As the Singapore skyline readies itself for the roar of Formula 1 engines, another kind of high-octane experience is quietly brewing above the city. On 3 October 2025, AFTER 2049 returns to Marina Bay Sands SkyPark for a night that merges crypto culture, electronic music, and immersive tech into one spectacular F1 weekend afterparty. And if there’s one place to be, it’s here.

Perched 57 floors up, with panoramic views of the Marina Bay Street Circuit glittering below, AFTER 2049 is more than a party. It’s the official closing event of TOKEN2049, the world’s largest Web3 and crypto conference, and an annual highlight for those who know how to mix business with pleasure.

A Sonic Journey Above the City

This year’s lineup is headlined by none other than Mind Against, the Italian electronic duo famed for their emotionally charged sets that span melodic techno and club-forward grooves. Fresh from releases under Afterlife and their own HABITAT imprint, their performance promises to be both cerebral and kinetic. A soundtrack to the future danced into the present.

Joining them are Ajna & Samm, the rising stars of Europe’s electronic festival circuit. Their Afro house-infused, back-to-back sets are already legendary, garnering support from the likes of &ME, Rampa, and ANOTR. Also on deck are returning favourites ANONM, Leon (FR), Milam and Mo-Shi from Hong Kong; a sonic tapestry as diverse as the city itself.

Immersive Tech Meets Music Culture

While the music alone would justify attendance, what truly sets AFTER 2049 apart is the Polygon Live 360° spatial audio setup. This isn’t your usual sound system; it’s a full-circle sensory environment that reimagines how we hear, feel, and move with music. For many attendees, it’ll be the first time experiencing audio like this: surrounding, moving, and evolving with every beat. As Polygon CEO Nico Elliott puts it, this will be “an unforgettable night above the city lights”.

The event marks the only Polygon Live production in Asia for 2025, adding even more exclusivity to an already limited-capacity affair. Ticketing is handled via Megatix. Streamlined, secure, and fast, just like the Web3-native crowd it caters to.

Where Crypto Culture Comes to Play

While AFTER 2049 stands on its own as a marquee music event, it draws energy from the larger TOKEN2049 ecosystem. A global summit where blockchain visionaries, builders, and investors gather to define the next wave of the internet. Previous attendees have praised TOKEN2049 Singapore for its dynamic community, seamless production, and thoughtful programming. The kind of atmosphere where billion-dollar ideas feel right at home. While the days are packed with panels and pitch decks, AFTER 2049 is where the real connections happen; where the community lets loose, and ideas turn into friendships.

Whether you’re flying in from Seoul, Tokyo, Bangkok, or Sydney, or just curious to experience crypto culture through a different lens. This is your invitation to join the global Web3 tribe for one unforgettable night above Singapore.

After 2049 is a limited-capacity event taking place on 3 October 2025 at the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark Observation Deck. Tickets are moving fast, with the second release going live on 15 September, followed by the final release on 27 September. For more information, head to token2049.com or @after20249_, and secure your spot now via Megatix.

Exclusively for City Nomads readers, enjoy early bird pricing at S$149 until 12PM on 3 October 2025, just purchase through this link.

A little dirt between your toes, a good drink in hand, and rhythms pulsing through the jungle air, that’s the spirit of Sunda Festival 2025. Designed to offer a different kind of musical experience; one grounded in nature, connection, and creativity, Sunda Festival 2025 is back and groovier than ever. From 17 to 19 April, it kicks off with a Thursday night warm-up at MDLR before unrolling its weekend magic at Sarimbun Scout Camp. A slice of nature turned playground for sound, community, and communion.

Before the Festival

This year, Sunda Festival 2025 sets the tone with Antal from Rush Hour Records commandeering the decks at MDLR on Thursday, 17 April. What follows is a multi-sensory adventure, regional selectors and international tastemakers like Danilo Plessow and La Mamie’s will soundtrack two days of exploration across two thoughtfully curated stages. Jurong Stage will shimmer under the visual mastery of artists like Jaymi McManus, @worm.grrl, and Jen O’Connor, while the Fred Perry-backed Nomad Stage plays host to underground legends and rising stars.

Curious how it all came together? Take a moment to read our interview with Sunda Festival 2025 founders Jake and Daniel, a pair whose shared obsession with music and meaningful experiences has carved out something singular in Singapore’s cultural calendar.

Ticket options abound:

  • 2-Day Festival Pass + Opening Night (17–19 April)S$183+

  • 2-Day Festival Pass (18-19 April only)S$148+

  • Single Day Passes (18 or 19 April)S$98+

And here’s something for our savvy readers: use promo code CITYNOMADS to get 10% off (valid for up to 2 tickets per cart). A small nod to spontaneity with a side of savings.

