Just like every year, Singapore Design Week (SDW) 2024 is shaping up to be the island’s most immersive design celebration yet. Running from 26 September to 6 October 2024, this year’s festival theme, “People of Design,” highlights how everyday individuals contribute to shaping our world through the power of design. With over 80 events happening citywide, the focus this year spans four vibrant districts: Bras Basah.Bugis, Orchard, Marina, and the newly added New Bahru. Let’s take a closer look at what each precinct has to offer and the exhibits you simply can’t miss.

Bras Basah.Bugis: Everyday Activities Reimagined

Bras Basah and Bugis, Singapore’s art and heritage hubs, offer a thoughtful re-examination of how design touches the most mundane aspects of our lives. Curated by Hans Tan, the People of Design Showcase Series features 10 interactive installations that challenge how we experience activities like READ, EAT, SHOP, HEAL, SLEEP, COMMUTE, PLANT, DISPLAY, MAKE, and DESIGN. Some of our favourite highlights include:

READ: BOOK? (National Library Building): Explore the changing relationship between humans and books in an increasingly digital world. This exhibition creatively reflects on how we read today and how the design of reading materials and spaces is adapting to new technologies. Some questions you might find yourself reflecting on include What does it mean to read a book?; As physical books continue to matter less and less in our everyday, what are we losing?; Are we less aware of things, textures and space?; Do we become oblivious to light hues and tonalities? etc. You’ll find installations on level 1 (outdoors), and from level 7 to 10.

EAT: Transformative Seeds (National Design Centre): Delve into the future of food with this exhibit that focuses on culinary evolution. It explores the journey of seeds from plant to plate, looking at how we might push the boundaries of what we eat in response to food sustainability challenges. Expect a combination of art and science in this showcase of innovative food design.

SLEEP: Diving In (Naumi Hotel): Ever thought about how you sleep? This VR sleepover experience is unlike any other. It offers an in-depth look at the science and stories behind optimal sleep, combining technology and design to explore personal sleep habits and experiences.

MAKE: me(n)tal (NAFA Fashion Gallery): In the People of Design Showcase Series, MAKE challenges the way we see metal. Local artists, designers, and metalsmiths from J.A.B.O.C (Just A Band of Creatives) join hands to elevate metal craftsmanship in unexpected ways. This installation explores the versatility and artistry behind metal fabrication, presenting not only elegant furniture and spatial installations but also highlighting sustainable approaches to working with metal offcuts.

Beyond the installations, Friday Late at Bras Basah.Bugis (27 September 2024) will feature exclusive activities such as interactive AI workshops, food design performances, and a silent book auction. We recommend the Metal Rose Workshop (8pm-10pm) hosted by Baremetalco. Participants can learn to craft their own metal rose from sheet metal, right down to hammering the petals for texture. It’s the perfect night to explore the district’s design landscape while soaking in an energetic after-hours vibe.

Orchard: Nostalgia Meets Innovation

Orchard Road transforms into a creative playground with the Re-Route Festival, part of Singapore Design Week 2024. Curated by PLUS Collaboratives, Re-Route: Orchard (RR) explores the theme “Be Here Now,” highlighting the concept of adaptability. From 26 September to 6 October, over 30 design collaborations and programmes invite visitors to rediscover Orchard’s rich history while envisioning its future.

Re-think - Orchard

Highlights include Nostalgia Play at Far East Plaza, a whimsical installation that pays tribute to the 80s and 90s, and Adaptations: Design in Motion at Cineleisure, which reimagines everyday objects into innovative designs. Additional exhibitions feature modified kopitiam chairs at Chairs Reimagined in Centrepoint, showcasing the blend of tradition and contemporary social behaviours, and sustainable products at Re-think in Design Orchard. The festival also showcases Rain-Ready fashion designs by Raffles Design Institute students, inspired by Orchard’s history.

Anchored by the playful mascot Charrdo, symbolising Orchard’s past and future, Re-Route: Orchard is a celebration of how design shapes our world. Whether you’re exploring hidden gems, attending an Art Market, heading down for a Film Screening or collecting stamps for a Charrdo keychain, this festival reimagines Orchard Road with a focus on community, adaptability, and innovation.

