As the year winds down, that familiar craving for a getaway starts to set in – one where we can sink our toes into warm sand, feel the breeze in our hair, and bask in the sun before taking a refreshing dip in the sea. For most Singaporeans, this usually means a quick trip to nearby islands like Bali or Thailand’s popular spots like Phuket or Krabi. But this time, we decided to venture to the serene shores of Koh Samui.

Arrival & First Impressions

Just 15 minutes from Samui Airport, Marasca Samui seamlessly blends cultural artistry with modern comfort, making it a versatile haven for every traveler. True to its name—derived from the iconic Marasca cherry—the resort promises an unforgettable stay filled with ‘cherry-on-top’ moments, whether you’re planning a family retreat or seeking a vibrant party atmosphere. The resort’s app also makes it easy to book and explore all the available facilities right at your fingertips.

Interiors, Design & Rooms

True to its ethos of “The Feeling of Home,” Marasca Samui offers high-quality amenities and intimate spaces throughout the resort. From the moment you step into the lobby, you’re greeted by chic interiors that are more than just aesthetically pleasing—they’re a celebration of Thai artistry. The resort’s mission to bring local artists to the forefront is evident in every corner, with commissioned pieces that add a distinct touch to the space.

homey room at Marasca Samui
HOMEY Room

The resort boasts 62 meticulously designed rooms and suites, each providing a unique experience tailored to ensure guests reconnect with themselves. I stayed in the HOMEY room, a cosy space that marries contemporary design with traditional Thai touches. The room was thoughtfully equipped with soft linens, a balcony, and a Krajood beach bag—just in case you forgot yours. Modern amenities like a Nespresso machine, Marshall speaker, hair dryer, and steam iron are all at your disposal, along with teas and cutlery for those quiet moments in. The attention to detail extends to the two pairs of slippers provided—rubber for the beach, and bathroom slippers for indoor comfort.

The bathroom was undeniably the focal point of the room. Besides the well-lit vanity area with his-and-her sinks, the separate shower area featured a stunning round bathtub and a rain shower, perfect for unwinding after a day in the sun. ot to mention the automated bidet toilet—a luxurious touch that elevates the experience.

The Beach Vibes & Cabanas Koh Samui Beach Club

Cabanas Beach Club during the Day - Marasca Samui

But the real showstopper? The beach. Central to Marasca Samui’s social scene is the Cabanas Koh Samui Beach Club, where signature bright blue and white striped prints create a lively yet laid-back atmosphere. The club is dotted with lounge chairs, seaside bean bags, and sheltering umbrellas, offering the perfect spot to soak up the sun. By day, indulge in casual bites, local stir-fried dishes, or celebrated pizzas from seven food stations (don’t miss the satay) including Via Emilia Pizzeria. Indulge in a couple of scoops from the sundae station for a sweet poolside moment. The Beach Bar complements the culinary offerings with an extensive selection of drinks, from refreshing daytime sips to sophisticated evening cocktails. But when in Thailand, nothing beats fresh coconut water—refreshing and authentic.

Cabanas beach club at night

As night falls, the club transforms into a vibrant entertainment hub with live DJ sets, saxophone players, dancers, and beachside fire shows. Signature events like ‘Daydream at Cabanas’ and ‘Beso Del Sol’ brunches keep the energy high. Guests can also participate in wellness activities, arts and crafts workshops, and even beach clean-ups, making it a well-rounded experience for everyone.

Facilities & Activities

Marasca Samui offers a diverse range of workshops, fitness classes, and other activities to keep you engaged throughout your stay. From Rise & Shine Yoga and Sound Healing to Muay Thai, beach runs, and the Krajood Bag DIY Workshop, there’s something for everyone. We particularly enjoyed the pizza-making workshop—a fun and delicious experience. Health enthusiasts will appreciate the Homegrown Hour, where freshly made juices from the hotel’s organic garden are served—a refreshing way to start the day. A cure for your boredom, there a recreation room by the lobby where you can borrow their Nintendo Switch, PS5 and other board games anytime too!