Kids aged 12 and under go free, and those under 18 must be accompanied by someone 25 or older.

Festival Essentials: What to Pack

Packing for Sunda Festival 2025 is part ritual, part practicality. Singapore’s tropical temperament is as much a feature as the music, so plan like you mean it. Here’s a curated list of essentials, complete with shoppable links to keep your prep seamless:

For Campers

Campers, don’t forget: bring sleeping gear, light jackets, and dry changes. No food in tents, wildlife gets curious. And that 6pm check-in deadline? It’s gospel.

a photo of sarimbun scout camp chalets in singapore

Pick Your Wardrobe

At Sunda Festival 2025, there’s no such thing as overdressed. Think breathable linen, flowy fits, and gear that moves as much as you do. Moisture-wicking basics work just as well as ethereal kaftans. And whether you’re in sneakers or barefoot, bring something you can dance in ’til the AM.

Getting There and Back

The journey to Sunda Festival 2025 should be part of the story. Board the MRT to Newton, then hop on an S$8 shuttle straight into the jungle groove. Skip the public buses unless you fancy a sidewalk-less 15-minute walk. No on-site parking means leaving the car behind.

A return shuttle from Sunda back to Newton MRT is also available for S$8. Be sure to reserve both your arrival and departure slots in advance. Grab and Gojek drivers won’t be queuing up in the jungle.

What’s New for 2025

If Sunda Festival 2025 has a mantra, it’s evolution with soul. Beyond the music, this year’s edition brings a well-rounded lineup of experiences:

  • Qi Gong and movement meditation
  • Cold immersion with Wild Pearl and Tundra
  • Zero-waste clay crafting, slow fashion jamming, and body rhythm workshops
  • FOMO HOMO’s voguing spectacular at Fred Perry’s Nomad Stage
  • Free Oat Lattes and Soft Serve by Oatly x Narrative Coffee
  • Heineken Silver’s Silver Hour with early bird beers at their custom bamboo bar
  • Aperol Spritz Sunset Hour with buy-one-get-one Aperol Spritz from 5–7pm

Food-wise, expect a rotating menu of rice bowls, tacos, hot dogs, and plant-powered treats from vendors like Just Two Friends, Hood Lemak, Sidecar Handcrafted, and Boujee Botanicals.

Respect The Vibe

Sunda Festival 2025 is built on collective joy. It’s BYOC (bring your own cup), cashless, and kind. Top up your RFID bracelet to go full digital, and either bring your own reusable cup or purchase a Sunda-branded one onsite. Smoke only where it’s permitted.

No cooking, no outside food or drinks, and definitely no funny business around performers or fellow guests. Be cool, stay hydrated, and treat the space like your mum’s garden. Maybe even better.

Before You Leave

That final sunrise? Don’t rush it. But when it’s time to pack up, double-check your gear and soak up one last moment of stillness. Sunda Festival 2025 is more than a party — it’s a pilgrimage. And when it ends, you’ll want to carry that feeling for a while longer.

Until next year, stay wild.

Sunda Festival 2025 runs from 17 to 19 April 2025, with an Opening Night at MDLR (17 April) and the main event held at Sarimbun Scout Camp, 70 Jalan Bahtera, Singapore 719921. Purchase your tickets with our promo code “CITYNOMADS” to get 10% off (valid for up to 2 tickets per cart) via sundafestival.com.

“Are you a good witch or a bad witch?”
“I’m not a witch at all. I’m Dorothy of Yishun. Block 302! “

Ahh yes, Singapore‘s infamous neighbourhood of Yishun is no stranger to the limelight – from wild boars running its streets to Former President Halimah Yacob’s big move away from the neighbourhood, Yishun has always found a way to make its way to our newspapers and social media platforms. Now, this storied neighbourhood has taken centre stage in Wild Rice’s reimagined production of The Wizard of Oz, originally by L. Frank Baum.

The Singaporean take sees the protagonist, Dorothy (a true-blue Yishunite), swept up by a cyclone and transported to the magical land of Oz. There, she discovers a vibrant community where the Munchkins enjoy an atas lifestyle in the East, while the Winkies in the West slog away under the oppressive rule of the Wicked Witch. To get back home, Dorothy embarks on a quest following the yellow brick road in search of the great Wizard of Oz, joined by a Hokkien-speaking Scarecrow, a Tin Man with a PhD in “cheem-istry,” and a sensitive Lion who’d much rather crochet and bake cookies—but alas, has no oven…or friends. Meanwhile, Dorothy must evade the Wicked Witch, who is determined to snatch her magical red slippers.