Marina: Bridging Tradition and Future

In the Marina Design District, curated by Nathan Yong, the theme Neufolk: Bridging Tradition and Future in Design highlights the fusion of tradition and modernity through sustainability and culture. The Marina precinct will also host the District M after-party on 4 October 2024, with live performances, digital art showcases, and hands-on creative workshops, turning the district into a late-night design playground.

The Neufolk Design Pavilion at Millenia Walk is a design hub featuring interactive installations from partners like Arup, Ayer Ayer Project, and Bewilder, all focused on innovative and sustainable urban design. On the other hand, in Marina Square and Suntec City, six local designers collaborate with brands like Kawata House of Socks and HaveFun Karaoke to reimagine retail experiences and create futuristic retail concepts with avant-garde logos and customer interactions, experimenting with the future of retail in Singapore

Experience interactive kinetic energy exhibits with Kinetics Energy Play and Mooncycle Activations (South Beach Avenue and Linkbridge) that explore the balance between work, play, and sustainability, turning movement into a part of the creative process.

New Bahru: Hands-On Creativity in a New Design Hotspot

The fresh creative precinct, New Bahru, offers a mix of pop-up workshops and interactive exhibits, with a focus on lifestyle brands and hands-on design experiences. If you’re into making and creating, this is the district for you.

Postcard

Previously known as OASIS: Beauty Kitchen, the clean beauty brand recently rebranded itself to Postcard, emulating a world away from the chaos of life and an invitation into calm and sweet-smelling suds with their locally made products. Hildra, Founder and Chief Beauty Chef was determined to find a better way to healthy skin. So, she started Postcard, making skincare products from simple ingredients, without irritants, complicated formulations, and artificial ingredients. Even their packaging is kept simple and functional. Reach for their sulfate-free solid shampoo bars made with refreshing ingredients like kaffir lime, coconut, or a blend of essential oils, and complement with nourishing conditioner bars. For those who like it simple, the Head-to-Toe Powder Wash (from S$12) or Head-to-Toe Bars (S$25) will cleanse your hair, face, and body all at once – great for travels too!

Decibelist

 local handmade business Decibelist

The pandemic gave Brian Ho, founder of Decibelist, the best opportunity to turn his interest in music and art into a business, collaborating with local artists to challenge traditional perceptions about speakers. Turning up plain old speakers, Brian creates “art speakers” that will brighten the room. Looking more like statement pieces or a piece of art, these speakers are made to order and are 3D printed with biodegradable materials using minimal-wastage additives. Some are crafted with off-cut fabrics and recycled chopsticks, some are “alive” with moss! And if you get their Art Frame Speakers, you can easily mount them on the wall and even swap out their covers to match any occasion.

In this, over 200 kg of rice husks and eggshells, and over 45 kg of discarded coconut husks are reclaimed from landfills. Hidden gems and speakeasies captivate us, especially in the realms of cuisine and drinks. Yet, there’s an equally intriguing hidden gem in Singapore’s theatre education scene stirring up the drama world. Established in 2000 by the celebrated dramatist, the late Kuo Pao Kun, alongside current Director T. Sasitharan (Sasi), the Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI), mirrors the allure of a speakeasy bar, along with its exceptional offerings and a cozy atmosphere.

Despite its low profile among the general public, it garners immense respect from local and international drama practitioners for its distinctive educational approach. This approach has nurtured talents such as Golden Horse Award recipient Yeo Yann Yann and Grace Kalaiselvi, among others. What does such a theatre institute bring to the table? Why is it under the radar? We speak with T. Sasitharan (Sasi), and Koh Wan Ching, ITI’s Head of Acting, to learn more about Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI), the speakeasy of Singapore’s theatre education.

Quality in Craft from Embodied Learning

“Learning is done in the in-between spaces of uncertainty, dialogue and experimentation.”