Facilities & Activities - Marasca Samui

For those looking to relax and rejuvenate, the spa is a must-visit. We indulged in the Marasca Signature Massage, a luxurious treatment that combines Thai, Swedish, and Lomi Lomi techniques. A special shoutout to our therapist, Natacha, who worked wonders with her expert stretching and massaging techniques, even incorporating lymphatic drainage. Every muscle, down to our fingers, was thoroughly pampered.

Commitment to Sustainability & Marine Biodiversity

Marasca Samui - art

The resort also features a “Wisdom of the Sea” art exhibition, which showcases the work of Thai artists and emphasises marine biodiversity and sustainable practices. This exhibition spans nine distinct areas within the resort, each focusing on different aspects of marine life, local craftsmanship, and environmental challenges. Through mediums like bamboo weaving, batik artistry, and ceramic art, the exhibition highlights the rich cultural traditions of the southern Thai community while raising awareness of the environmental impact of plastic waste on marine ecosystems. Marasca Samui is also the first resort in ASEAN to receive the Fitwel Design certification and is also pursuing LEED certification.

A Minor Setback

One con of staying at Marasca Samui is the occasional sound of planes overhead. But in a place as beautiful as Koh Samui, this is a minor inconvenience that fades into the background as you immerse yourself in the resort’s offerings.

Marasca Samui is located at 159/104 Moo 2 Bophut Sub District, District, Surat Thani 84320, Thailand, p. +66 77 953 555. For more information, bookings, and special offers, please visit their website.

Think about Raffles Place and you’ll think about vibrant energy, towering skyscrapers, and the multitude of offices within the CBD. Sense of homeliness? Hardly. Yet our weekend stay for this review at one aparthotel proved otherwise. Set within the concrete jungle, Citadines Raffles Place is The Ascott Limited’s flagship serviced apartment, offering 299 rooms, including studio, one- and two-bedroom units, and loft apartments ideal for long term stays.

The ensuite apartments are designed for both functionality and comfort, with most rooms (above basic rooms) equipped with a kitchenette. And they welcome everyone in the family, including furkids too! More than just a comfortable place to stay (no lack of choices for that in this area), Citadines brings its unique touch to the pet-friendly serviced apartment you can call home in the CBD. Even though the aparthotel is designed for business travellers and longer-staying guests (minimum of six nights), our 3D2N stay allowed us to fully experience Citadines Raffles Place.

Location

Citadines Raffles Place Pool

From Raffles Place MRT, all it took was a short two-minute walk to get to CapitaSpring, where Citadines Raffles Place is located. Within the same building, you’ll find the Market Street hawker centre, restaurants like Tsukimi Hamburg on the first floor, Sol & Luna on the 17th floor and Kaarla and Oumi on the 51st floor. With Boat Quay just across the street and Clarke Quay about a seven-minute walk away, you’ll find an abundance of food and drink options at various price ranges and varieties, even on the weekends.

From the Lobby to the Shared Workspace

Citadines Raffles Place Lobby

Far from a stiff, business-like space, the serviced apartment’s modern and homely vibes greeted me as I stepped out of the elevator to the lobby on level nine. Even the check-in was personable and casual. And with a Starbucks coffee machine and a snack and drink counter by the side, it felt like a cafe more than a hotel. Furkids are welcome here, just make sure they are on a leash when you walk in public spaces.

review Citadines Raffles Place - shared working space

The lobby is home to commissioned artworks and one that’ll catch your eye is the bronze sculpture titled, Capitascape, which reimagines icons and landscapes in Singapore. Hang around the modular armchairs to appreciate this artwork or follow the Clouds installation into the shared workspace, where you’ll find massage chairs and a conducive area with different seating choices, to focus on work. And when it’s time for a break, reach for the board games and let loose on the plush sofas in the living area, just like home.