Wild Rice's Wizard of Oz 2024 - dorothy & toto

Playwright Alfian Sa’at works his award-winning magic, imbuing the production with humour and poignant reflections on Singaporean life. Through witty dialogue and clever metaphors, the play subtly addresses issues like the modern-day “slavery” of foreign workers, the gentrification of neighbourhoods serving up S$7 coffees with latte art, and our society’s relentless pursuit of productivity, efficiency and being the best. Director Ivan Heng’s flair brings the show alive, complemented by Elaine Chan’s catchy tunes and dare I say, the cutest ensemble I’ve witnessed to date. The production dazzles with its set design, costumes, and seamless projection and lighting effects, fully immersing the audience in Oz’s quirky charm. At nearly three hours, the show somehow maintains its energy, delivering a performance free of dull moments.

Wild Rice's Wizard of Oz 2024 - boon lay, wicked witch of the west, ensemble

Rebecca Dass as Dorothy, does an impeccable job at retaining the attention and engagement of the audience. Karen Tan showcases her versatility by juggling multiple roles, while Dwayne Lau’s Wicked Witch “Liza” brings attitude and style. Timothy Wan’s karaoke-loving, Singlish-speaking Scarecrow and Benjamin Chow’s brainy Tin Man kept us in stitches, but the show-stealer for us might just be Siti Khalijah Zainal’s sensitive Lion—a character so endearing, you’d want to join in his crochet circle.

This comedy is a delightful treat for kids while offering adults plenty to laugh about and ponder. It reminds us to appreciate what we have, rather than yearning for what we think we’re missing.

Wild Rice's Wizard of Oz 2024 - glinda, dorothy & wicked witch of the west

We only wish it were on a streaming platform so we could revisit it again and again. While that’s not the case, the musical’s catchy songs are now available on Spotify to keep the magic alive. A must-see in our opinion, if you’re looking for a whimsical, laugh-out-loud production this festive season, The Wizard of Oz by Wild Rice is the perfect choice.

Wild Rice’s The Wizard of Oz runs from 14 November to 21 December 2024, at Wild Rice @ Funan, 107 North Bridge Rd, #04-08 Funan, Singapore 179105. Tickets are priced from S$40 to S$95.

While the story may follow the familiar tropes of conspiracy, love, and revenge seen in many tales of great empires, what sets The Mongol Khan apart is how it is told. Set against the vibrant backdrop of the Hunnic Empire, this fictional tale unfolds in ancient Mongolia, drawing inspiration from real-life historical events and archaeological discoveries. Through the stunning nomadic dance choreography and evocative Hun cultural music, we were transported into the world of the fictional ruler Archug Khan. Alongside his trusted advisor Egereg and two queens, the moving performance navigates the complexities between trust and betrayal, love and sacrifice in impactful ways. The Mongol Khan is a gripping sound and visual spectacle that kept us on the edge of our seats – even when we didn’t understand the language. Although we watched the performance in Mongolian, English-language performances are also available.

The Story

The mongol khan

Adapted from the three-act tragedy by acclaimed Mongolian author, Lkhagvasuren Bavuu, The Mongol Khan sees Archug Khan’s legacy entangled in a story of betrayal, mistaken identity, and sacrifice. A celebration kicks off the performance, with the two queens, Tsetser and Gerel, bearing sons in quick succession. However, doubt surrounds the legitimacy of Tsetser’s child, Prince Achir, due to her strained relationship with Archug Khan and her secret affair with Egereg. As suspicions grow, Archug Khan crowns Queen Gerel’s son, Prince Khuchir, as his rightful successor. But what the Khan doesn’t know is that the infants were switched in a conspiracy, setting in motion a tragic sequence of events that forces Archug Khan to choose between the fate of his family and the peace of the Hunnu Empire.

The Production

The mongol khan stage

The Mongol Khan marks the debut of a Mongolian theatrical production in Singapore. This large-scale production is performed by an ensemble of over 70 actors, dancers, and musicians, including Hollywood actors like Ron Yuan, Mark Dacascos and Leonard Wu for the English performances. The Mongolian cast is led by award-winning Mongolian actors like Erdenebileg Ganbold as Archug Khan, Bold-Erdene Sugar as the advisor, Uranchimeg Urtnasan as Queen Tsetser, and Dulguun Odkhuu as Queen Gerel.

Even before the curtain rises, the intricate details of the stage set catch our eyes. Cultural motifs and creatures frame the stage, and with the vibrant music and dance celebration at the opening scene, we are immediately transported into the heart of Mongolian culture. The stage then seamlessly shifts from festive grounds to a place of secret trysts and battlefields.