Koh Wan Ching, ITI’s Head of Acting

“ITI’s vision is that of intercultural, embodied learning”, shares Koh Wan Ching. Training at ITI involves a dynamic exchange of ideas and knowledge between master teachers and students in deep experiential learning of Western Contemporary Acting and Asian Traditional Theatre forms, such as Noh Theatre from Japan, Beijing Opera from China, Wayang Wong from Indonesia and Kutiyattam from India. These immersions encourage students to explore the “unique aesthetics, dramaturgical strategies, and strict requirements” of each technique.

As Sasi describes, “Through training in Movement, Voice and Speech and Acting, ITI students recombine traditional and contemporary performance techniques into an original, distinctive psycho-physical method of acting.” To further support students in their experience, ITI includes Taiji as a paratheatrical module, which helps in mind and body training. This bespoke curriculum aims for students to realise the “vastly different sensitivities and sensibilities in their being”, giving them versatility and a broad repertoire to work with.

Theatre as Personal and Social Transformation

Sasi, ITI Director; Image Credit ITI

“They (students) are enabled to devise an individual professional practice routine, be critically aware, socially engaged, autonomous and work with agency.”

T. Sasitharan (Sasi), ITI Director

More than just a form of entertainment, theatre can foster personal and social change. Immersing in the rich traditions of unfamiliar cultures is a profound way to cultivate empathy, courage, and vulnerability.

“Students are constantly nudged into “safe spaces” where the intersection of the ‘contemporary’ and the ‘classical’, ‘technical’ and ‘creative’ and ‘structure’ and ‘spontaneity’ happen,” shares Sasi.

Through deep self-exploration and heightened self-awareness, transformation can be as subtle as noticing the shift of the breath or the embodiment of a ravaging demon by a young woman to inspire social change. Just as the father of the Theatre of the Oppressed, Augusto Boal, believes, “Theatre is knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society.” These are all part of ITI’s ethos of fostering human understanding and raising social and cultural awareness through excellence in theatre education.

Rising to Challenges

ITI End of Term Internal Presentation; Image Credit ITI

Despite its intercultural approach and the successes of its alums, ITI remains under the radar in Singapore’s arts education scene. Besides a genuine lack of awareness, the demands of contemporary theatre – three years of dedication and discipline – present a challenge in today’s fast-paced and expensive times. Even though students will graduate with a robust set of skills, a performance portfolio and a Professional Diploma in Intercultural Theatre (Acting), it is still not a degree – something which local parents and aspiring actors prefer, according to Sasi.

Although the independent theatre institute faces a lack of recognition and understanding, it continues to focus on training and students, steering away from cultural policies that may overemphasise commercial and economic interests and outcomes. Despite being underfunded as an independent charity, the institute remains committed to its craft, raising limited financial support for enrolled students.

A Look to the Future in Arts and Theatre

ITI Final Year Production Asylum; Image Credit Bernie Ng

“I feel that the arts remain vital to young people living in a world fraught with devastating crisis, destruction and injustice. That the arts offer a space to ask difficult questions and to care.”

Koh Wan Ching, ITI’s Head of Acting

Arts and theatre have always been a cornerstone of human existence, weaving stories, traditions and cultural heritage through the ages. So, yes, there’ll always be space for art in the world. In Singapore, the formation of the University of the Arts Singapore (UAS) points to a growing interest in higher learning for the arts. Wan Ching observes that while arts and theatre throb with vibrancy and diversity, it is getting somewhat fragmented. She credits local arts organisations like Drama Box for nurturing young and emerging tales with their Artivate and Camp O programs and The Necessary Stage for developmental programs in devising and playwriting, hoping that these will encourage the younger generation to find meaning in full-time arts education.

She also notes a growing need for spaces which support process-based work and long-term experimentation. Stepping up to fill this gap, ITI dedicated space for people from different disciplines to gather, dialogue, experiment and fail with their Residency at ITI  program to facilitate independent practice research and experimental performance-making within the local community.

With its heart in the arts, ITI continues to carve out a unique space in Singapore’s theatre and arts scene. Competitive Game Night

Invite your couple friends and turn the night into a double date with food, conversation and fun games. The Mind Café is a board game café stocked with a library of over 800 games. The café also offers packages with games, free-flow drinks and food (from S$17 per person). Kommune playhouse by 82 Social House, on the other hand is a modern take offering Korean Karaoke, console gaming, board games and computer games (from S$16 per room for two).