In the Rooms

review Citadines Raffles Place living room
Living Space in our Room

The one-bedroom premier room we stayed in spans 45sqm and is comfortable for a small family of three with one furkid. The aparthotel’s clean and contemporary design features follow through here creating an inviting and homely atmosphere. They even welcomed our furkid with a pet bowl water dispenser and a toy.  I loved that we could organise our shoes in the shoe cabinet, keeping the entrance clean and tidy. Within the living area, the sofa was perfect for lounging and watching TV, while the small dining area, and the fully equipped kitchenette complete with microwave oven, fridge and cooking utensils, allowed us to dine in comfort. As part of the serviced apartment’s sustainability efforts, plastic water bottles are replaced with a carafe, which can be refilled with filtered water near the elevator. Or, like us, just drink or boil from the tap, this is Singapore after all!

review Citadines Raffles Place premier room
One-Bedroom Premier Room

The room, with a plush queen-sized bed, boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a panoramic view of the bustling city. A writing desk and armchair by the side let us catch up on work when needed. The toilet was more spacious than we expected and we do love that it comes with a rain shower.

Citadines Raffles Place Loft Room
Top Down View From Loft Room

During our tour of the property, we learnt about the Loft rooms that come with a little outdoor terrace. Although they are not open for furkids, they are perfect for an alfresco breakfast or post-dinner drinks to wind down. But they do run a little smaller at 29 sqm for the Executive Loft and 39 sqm for the Grand Loft.

Pet Rules

Citadines Raffles Place pet amenities
Surprise for our Furkid

Pets are welcome at the serviced apartment as long as they do not exceed 60 cm in height when seated. Whilst they are free to walk around the property on a leash, make sure to carry them when using the elevator. Be a responsible pet owner and clean up if peeing or pooping accidents happen and make sure your pet is confined or not in the room when the Housekeeping team cleans up the room. There is a pet levy of S$40+ per pet per night or S$600+ per pet for 30 nights, please contact the property for a detailed breakdown.

review Citadines Raffles Place pet-friendly

The nearest open grass patch to walk your dog is Raffles Place Green, near the MRT station. Take long and leisurely walks by the riverside and walk to Clarke Quay for more pet-friendly dining-out options.

Amenities and Signature Programs

Citadines Raffles Place amenities
Top Left: Gym, Bottom Left: Fitness Corner, Right: Resident Kitchen Dining Area

For those who desire a larger cooking space, the property has a Residents’ Kitchen on level nine that comes with a complete set of cooking and baking equipment. The space is also thoughtfully designed to host private dining events, accommodating seats for 10 to 12 guests.

Wellness and fitness are one of the key offerings of the property. Besides a fully-equipped indoor gym, Citadines Raffles Place also has a 400-metre running track, a 50-metre Sprint track, a swimming pool, an outdoor fitness corner, and even a Yoga deck. Within their Signature active∞ program, you’ll get access to workout videos and even curated cycling and running trails to kick-start your fitness regime. Want more nature? Head to the Green Oasis on levels 17 to 20 and stroll through 38,000 plants, while enjoying the views. Perfect for a midday break or a quick walk with your furry friend.

Planning an urban escape or some quality time with that special someone? We love the idea of a city getaway, especially one with all the elements to rejuvenate our mind, body, and soul. Bonus, if we can just pack and go –  no passports needed. As City Nomads, we relish the convenience of modern amenities too. So when it seems almost impossible to find a moment of peace amidst the hustle and bustle of life, we were delighted when Oasia Hotel Downtown, Singapore by Far East Hospitality whisked us away for a weekend to refresh, recharge, and refuel. Taking us from the bustling cityscape to island bliss, this is our review of Oasia Hotel Downtown’s Oasia Wellness Getaway Package.