The mongol khan masks costumes

Besides the stage set, the lavish costumes and intricate masks bring the story to life, transforming characters into vivid representations of their roles. Every costume, from the main characters to the dancers, is meticulously designed as a reflection of Mongolian culture while highlighting the characters’ emotional states. As the scenes unfold, the costumes evolve from the vibrant colours in the opening to plain, single-coloured tones conveying despair. Ornate patterns can be seen on characters such as the Shaman and the fox spirits, while dramatic masks on other characters enhance the narrative of scenes. I felt a slight unease seeing some masks up close on stage, foreshadowing the rising tension and conflict to come.

The Performance

Although we don’t understand a word of Mongolian, the actors’ powerful performances and expressive gestures more than convey the essence of the story. The clever use of dramatic actions, dance, and fluid movements vividly illustrates the inner passions and turmoils of the main characters without us relying on dialogue to understand. The emotional depth of their portrayals resonated deeply, connecting us to their struggles and emotions. But fret not, English subtitles are displayed at the top and sides of the stage and we love the poetic touch to the translations, which complements the artistry of the performance.

The Mongol Khan runs until 3 November 2024 at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands located at 10 Bayfront Ave, Singapore 018956. Tickets are priced from S$48, with performances in English or Mongolian.

Ever found yourself lost in the scenes of your favourite movie or drama, or had the overwhelming urge to jet set right into that world? Well, you are not alone. Inspired by the 96th Academy Awards and Netflix classics, we’ve curated a list of iconic destinations so you can recreate your favourite on-screen moments and be the star of your next vacation! Pack your bags and get ready to turn reels to real as we take you on a cinematic escapade to iconic destinations from the silver screen.

House of the Dragon

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you’re probably following its prequel, House of the Dragon, which delves into the history of House Targaryen. The story, set nearly 200 years before the events in Games of Thrones, was filmed in many locations in Cornwall and Spain. And here are three destinations from the silver screen to satisfy your wanderlust.

Castillo de La Calahorra – Granada, Spain

Destinations From The Silver Screen

Fighting dragons brought Daemon and Laena across the Narrow Sea to Pentos City, where they lived in a castle belonging to the lord who hired them. In reality, this castle-fort perched on top of a hill, is a national monument built in the 14th-century. Besides appearing on TV and in movies, this castle holds great significance as one of the first Italian renaissance castles to be built outside Italy. The privately-owned castle is open for visits upon request, so make sure to explore the well-preserved interiors, from the lavish halls fit for royalty to its basement prison cells.

Find out more about Castillo de La Calahorra here.

House Velaryon – Michael’s Mount, Cornwall

Destinations From The Silver Screen

With a 12th-century mediaeval church, an 18th-century steward house and a breathtaking castle on the top of the mount, which is Driftmark, the home of House Velaryon in the show, St. Michael’s Mount at Cornwall is a step back in time. From Archangel Michael to Jack the Giant Killer, every corner of the island is shrouded with tales and legends. Especially where the ley lines cross at the heart of the Mount, it is said to hold a unique energy. When you are done with the exploration, round off your visit with an afternoon tea at Harbour Loft, with the best Cornish tea and snacks.

St. Michael’s Mount is located at Harbour View, Marazion TR17 0HS, United Kingdom. Tickets to the castle and garden start from £26 (S$44) for adults and £14 (S$24) for children.

Emily in Paris

Even though the highly-anticipated season four of Emily in Paris is dropping on Netflix only in August and September, we’re already preparing ourselves for the juiciest season yet. After the multiple cliffhangers in season three, we’re left with so many unanswered questions, the biggest one being, “Will Emily and Gabriel get back together”? Between now and then (or even after), if you’d like a piece of the Emily in Paris action, jet set to these destinations from the silver screen.

The Palais Garnier, Paris

Destinations From The Silver Screen

Even though Emily and Thomas didn’t make it to the Swan Lake Opera in season one, you can book yourself the tickets for a date at Paris’ most famous opera house. The Palais Garnier, which took our breath away in that episode, is a Neo-Baroque architectural masterpiece renowned for its opulent decorations and ornaments. This 1,979-seat opera house was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III as part of his grand plan to reconstruct the city and now stands as an art and cultural heritage landmark in Paris.

The Palais Garnier is located at Pl. de l’Opéra, 75009 Paris, France.

Terra Nera, Paris

Destinations From The Silver Screen

It might be Gabriel’s dream for Les Deux Compères to earn a Michelin star in the show but it is ours to tuck into the Tagliata di manzo Emily, a sliced beef tenderloin dish that the real-life restaurant, Terra Nera has created. The charming Italian bistro, unlike its upscale on-screen version, has become a must-visit spot for fans of the show, especially since it’s where some of the most memorable and steamy scenes take place. Make sure to order the classic French cocktail, Kir Royale, which is a simple concoction of crème de cassis with champagne to “sip and do nothing as the Ferris Wheel turns.” Reservations are highly recommended.