Gastro Baby!

There are two types of people in a relationship – one that does the cooking and one that does the eating. Whichever one you might be, we’ve got some options that will satisfy your gastronomic passions. We suggest opting for a food tour or a hawker crawl. Pick five of your favourite hawker stalls or centres and do a 5-course dinner, grabbing a bite from each one. Affordable and a good excuse to roam the streets of Singapore making new memories. Baking and cooking classes are also a good alternative.

It is often said that art is a long-term investment, and well, what’s better than investing in the future?

Gearing up for its second edition, ART SG, organised by The Art Assembly and presented by Founding and Lead Partner UBS, is set to transform Singapore into a global nexus of artistic innovation and expression. Held from 19 to 21 January 2024 (Preview & Vernissage, 18 January) at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, ART SG will illuminate the city’s artistic landscape with an exceptional line-up of over 110 galleries from 33 countries and territories.

Under three main distinct gallery sectors – GALLERIES, FOCUS and FUTURES – the fair’s second edition will host established names such as Gagosian, White Cube, and Thaddaeus Ropac, as well as emerging galleries like Kaikai Kiki Gallery, Asia Art Center, and TARO NASU. In addition to these three sectors, ART SG presents a new label this year, DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT, highlighting galleries whose programs have an emphasis on art and technology, including augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, creative coding and algorithms, and more. Don’t miss these presentations to view artists pushing boundaries and engaging with new areas of practice.

Alongside carefully selected artworks and specially curated presentations, ART SG will also feature dynamic large-scale installations, a film program and engaging talks by art leaders from around the globe.

Embracing Digital Art and New Media

Distinctive in its approach, through the guidance of Fair Director Shuyin Yang, ART SG continues to redefine the art landscape in Southeast Asia. This year, the fair heralds a new era of artistic exploration – after all, art in the 21st century is a canvas that expands beyond conventional mediums. Embracing the digital realm, new media, and the vibrant voices of a new generation of artistic talent, look forward to a tapestry of creativity and art through technological innovation, immersive experiences, fresh perspectives, and cross-border dialogue.

GALLERIES: A Pantheon of Masterpieces

Within GALLERIES, the mainstay of ART SG, 68 international and regional galleries converge to showcase multidisciplinary exhibitions and the fusion of traditional and avant-garde mediums.

All the way from Berlin, neugerriemschneider is set to present paintings, sculptures and textile works by Ai Weiwei, Thomas Bayrle, Billy Childish, Olafur Eliasson, and Andreas Eriksson, whilst London’s White Cube Gallery, will present a thoughtfully curated showcase including works like Move me (2015) by Tracey Emin, who is known to touch on raw, unfiltered emotion that revolve around the fundamental themes of love, desire, loss, and grief. Don’t miss Kaikai Kiki Gallery’s exhibits of Japanese artist, AYA TAKANO whose multi-disciplinary works have made waves at Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon (macLYON) in France, and her fashion collaborations and manga comic books and sci-fi novels have always kept her ahead of the curve and prevailed her relevance in popular culture. At the Digital Spotlight, Gazelli Art House’s Harold Cohen and Jake Elwes, trailblazers in generative and computer-based art, explore technological creativity as well as the implementation of AI and its potential to address social issues.

In terms of local highlights, ART SG welcomes 20 galleries from Singapore, including Richard Koh Fine Art’s showing of Southeast Asian artists and the best of fine art from the likes of Gajah Gallery, and Art Seasons.

FOCUS: Exploring Different Mediums and Artistic Practices

The Focus sector delves deep into thematic programs, emphasising the development of artistic practices, and the exploration of different mediums – especially digital art and new media. Artists like 2019 joint Turner Prize winner, Tai Shani will put forward immersive installations whereas galleries like Chi-Wen Gallery look into the cinematics of Taiwanese video art. The intersection of technology and art is also highlighted through presentations by bitforms gallery, with a selection of works made with generative procedures by Quayola and Refik Anadol, two of the most acclaimed artists working at the forefront of technology and machine intelligence.

