the night was the Macon Verzé, Domaine Jules Desjourneys 2019, for its crisp green apple, white flowers and lemon notes.

The menu is a playful celebration of produce-driven cooking, with highlights like the Dry Aged Japanese Snapper, which comes with a beautifully tangy mandarin kosho-beurre blanc. Something even our friend who does not like coriander, enjoyed the Mussels, bathed in rich Thai green curry butter and served with house-made flatbread and a refreshing Thai salad. For something lighter, the Black Bean Dip with homemade flatbread and guajillo butter was also a great to munch on as the table conversation continued to thrive. Here’s a secret, the friendly staff were happy to supply us with more flatbread to go along our dip, when we kindly requested. Something that you won’t find on the menu, but Chef Kumar might be happy to whip up for you is his take on the Bebek Guling, with the richness of sambal and tender duck.

Beyond the dinner menu (available from 5.30pm-9.45pm), We’re keen on heading down for lunch (11.30am-2.30pm), drawn back by the promise of the deli-style Sandos in iterations like Lamb, Egg Mayo and Pesto Mozzarella, along with dessert options like the Balinese Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.

Fiasco by Juice is located at 21 Yong Siak St, Singapore 168651. Open Wed-Sun 9 am–11:30 pm. Closed on Mon & Tue.

After years of shaping the culinary landscape in the Philippines, The Moment Group has finally graced us with hayop (translating to “beast” in Filipino slang) — the much-anticipated “fine-casual” offshoot of the beloved Manam brand. Nestled in Amoy Street, hayop’s debut in our little red dot, marks its first venture beyond the Philippines. Not only does hayop bring a wave of nostalgia for the Filipino expat community here, but it is also a space where Singaporeans are introduced to modern glowed-up flavours of the Philippines in a way that’s never been done here before. Yet, it feels both authentic and refreshing.

Ambience & Interiors

hayop - Interiors

hayop’s interior is intimate, stylish, and without a doubt rooted in Pinoy culture. From the hanging lamps, to the wooden screens, and even the dish-ware in front of you, Filipino craftsmanship is woven into every corner of the dining space. Here you’ll find works of artists like Rita Nazareno, Mia Casal, and so many more celebrating the Filipino culture and arts, with thoughtfully selected designs, hinting at the land and sea elements present in hayop’s dishes.

The Menu & What They’ve Got In store For You

The menu is consistent with the restaurants story and ethos, blending traditional Filipino flavours with modern, sometimes unexpected, twists. Here’s a taste of what what we had:

Kinilaw and Lumpia: Kinilaw with raw Hamachi and Lumpia with mung bean crepes at hayop.

For ceviche lovers, their version of the Kinilaw (S$28++) comes with sashimi-grade Hamachi cured in spiced coconut vinegar, giving it a tangy, zingy burst of flavour with every bite. Even with the coconut vinegar cutting through the dish, we appreciated how we could still taste the clean and fresh fish towards the end of the bite. For the ultimate light snack, the Lumpia (S$14++for 2pcs) is hayop’s house-made spring rolls that are delicate yet packed with flavour, thanks to the roasted baby carrots and soy-braised jackfruit. The real MVP, though, is the sweet soy garlic lumpia sauce—umami at its finest.

Ensaladang Hayop and Manam’s House Crispy Sisig: Ensaladang Hayop salad and crispy pork sisig at hayop.

And, of course, there’s the sisig. Manam’s House Crispy Sisig (S$22++), made from pork jowl and cheek, is served sizzling, with fried garlic and red chili, and it’s exactly the kind of dish that’ll make you nostalgic if you’ve ever had a plate of this in Manila. Don’t skip the calamansi—it lifts the whole dish to a new level, balancing the rich, crispy pork with a citrusy freshness. Looking for something light and refreshing ? The Ensaladang Hayop (S$14++) is a delightful mix of winged beans, red radish, and pickled watermelon rind, tossed in a salted egg yolk vinaigrette. Topped with salted egg white crumble, each bite features that familiar hayop zing.

Manam’s Crispy Palabok and Inasal na Panga: Crispy Palabok noodles and grilled maguro jaw at hayop.

Another standout is the Manam’s Crispy Palabok (S$26++), a staple Filipino noodle dish, but hayop flips the script with crispy glass noodles that sizzle as the shrimp and annatto sauce is poured over. Topped with charred baby cuttlefish, tiger prawns, and crispy garlic, it’s a rich, comforting plate that’ll satisfy any craving for something savoury. Whilst the hearty Inasal na Panga (S$34++) is a flavour-packed dish with charcoal-grilled maguro jaw; It combines a perfectly charred exterior with tender meat. Pair it with their watermelon atsara for a crunchy, salty twist that’s sure to please both Filipino and Singaporean palates.

Halo-Halo and Buko Pie: Halo-Halo shaved ice dessert and Buko Pie with coconut filling at hayop.