Terra Nera is located at 18 Rue des Fossés Saint-Jacques, 75005 Paris, France. Open Mon – Sat 12pm – 2.30pm, 7pm – 10.30pm. Closed Sun.

Bridgerton

The Netflix period drama, Bridgerton, based on Julia Quinn’s novels, follows the lives of high-society families in the London Regency era as they navigate through romance, adventure, and scandals amidst class and gender power struggles. Through the eyes of the eight Bridgerton siblings, we go from the glittering ballrooms of Mayfair to the palaces of Park Lane and get an insight into the opulent lifestyles of those times. Thankfully for us, we don’t have to travel back in time as many of the destinations from the silver screen are stately mansions and palaces which are actual historical and cultural places in London and Bath.

The Danbury Mansion – Holburne Museum, Bath, England

Destinations From The Silver Screen

With season two centred around the Danbury residence, you’ll be familiar with the grand facade associated with many of Lady Danbury’s lavish balls. This is filmed at the Holburne Museum, Bath’s first public art gallery. More than looking regal on the outside, you’ll find artefacts from the 1800s, letting you fully immerse in the glory of the Regency era. The hotel-turned-museum is also open for special event hire, including weddings, so fans can celebrate in the grandeur of Lady Danbury’s world.

The Holburne Museum is located at Great Pulteney St, Bathwick, Bath BA2 4DB, United Kingdom. Open Mon -Sat 10am – 5pm, Sun 11am – 5pm.

The Featherington Mansion – No. 1 Royal Crescent, Bath, England

As a restored townhouse museum, No. 1 Royal Crescent is a step back into the 18th century with furniture, pictures, and items revealing the fashionable life of the Georgian Bath. As the luxurious residence of the flamboyant Featheringtons, the museum gets a lavish upgrade with pediments, rosettes, and a pair of stone lions adorning its facade. Get the full Bridgerton experience here with an exclusive tour to learn what life is like for the family and servants; they’ll even tell you the ins and outs of filming!

No. 1 Royal Crescent is located at 1 Royal Cres, Bath BA1 2LR, United Kingdom. Open daily 10am – 5.30pm.

Bridgerton Afternoon Tea, The Lanesborough Hotel, London, England

Destinations From The Silver Screen

As the new season of Bridgerton returns with new tea to spill, make a beeline to The Lanesborough Hotel for an exclusive Bridgerton Afternoon Tea. Set in the hotel’s Regency dining room, the menu sees finger sandwiches, pastries, scones, and signature sweet treats, inspired by Bridgerton Season 3. From “The Social Butterfly” cake, inspired by Miss Penelope Featherington, to a bitter-sweet treat inspired by ‘Lady Whistledown’, pair your snacks with the Bridgerton blend of afternoon tea or imbibe on the “Friends to Lovers Cocktail” –  a tequila-based nod to the long-awaited friends-to-lovers romance between Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton.

The Lanesborough Hotel is located at Hyde Park Corner, London SW1X 7TA, United Kingdom. Bridgerton Afternoon Tea runs £85 (S$146) per person, £95 (S$163) with a cocktail, £98 (S$168) per person with a glass of Champagne.

One Day

Following the Netflix limited series, One Day, the decades-spanning love story between protagonists Dex and Em, who reunite on the same day every year, brings us to Paros. In episode four, the couple travels to the small Greek Island, which boasts enchanting beaches, stunning white-washed buildings with blue accents, and charming cobblestone streets. Although often overshadowed by neighbouring islands like Santorini and Mykonos, we’re pretty sure Paros has stirred up some wanderlust with Netflix’s One Day.

Parikia, Paros

The port town and capital of Paros island, Parikia, sits atop a small hill and is the island’s bustling centre of life and commerce. Catering to both locals and tourists, you’ll find everything you need here at more affordable prices. Wander through the cobblestone laneways and explore quaint shops and eateries. Take in the town’s Cycladic history through its architecture, old churches, and the historic Frankish Castle (Frangokastelo), built on the site of the ancient acropolis.

Naoussa, Paros

The Greek fishing village of Naoussa is known to be a gem among the Cyclades Greek Islands. Some of the island’s best restaurants and bars are found within the classic Cycladic buildings of Naoussa, so explore the labyrinth of white-washed buildings for unique finds. Immerse in its seaside charm with scenic ferry rides on traditional fishing boats, then kick back for the night in a secret garden maisonette with a garden courtyard – the perfect romantic setting.

Beaches of Paros

When visiting Paros, be sure to include a trip to one (or all!) of its idyllic beaches. Located opposite Parikia, Krios Beach offers a stunning view of the capital of Paros Island. With sunbeds on its powdery sands, a beach volleyball court, and an array of beach bars, it’s no wonder it’s popular with both locals and tourists alike.