Worth a browse are works by Wong Chee Meng, represented by Wei-Ling Gallery. In this latest series, the artist utilises motion-based Augmented Reality (AR), establishing himself as a trailblazer in the Malaysian art scene, merging traditional painting with the cutting-edge realm of AR. With the kinetic essence inherited through Kuala Lumpur’s Light Rail Transit (LRT) doors and windows, the artworks give the audience to engage and partake, whilst catching a glimpse into the nation’s openness, inclusivity, tolerance, and communal unity. Look closely, the artists’ works are often more than just what meets the eye, unravelling hidden narrative segments and stories with each layer.

Alternatively, Madrid’s contemporary art gallery, Sabrina Amrani is set to present a solo show by Spanish artist Carlos Aires, specifically created for the fair. The six new works from his series “Love Songs in Times of Crisis”, feature banknotes from several of the ASEAN countries, overlaid with pinned letters with lyrics from famous songs. The artist’s main medium, the banknotes, are a common signature in his works, drawing attention to the dimension of money as an instrument of power in contemporary societies.

FUTURES: Fostering Tomorrow’s Visionaries & Emerging Voices

In the FUTURES section, glimpse into the future of art with a dedicated space for younger galleries under ten years old. Here, emerging talents from 10 galleries across the globe unveil their works which have been created within the past 18 months. Never before exhibited in a gallery or institutional setting, these exclusive works done for ART SG leap into the realms of digital art, immersive technologies, and experimental forms of expression.

These presentations range from Artemis Gallery’s digital image-making through video, computer-generated imagery and virtual and augmented reality, to The Back Room‘s textile-based works reflecting themes of identity and independence. Check out the latter’s booth anchored by a fluorescent, multi-work woven installation by Marcos Kueh, woven works by Antonio Pichillá Quiacaín inspired by his indigenous identity and Red Hong Yi’s investigations into womanhood.

Shanghai’s LINSEED gallery will also be spotlighting a group presentation exploring objects and scenes that are often embedded with personal attachment. Look forward to works by Kiki Xuebing Wang, winner of the John Moores Painting Prize’s Emerging Artist Prize, showcasing the artist’s intricate abstractions that explore the disorienting relationship between distance and proximity through the constant rediscoveries of forms. Inviting viewers into a space charged by emotions and memories, the presentation will attempt to resurface the intensity of genuine feelings in today’s virtual world.

Needless to say, ART SG 2024 is set to promise an immersive four day journey, inviting art enthusiasts and collectors to explore, engage, and celebrate the diverse expressions of creativity shaping the contemporary art world. With much to explore and ground to cover, we reckon it’s best to start planning your visit now!

In the captivating mixed-media installation Home, British-Chinese artist Gordon Cheung reimagines traditional Chinese windows using financial newspapers and bamboo. The ethereal architecture alludes to homes lost in China’s rapid urbanisation, intertwined with the exploration of identity – a reflection stemming from Cheung’s dual identity during the 1997 British to China handover of Hong Kong. Presenting between states of existence, the 18-structure installation presents a visual narrative of looking from the past to the future through a financial frame.

Building on Boedi Widjaja‘s extensive ten-year exploration of the body, memory, language, and encoding, Immortal Words delves into our profound ancestral history and embedded memories through ancient words. Bring home a piece of the bio-art installation via DNA-infused ink vials dispensed through gachapon machines. Featuring ultraconserved words like “ashes”, “fire”, “to flow”, “to give”, “hand”, “to hear”, and “mother” in Southeast Asian languages, this installation was developed in consultation with geneticist Associate Professor Eric Yap. A playful project that explores the intricate connections between language, history, and contemporary art.

Gone are the days when music festivals were just about who has the geekiest sound system or which DJs draw the largest crowd. Now, the landscape of music festivals has evolved to offer something more holistic – the opportunity for attendees to balance the high-energy music performances with experiences that result in relaxation, self-care, and community development. Pioneering, and perhaps even charging, this new synergy in Asia is Hong Kong’s leading music and art project, Shi Fu Miz Festival by FuFu Creative and the La Mamie’s.