What’s included in the Oasia Wellness Getaway Package:

  • 3D2N Club Stay in Oasia Hotel Downtown for 2pax
  • Complimentary breakfast, all-day refreshments and evening cocktails at Oasia Hotel Downtown’s Club Lounge
  • 60-min body massage at Oasia Spa, in Oasia Resort Sentosa for 2pax (worth $383.68 nett) with use of sauna, shower and changing facilities*
  • Complimentary 2-way transfers with free admission to Sentosa Island for the body massage
  • Complimentary 2 pieces of laundry per night
  • Complimentary Wellness Activities
  • Guaranteed early check-in from noon or late check-out until 2pm

A Refreshing Time

Oasia Hotel Downtown open spaces
Open spaces: L-Lobby area, M- Open lawn, R- Rooftop pool

Checking in was a breeze, in every sense of the word, with the lobby flanking the open lawn on the 12th floor. The biophilic hotel strategically integrates lush open spaces that circulate cool breezes around the open areas. Whether lounging at the poolside cabanas or sipping on evening cocktails at the Skyline Pavilion on the club floor (level 21), it always felt nice and airy, almost like we were in an island resort. So lush, we sometimes forget that we are 21 floors above the ground until we catch a glimpse of the spectacular city skyline from the infinity pool. If that is not refreshing enough, head to level 27, where two rooftop pools await all guests. Perfect for relaxing in the water or working up a sweat with Aqua spin classes

Lush Inside Out

review Oasia Hotel Downtown facade
Oasia Hotel Downtown lush facade

Even in our tropical heat, being “outdoors” here still feels cooling, and we think the building’s lush facade plays a big role in this. Oasia Hotel Downtown, just minutes from Tanjong Pagar MRT Station, boasts a striking exterior vibrantly alive with over 21 species of climbing plants. Beyond aesthetics, the ever-changing facade provides tangible relief from the heat, effectively lowering the surface temperature by about 15 degree Celsius. Not only does it keep the hotel cool, but it also enhances energy efficiency. Good job, WOHA! All this greenery also encourages biodiversity, don’t be surprised to hear birds chirping or see butterflies flitting from flower to flower. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a squirrel scampering around.

Space to Recharge

review Oasia Hotel Downtown club room
Club room image

The Wellness Getaway Package includes a two-night stay in one of the 88 Club rooms, which offers a restful sleep on the queen-sized bed, alongside complimentary in-room healthier choice beverages and bath amenities from Australian clean brand, Biology. The 28sqm Club room brings a touch of nature through its natural wood and copper furnishings accentuated by intricate geometric designs. And the bathroom features a bathtub and rainshower that opens up to the room via a mirrored door.

review Oasia Hotel Downtown view from room
View from the Club room

Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a bird’s eye view of the Tanjong Pagar precinct; it was especially interesting to see the juxtaposition of low-rise shophouses nestled amidst the high-rise concrete jungle –  a reminder of our Singapore story.

Lay out the yoga mat in the rrom- yes, there is more than enough space – and catch up on stretching or sign up for one of the complimentary wellness classes which range from HIIT and Yoga to Aqua spin and sound healing. If you recharge best by snoozing, the guaranteed late check-out by 2pm lets you sleep in all you want.

Oasia Spa
Massage at Oasia Spa at Oasia Resort Sentosa

Enjoying the best of both city and island life, the package includes a 60-minute massage at Oasia Spa at Oasia Resort Sentosa. Two-way transport is provided, along with an aromatherapy eye mask to prime us up for the recharge. The firm and nimble hands of the masseuses melt tension with every stroke, leaving us feeling fully rejuvenated after our pampering session. We recommend the Muscle Revitalisation Massage for tight knots and the Detox Bamboo Massage, with a real bamboo, for aching parts. We also love how smooth and supple our skin feels with the use of the Kotoshima body butter and oil during the massage. Its light texture means we didn’t have to wash it off right after the session. After a leisurely stroll around the resort, we decided to head back for evening cocktails.