Four kilometres away from Naoussa is the secluded beach paradise, Lageri Beach. The 600m long sandy beach is known as “Paros’ secret beach” and is best loved for its clear waters and tranquillity.  Beach-goers revel in snorkelling and sunbathing under the cedar trees.

Take in the sun at Kolymbithres Beach, known for its moon-like rock formations sculpted by wind and water. Just a boat ride away from Naoussa, dip in its tranquil waters and explore secluded coves for a private beach experience, then head to nearby taverns to fuel up.

For adventure-seekers, Chrissi Akti Beach, or Golden Beach, is the place for watersports activities. Especially if you’re up for windsurfing, the spot catches the best wind to glide along the azure waters. And if you’re looking to bask in the sun, rent a sunbed or set up your mat anywhere at this vibrant beach destination.

London, UK

Destinations From The Silver Screen

This quaint neighbourhood café’s shot to fame came with its 10-second appearance in the Netflix hit. La Maison Highbury, as Cafe Belleville, was where the character, Dexter Mayhew worked in the show, and now sees flocks of people queuing up to live their London love story. Fans are even making plans to visit the place on the 15th of July – the day when Dexter and Emma will meet in the show. While reliving the destinations from the silver screen, tuck into the cafe’s selection of baked goods like pastries, sandwiches, and bagels. Do note that the cafe doesn’t take reservations.

La Maison Highbury is located at 19 Calabria Rd, London N5 1JB, United Kingdom, p.+44 20 7916 2351.

Past Lives

On the cusp of a promising career, Nora finds herself reminiscing on her life back in Seoul and her childhood sweetheart, Hae Sung, who reignites their connection through social media. Their reunion tugs on their heartstrings and stirs reflections of love and fate. The heart-wrenching film, loosely based on the director, Celine Song’s life story, is nominated for Best Picture at the 2024 Academy Awards. From the film’s iconic backdrop to the intriguing opening scene, travel in the footsteps of the star-crossed lovers around New York City.

Holiday Cocktail Lounge, New York

Destinations From The Silver Screen

The opening scene of the film is a recreation of the director’s memory, set in the Holiday Cocktail Lounge. The East Village speakeasy bar has built quite a reputation for itself as the go-to bar for stars like The Ramones, Madonna, Keith Richards, and even Frank Sinatra. Once a gritty dive bar, Holiday Cocktail Lounge is now a swanky watering hole with a grungy vibe, retaining its classic mahogany horseshoe bar, where the three main characters sit. The bar is loved for its classic cocktails like Gin Martini (US$18) or if you are in a group of four to six, Captain Strange’s Good Time Punch (US$60) may just be the thing you need for the night out.

Holiday Cocktail Lounge is located at 75 St Marks Pl, New York, NY 10003, United States. Open daily 4pm – 2am.

Jane’s Carousel, Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York

Destinations From The Silver Screen

One of the most iconic scenes in the film is when Hae Sung and Nora recount their adult lives, strolling amidst the backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge. As they realise the differences between them, the sweet reunion turns sour as they sit on the steps in front of Jane’s Carousel. The historic ride – with 48 intricately carved horses and two chariots built in 1922 – was restored and moved from Idora Park into the glass pavilion at Brooklyn Bridge Park in 2011. Overlooking the East River with picturesque views of the bridges, you’ll want to take a spin on the 100-year-old carousel.

Jane’s Carousel is located at 1 Old Dock St, Brooklyn, NY 11201, United States. Open Mon- Fri 11am – 6.50pm, Sat -Sun 10am – 6.50pm. Tickets run US$3 (S$4) per person.

Queen of Tears

tvN’s top-rated drama, Queen of Tears brings us to iconic locations in South Korea and Germany. Its gripping storyline centres on the marriage between a farmer’s son and a chaebol heiress and their journey back to love. With a stellar cast like Kim Soo-Hyun as Baek Hyun-woo and Kim Ji-won as Hong Hae-in, it’s no wonder these locations have become must-visit spots for a slice of the K-drama romance.

Queens Group – Hyundai, Seoul

Of course, we can’t miss the key locations in South Korea where the drama was filmed. After all, that’s where the main parts of the story unfold. For example, the Queens Group department, where the couple first met and worked in, is Hyundai Seoul. As one of the largest malls in Seoul, you’ll find everything, from luxury brands to delicious food, and there’s even an indoor garden, Sound Forest. The mall is conveniently linked to the Yeouido Station, look for the signs to find your way there.

Hyundai Seoul is located at 108 Yeouidae-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul.