After a three-year hiatus due to the global pandemic, the eclectic house and techno festival is ready to rekindle the magic at the idyllic water-front Sai Yuen Farm in Cheung Chau Island. This year, the sixth edition of the festival returns from 27 to 29 October 2023, and is expected to host over 4,000 people from all over the region. In this edition of City Nomads Radio, we speak with Florian Melinette, one of the festival’s founders and organisers, for insights to the festival’s evolution and what goes behind creating an immersive experience that goes beyond music.

Give Florian’s mix a listen while you read along!

A Complete Festival Experience

Inspired by the best festivals across Europe like Dekmantel, Love International and Asia like Rainbow Disco Club and Wonderfruit, Florian, along with his partners, sought to create a distinct new ambiance in Hong Kong with Shi Fu Miz Festival. The goal? To converge a diverse musical line-up of local and international artists with entertaining daytime activities alongside delectable food options and enjoyment of the island’s pristine beaches.

Shi Fu Miz Festival

Over the years, the festival’s core music curation remains unchanged, but with growing support, the organisers are now even more motivated to bring a diverse range of artists to Hong Kong. 2023’s line-up sees international acts like Octave One Live, Antal from Netherlands, Esa from South Africa & U.K, Gigi Testa from Italy, and Japanese wizard Soichi Terada. Regional and local acts set to grace the stages include Singapore’s Bongo, Muto & Toppings, Emel & Katsu from Manila, Mogwaa from Seoul as well as Hong Kong’s Abyss Takeover, Sticky Fried Vibes Takeover and Casey Anderson & Misty.

“We have amazing talents in Asia to put ahead and a great synergy in between the different artists/promoters of the region. We can see incredible DJs and producers emerging from the scene and already touring in Europe.”

However, Shi Fu Miz stands out not only for its music but also for its myriad of various activities like the wellness-oriented workshops spanning yoga, meditation, breath work, and sound healing. Art and culture is another pillar here, with installations by Amsterdam’s creative Studio Raito, which has also previously worked with festivals like Dekmantel, Waking Life and Horst. Attendees can expect to catch several other Hong Kong-based art studios as well.

Wellness workshops at Shi fu Miz

The cherry on top, however, is that the festival welcomes kids under 12 for free and offers various activities and workshops to keep them engaged.

“We want to be inclusive, there is no age to start appreciating good music. On top of that, we have a unique venue with luxury glamping in nature bringing the necessary comfort for families, our daytime activities and workshops will entertain parents and kids.”

Set on a serene island accessible only by ferries and boats, Shi Fu Miz has always committed to giving back to its surrounding natural environment. Some examples of the festival’s commitment to sustainability include banning single-use plastic on-site, using biodegradable alternatives, using recycled and upcycled materials for stages, constructions and decorations. Additionally, this year Shi Fu Miz is partnering with One Tree Planted – one tree will be planted in the Philippines for each ticket sold in contribution to reforestation efforts.

Catch Florian On Stage

In addition to being a mission organiser for Shi Fu Miz, you’ll find Florian on stage. Operating under the alias MLCH, at the festival, Florian switches hats and connects with festival-goers through some groovy beats of his own curation. Having already played along international artists such as Pablo Valentino, Trus’me, Soichi Terada, and Jus-Ed, he’s known for experimenting with deep house tunes, and percussive rhythms to get the crowd tapping along to the beat. Catch a preview of his performance with a specially curated mix Florian did for City Nomads, here.

If you’re making your way to Hong Kong, Florian encourages you to escape the intensity of the city with a long weekend in a natural, music-filled setting at Shi Fu Miz 2023 (and discover a new artist or two while you’re at it!)

Shi Fu Miz Festival runs 27 to 29 October 2023, at Saiyuen Camping & Adventure Park, Sai Yuen, Dd Cc Lot 12, Cheung Chau, Hong Kong. Tickets range from HK$580 (S$101.30) to HK$1,280.00 (S$224) for 3 days. Free entry for kids under 12 years. Camping tickets do not include the festival tickets and are non-refundable. Keep up with Florian here