Pro-tip: can’t get enough of massages? Ask about the complimentary 10-minute neck and shoulder massage on level 21, near the Club Lounge at Oasia Hotel Downton from 6pm-8pm on selected days.

Time to Refuel

Oasia Hotel Downtown Club Lounge
Oasia Hotel Downtown Club Lounge

Holistic wellness extends to the menu at the Club Lounge, serving up fruits and healthy snacks for all-day refreshments and superfoods in its breakfast menu. As Club room guests, we made full use of our exclusive access to the Club Lounge, enjoying complimentary breakfast, coffee and snacks in the afternoon, and cocktails with light bites in the evening. To fully immerse in an enchanting twilight, sit at the Skyline Pavilion and watch the sky transform into shades of orange and pink like we did. Feeling peckish? Head to The Marmalade Pantry on the first floor or take your pick from the myriad dining options around Tanjong Pagar.

Oasia Hotel Downtown is located at 100 Peck Seah St, Singapore 079333, p.+65 6812 6900. The Oasia Wellness Getaway Package is priced from S$888 nett (3D2N for 2pax). To find out more or book, click here.

In the heart of Singapore, where the historic charm of Chinatown meets the vibrant energy of Clarke Quay, a remarkable transformation has taken place. The iconic Chye Hua Seng Wee Kee remittance house, a cornerstone for early Singaporean immigrants founded in 1936, has been meticulously reimagined by the award-winning architects WOHA. Now reborn as the exquisite boutique hotel 21 Carpenter, this stunning property seamlessly integrates the rich legacy of its past with contemporary elegance, offering guests a unique and luxurious experience that bridges history and modernity.

21 carpenter hotel Lobby

Just across from the MRT, 21 Carpenter offers unparalleled accessibility to an array of dining destinations and the vibrant nightlife of Clarke Quay and Boat Quay. This new luxury boutique hotel is perfect for digital nomads, couples, and corporate travellers seeking a comprehensive experience. With fewer kids around, guests enjoy more privacy and quiet time. For Singaporeans, it’s an ideal staycation spot, with everything minutes away and charming views of Marina Bay Sands, making it perfect for holidays like National Day and New Year’s Eve with spectacular fireworks displays.

Design & Atmosphere

The architectural firm WOHA has masterfully transformed the former remittance house into a luxurious hotel that marries history with contemporary elegance. The restoration, adhering to URA conservation guidelines, preserves charming elements like the 1930s Shanghai plaster facade and historical Chinese inscriptions, whilst the inside gives way to modern luxuries and aesthetics. The hotel’s design narrative is woven with poetic details, including an aluminium art facade in the Urban Wing featuring excerpts from original remittance letters.

The hotel meticulously preserves historic materials, such as the original Chengal wood, reused in various parts of the building. Eco-friendly features like 22 photovoltaic panels on the rooftop, a hybrid cooling system, and reusable water carafes and amenity dispensers underscore the hotel’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

Rooms – The Heritage Suite

heritage suite - 21 carpenter

Inside, the rooms blend old and new with custom-designed furniture, warm Asian influences, and inviting palettes. It was evident that our Heritage Suite was designed for a balance of stimulation and relaxation – featuring a dedicated living area with a dining table, TV, and a signature Wet Bar stocked with minibar goodies and a selection of teas and Bacha Coffee. The living room was also gracefully partitioned from the plush king-sized bedroom. Unfortunately for couch potatoes, this would mean no movies in bed! Nonetheless, the ensuite bathroom made up for the minor inconvenience with a rain-shower and marble-tiled tub, for folks who love a soak. The Smith & Co. body products were a plus too!

Dining

kee's

Kee’s, a Neo-Bistro & Bar led by Michelin-starred Chef Andrew Walsh, keeps things casual yet elevated with bar bites, local-inspired grub, and other bistro fare. It’s also where the morning semi-buffet is served. In the evening, the restaurant comes alive with crowds enjoying cocktails, beers, wines, and live DJ performances. Weekday lunch sets feature a 2-course meal at S$36++ and a 3-course meal at S$40++. The restaurant also offers in-room dining for hotel guests, with dishes like Kee’s Bacon Cheese Burger (S$26++)with grain-fed Angus beef, bacon ketchup, and straight-cut fries, and Seafood Laksa (S$30) with North Atlantic scallop and tiger prawn.