Hong Mansion – Korean Stone Art Museum, Seoul

Image courtesy of Korean Stone Art Museum

You’ll be surprised to know that the lavish Queens’ mansion in the show is the facade of the Korean Stone Art Museum. Located at Seongbuk-dong, the museum is nestled in lush surroundings and is even set against the backdrop of Bugaksan – exactly like the luxurious and private lifestyle you’d expect of a chaebol. Although you won’t find any chaebol there, you’ll learn a lot about the history of stone sculptures in Korea.

Korean Stone Art Museum is located at 66 Daesagwan-ro 13-gil, Seongbuk District, Seoul, South Korea. Open Tue – Fri 10am – 5pm, Sat – Sun 10am – 6pm. Closed Mon.

Watch Sunset at Geonji Village, Chungju, North Chungcheong Province

In episode 12, the couple makes their way to Hyun-woo’s hometown where he confesses his feelings to Hae-in. With the glorious sunset painting the town golden, it’s hard not to be mesmerised by the sight. Nestled in the small town of Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, Geonji Village is surrounded by mountains and rivers, and about two hours by train from Seoul.

Geonji Village is located at 824-1 Jodong-ri, Dongnyang-myeon, Chungju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do.

Asan Dunpo Sinwang Farm, Chungcheongnam-do

The show opens with this dreamy scene, where the heiress flies in by helicopter to find Hyun-woo in his hometown, set in the pear blossom field of Asan Dunpo Sinwang Farm. The ocean of white petals sets the tone for an enchanting atmosphere, making it an unforgettable scene in the show. Do take note that pear blossoms bloom only for a short time from mid-April to early May, so plan your trip accordingly if you’d like to lose yourself among the flowers. Otherwise, purchase some Korean pears, which are said to aid digestion.

Asan Dunpo Sinwang Farm Paddy Fields is located at 130-2 Sinwang-ri, Dunpo-myeon, Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do.

Spree River, Berlin

The magnificent Spree River sets the scene for the couple’s honeymoon phase in the movie. Originating in the Lusatian Highlands and flowing through Saxony, Brandenburg, this waterway plays a central role in Berlin’s cultural and social setting. Hop on a boat ride to catch a glimpse of iconic landmarks such as the Berlin Cathedral and the Reichstag building, or stroll along the green spaces and pose for your Queen of Tears shot in front of this vibrant river.

Hotel de Rome, Berlin

Image courtesy of Hotel de Rome

In their attempt to reignite lost love in episode six, the couple engaged in some heartfelt conversations at the rooftop terrace of Hotel de Rome. Built in 1898, the hotel was originally the headquarters of Dresdner Bank and today, it is transformed into a five-star hotel with the former bank’s jewel vault turned into a spa and indoor pool. With luxurious rooms, exquisite dining experiences, and a rooftop terrace that boasts panoramic views of cultural landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island, this is quite the perfect site for some romance.

Hotel de Rome is located at Behrenstraße 37, 10117 Berlin, Germany.

Remember the childhood rush of opening a pack of trading cards or tearing into a cereal box toy, not knowing which one you’d get? Fast forward to today, and it seems that thrill is back with a vengeance, all wrapped up in the trend of blind item unboxing. From Sonny Angels, to Pop Mart’s Skullpanda and Hirono series, Labubu, Disney-themed collectibles, and even thrift store jewellery mystery bags, this resurgence taps into something deeply nostalgic yet utterly modern.

What Are Blind Item Unboxing and Sonny Angels?

Blind item unboxing involves purchasing items whose contents are unknown until they are opened. These can range from small toys and collectibles to more substantial and expensive items. Sonny Angels, a popular subset, are small, cherubic figurines dressed in various themed costumes, sold in blind boxes that prevent buyers from knowing which figure they will get.

Sonny Angels

Why Are We So Hooked on the Unknown?

There’s a certain magic in the surprise—a dopamine hit when you finally reveal that rare figure or piece of jewellery you’ve been eyeing. It’s not just about the item itself; it’s about the story, the anticipation, the collective excitement of the community. In a way, these blind boxes transport us back to simpler times, reconnecting us with the joy of discovery and the unexpected.

Psychologically, there’s a reason we keep coming back. The unpredictability taps into a basic human desire for novelty and surprise, much like gambling, but with a much more wholesome and socially acceptable face. It’s also about nostalgia, a comforting return to the past where simple pleasures like collecting trinkets brought immense joy.

In a world where everything is so meticulously curated and predictable, blind boxes offer a rare escape—a little mystery in a world that often feels too mapped out.

Community and Shared Experiences

Blind item unboxing has also blossomed into a communal activity. Social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok are flooded with unboxing videos, where enthusiasts share their experiences and reactions. This creates a sense of community and shared excitement. The collective joy of discovering rare or coveted items, along with the communal empathy for less exciting finds, fosters a connection among participants.