Don’t forget dessert! The Halo-Halo (S$18++), a beloved Filipino dessert, is a must-try.A medley of ube, leche flan, jellies, and more, this dessert is like a Filipino ice kachang. It’s the kind of sweet, colourful mess you mix together, and each spoonful tastes better than the last. Pro tip: pour over the evaporated milk for that extra creamy goodness. And if you’ve still got space (or a second stomach for sweets), the Buko Pie ($14++) is another gem. Imagine an apple pie, but with young coconut filling. The buttery crumble on top and coconut whipped cream make this dessert cozy and familiar, despite its petite size.

hayop is located at 104 Amoy St, Singapore 069924, p. +65 8028 9012. Open Tue-Sat 5pm–10pm.

In Japanese cuisine, food transcends mere sustenance, embodying cultural significance and reflecting deep-rooted principles and philosophies. Beyond sushi, ramen, and yakiniku, Chef Takayama channels his expertise into perfecting Kamameshi, bringing this cherished dish to Singapore for all to savour at Hanare by Takayama. With fans raving about this delightful creation, we go behind the scenes to explore Kamameshi at Hanare by Takayama.

Not Your Usual Claypot Rice

Corn and Eel Kamameshi Hanare by Takayama

While many are familiar with the concept of claypot rice, Kamameshi offers something beyond simply cooking rice in a pot. This cherished dish holds historical significance and embodies the resilience and community spirit that helped rebuild Japan after the Great Kanto Earthquake. The term “Kamameshi” translates to “kettle rice,” a nod to the time when people shared meals from iron pots (kama) after the disaster. The modern version we enjoy today takes inspiration from “Kamameshi Haru” in Asakusa, where the one-person kettle became popularised.

Hanare by Takayama interior

The iron pot dish is easy enough to make at home, but in the hands of experienced chefs like Chef Taro Takayama, it transforms into an exquisite delight, bursting with umami and the fresh flavours of the season. Lucky for us, a comforting pot of Kamameshi is easily within reach in Singapore at Hanare by Takayama. The restaurant even pays homage to Kamameshi every first Monday of the month on Kamameshi Day, offering 20% off all Kamameshi (a la carte/set, starting from September).

The menu features premium selections like Unagi Kamameshi and Wagyu Kamameshi, as well as options such as Salmon and Ikura Kamameshi, Chicken Kamameshi, and Braised Pork Belly Kamameshi, all available for both lunch and dinner. For a true feast, indulge in the Dinner Set Menu for two, which includes some of the restaurant’s best dishes, such as a sashimi platter, snow crab chawanmushi, grilled proteins, a dessert and of course, the signature Kamameshi.

Crafting Excellence in an Iron Pot (Kama)

salmon ikura kamameshi hanare by takayama

Embracing the Japanese culinary philosophy of Shun (旬), Kamameshi embraces our connection with nature by capturing the essence of regional specialties and using fresh, seasonal ingredients at their peak. Because of this, Kamameshi varies from region to region, with each locale utilising location-specific ingredients like fish, vegetables, or mushrooms. This dish showcases a region’s produce and culinary traditions, which is why locals take great pride in their unique variations.

Similarly, Chef Taro Takayama takes immense pride in his version of Kamameshi at Hanare by Takayama. He uses koshihikari rice from Niigata, one of Japan’s premier rice-growing regions, known for its light and airy texture. The rice is cooked with a special blend of dashi stock, allowing it to soak up the essence of the house-made broth. Premium ingredients are then cooked over the rice using a generational Japanese technique, imparting a delicate umami that enhances the flavours of the dish.

Chef’s Journey

Chef Taro Takayama of Hanare byTakayama

Chef Taro Takayama’s culinary journey began in his hometown of Wakayama, near Osaka, where his passion for food took root. Kamameshi is one of his favourite dishes as it embodies the warmth and comfort of communal dining while showcasing the time-honoured cooking technique of preparing rice in a kamado or donabe. Bringing his experiences from three-star Michelin restaurants in Osaka and the Japanese Ambassador’s residence in Singapore, Chef Takayama continues to hone his craft, making his signature Kamameshi accessible to everyone.

Mastering the Art with Chef’s Signature Techniques

To provide the best quality at an affordable price, Chef Taro Takayama meticulously crafts his special dashi, simmered for up to two hours, combining it with fresh ingredients such as freshwater eel from Kagoshima, salmon, Miyazaki wagyu, and more. Premium ingredients like awabi are slow-cooked in sake for four hours and drizzled with abalone liver sauce for an extra punch of umami. To top it off, he adds seasonal vegetables, presenting a delicious pot of Kamameshi bursting with flavours.

Besides ingredients, Chef Taro Takayama pays close attention to the cooking process, ensuring that the Kamameshi is slow-cooked over medium heat. His secret technique? Letting the pot steam for 10 minutes before opening the lid, so the rice becomes perfectly plump and flavourful.

Try it At Home

For home cooks eager to bring the magic of Kamameshi into their kitchens, Chef Taro Takayama offers these tips:

  • Use high-quality dashi made from kelp and bonito flakes.
  • Select fresh ingredients in order to get rich, authentic flavours.
  • Slow-cook over medium heat for best results.
  • Keep the lid on for about 10 minutes after cooking to achieve tasty, plump rice.

And if it’s Hanare by Takayama’s flavourful pot of goodness that you’re craving, don’t forget that Kamameshi Day takes place every first Monday of the month!