Other Facilities

The hotel features exclusive spaces for relaxation, such as the intimate Garden Terrace on level 3, perfect for quiet moments or small gatherings amongst greenery. Though not quite spacious, and designed just for lounging the Rooftop Infinity Pool & Lounge offers breath-taking views of the Marina Bay skyline. These spots also provide a quiet corner to take meetings from or enjoying a relaxing date with a good book. Needless to say, these thoughtfully designed spaces provide a serene escape from the city’s hustle.

Facilities at 21 Carpenter

From seamless check-ins to personalised recommendations and the availability of Linus bicycles for exploring nearby areas, the efficiency in guest services enhances the overall guest experience. Whether you’re in Singapore for business or leisure, 21 Carpenter with its thoughtful design, and helpful service promises an unparalleled experience right in the heart of the city.

Perched gracefully along the pristine sands of Jimbaran Bay, entering the InterContinental Bali Resort instantly immerses you in a seamless blend of Balinese cultural richness and understated luxury. As the first hotel to grace these unspoiled shores, the resort has redefined luxurious indulgence in Bali –  masterfully integrating the island’s rich cultural tapestry into every facet of its hospitality, creating an experience that both respects and celebrates the island’s heritage.

Elegant Interiors and Luxurious Rooms

The entrance welcomes visitors with an embrace of lush tranquillity, setting the stage for a stay marked by both repose and exploration. The lobby is graced by an elegant sculpture of the Goddess of Dance, opening up to sweeping views of immaculately manicured gardens cascading into the blue of Jimbaran Bay. Here, every corner  whispers of Bali’s spiritual depth and aesthetic elegance, inviting guests to uncover the island’s enchanting stories at their leisure.

Our stay in the Premium Mezzanine Singaraja Room was a revelation. The split-level design combines a cosy living area on the lower floor and a master bedroom above, offering the ideal setup for both families and couples. The space serves as a canvas showcasing the island’s artisanal craftsmanship, adorned with a spa-like marble bathroom and a mural that narrates tales of Bali’s artistic lineage. The room’s private balcony overlooks the lush gardens, and  offers a haven of calm, inviting guests to pause and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.

Culinary Journey

Dining at the resort is a veritable odyssey through Bali’s culinary landscape, accentuated by a commitment to local produce and traditional techniques. From intimate beachside settings like Sunset Beach Bar & Grill to sumptuous buffets at Taman Gita, the culinary offerings are a deep dive into the island’s flavour profiles. Highlights like the Babi Guling at Jimbaran Gardens encapsulate the essence of local cuisine, while European delights at Mediterranean restaurant Bella Cucina elevate the dining experience with finesse and meticulous attention to detail.

Leisure and Well-being Facilities

InterContinental Bali’s array of leisure facilities, including the iconic Nirvana Pool and the culturally inspired Balinese Bath Pool, reflects the resort’s philosophy of harmonising luxury with the natural and cultural landscapes of Bali. The spa is a sanctuary offering a holistic approach to wellness, deeply rooted in the island’s enduring traditions of hospitality and healing.

Standing as a beacon on Jimbaran Bay, InterContinental Bali is at the forefront of sustainable practices and cultural stewardship. The resort not only stands as a testament to the beauty of Balinese culture but also engages actively with the community, embodying a commitment to sustainability that complements its luxury offerings.

The InterContinental Bali Resort, with its old-world charm and inviting homeliness, provides a unique confluence of comfort and authenticity. Here, guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in the vibrant fabric of Balinese life, crafting unforgettable stories amidst a backdrop of unparalleled natural beauty and rich tradition.