Miss Saigon, written by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, has graced stages worldwide since 1989, with this latest production debuting in 2014. While the love tragedy at its core is well-loved, I found myself wondering if it would be worth my time—especially when K-dramas already provide my fix of tear-jerking romances. True enough, the love story between Kim and her American soldier lover, Chris, did little to tug at my heartstrings. Perhaps it was the short build-up of their relationship or the sometimes overly drawn-out vocals and unclear diction in Kim’s singing.

Even so, the steamy staircase interaction between Kim and Chris certainly turned my face red. But it wasn’t just them—the entire stage set and cast set the stage ablaze with passion with the raw and raunchy vibes that fully illustrated bars and cabarets in war-torn Saigon.

More Than a Love Story

It almost felt like the love story wasn’t the focus here. What moved me most was the artful weaving of the Saigon war, the reunification, and the aftermath, together with the hopes and desires of people in a war-torn country. It’s relatable, especially in a time when news of conflict still reaches us in the 21st century.

“Wanting a better life” underpins many of the characters’ motivations. Kim and the other ladies of the night work in the hope of finding an American saviour, while the Engineer—essentially the pimp—schemes to buy his way into the land of dreams, America. And when the American soldiers leave in the huge helicopter replica (kudos to the set production!), the struggles and hopelessness of those left behind, as portrayed by the rest of the cast, stirred my emotions.

Parents may particularly relate to the scenes where Kim does everything for her child, even sacrificing her life. The American soldiers rallying for the Bui Doi—translated as Children of the Dust, referring to children fathered by American soldiers—also evokes a deep sense of longing to provide these children a better life in America.

The Star of the Show

Undoubtedly, the character who truly holds the story together is the Engineer, played by Seann Miley Moore. His dynamic portrayal—from comic relief to plot driver—alongside his captivating performance of “The American Dream,” made him the star of the show.

Moore’s performance magnifies the allure of the American dream, bringing to life the character’s ambitions and desires for a brighter future filled with the luxuries and freedoms of American life. His portrayal was so compelling that I could almost taste the sweetness of his desires.

For sure, Miss Saigon is not just another love tragedy; it weaves together intense reflections on love and sacrifice, hope and desire, and the consequences of war—all under the guise of a love story. So, don’t just read about it—watch it and experience it for yourself.

Miss Saigon runs in Sands Theater until 29 September, tickets start from S$60 onwards.

The F1 Grandstands & Where To Be Seated

When it comes to watching the F1 Singapore Grand Prix, there are several prime spots to choose from, each offering a unique experience. The Bayfront Grandstand is perfect for first-timers, with views of the Marina Bay Sands and exciting track action. The Padang Grandstand offers a lively festival atmosphere near the entertainment stage. This year’s performances include OneRepublic, Kylie Minogue, Lenny Kravitz, Disclosure (DJ), The Corrs, Kool & the Gang, Tones & I, BabyMonster, HONNE, and more. Alternatively, the Pit Grandstand offers the  best vantage views, and lets you get up close to the start/finish line, as well as a peek into the F1 garages, and pit stops. Other options include the Republic Grandstand, the Stamford Grandstand, and the Chicane @ Turn 2 Grandstand (an overtaking hotspot!).

For those seeking a more luxurious experience, the Hospitality Suites provide gourmet dining, drinks, and the premier views in the house. If you’re not at the circuit, don’t worry—many sports bars around Singapore stream the race live, allowing you to enjoy the excitement in a more relaxed setting.

Getting There: Transportation Tips

Getting to the Singapore Grand Prix circuit requires a bit of planning ahead. Public transport is the easiest option with the MRT being the most convenient way to arrive. Stations like City Hall, Esplanade, and Promenade are all within walking distance of key entry points. For those who prefer not to use public transport, Grab or other rideshare services are reliable alternatives. However, be prepared for higher prices, longer waits during peak hours, and the unavoidable traffic jams.

Race Timings & Sessions

20 September 2024 – Practice 1 (5.30pm-6.30pm), Practice 2 (9pm-10pm).
21 September 2024 – Practice 3 (5.30pm-6.30pm), Qualifying (9pm-10pm).
22 September 2024 – Final Race Night (8pm-late).

What to Wear

Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing to stay cool throughout the day, especially in Singapore’s hot and humid climate. Sturdy, comfortable shoes are also a must. September in Singapore is also known for its unpredictable weather, so it’s wise to carry a poncho or a lightweight raincoat just in case of sudden showers. Additionally, if you’re sitting close to the track, consider bringing ear protection—the roar of the engines can be quite intense up close.
