When you think of October, Breast Cancer Awareness may come to mind first—but it’s also time to show your liver some love! That’s right—October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s the perfect reminder that your liver works hard behind the scenes to keep you healthy. Did you know liver cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide? Chronic liver disease affects 1 in 5 people globally, contributing to over 2 million deaths annually. In Singapore, liver cancer is one of the top three causes of cancer deaths among men.

The Good News: Prevention is Possible

Here’s something hopeful: 9 out of 10 cases of liver disease could be prevented with simple lifestyle changes and early detection. So let’s dive into why your liver is so important and what you can do to keep it in tip-top shape.

Understanding Liver Cancer: The Basics

Your liver is like your body’s personal detox squad, filtering toxins and helping your body run smoothly. But certain factors—like chronic viral infections (hepatitis B or C), excessive alcohol consumption, or conditions such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) linked to obesity and diabetes—can disrupt your liver’s function.

A study by Duke-NUS and collaborators from Singapore General Hospital (SGH) found that in Singapore, MASLD affects around 40% of adults, compared to 27% globally.

Liver cancer occurs when liver cells grow uncontrollably, leading to tumors. The most common type is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Conditions like Alcohol-Related Liver Disease (due to excessive drinking) and MASLD (caused by excess fat buildup in the liver) are common risk factors.

Watch for these warning signs:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Nausea and fatigue
  • Abdominal swelling or discomfort

Who’s at Risk?

Let’s face it—anyone can develop liver cancer. But your risk increases if you have chronic hepatitis, drink heavily, or have a family history of liver disease. People who are overweight, have diabetes, or high cholesterol are also at higher risk. If you love your late-night drinks or fast food runs, it’s even more important to stay mindful of your liver health.

Here’s the kicker: liver cancer often shows little to no symptoms in its early stages. That’s why routine screenings are so important. High-risk individuals should undergo regular screenings such as ultrasounds and blood tests every six months to monitor liver health and detect issues early.

Meet Your Livatar: Take the Quiz and Find Out!

How well do you know your liver? Take the “What’s Your Livatar?” quiz–part of a Liver Cancer Awareness campaign developed and supported by Roche–designed to give you insights based on your lifestyle habits. Your results will be linked to a unique Livatar (liver + avatar = Livatar), reflecting your liver health level. Whether your Livatar shows you’re doing great or need to make a few changes, this quiz offers tips to level up your liver care. Take the quiz here.

Liver-Healthy Habits: Easy Ways to Show Your Liver Some Love

Liver Cancer Awareness Month 2024
Incorporate more greens in your daily meals. (Photo credits: Odiseo Castrejon on Unsplash).

Taking care of your liver doesn’t have to be difficult. Start with these simple, liver-loving habits:

  • Eat more greens: Incorporate leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, and healthy fats like omega-3s into your meals. Want an easy detox tip? Start your morning with lemon water to aid digestion and bile production. Herbs like milk thistle and turmeric also support liver detox. Not to mention our favourite detoxifying teas, such as dandelion root or green tea for a gentle cleanse.
  • Move your body: Regular physical activity helps reduce liver fat and improve overall liver function. Even a short walk or yoga session can make a difference. Get inspired by our fitness guides.
  • Alcohol in moderation: When it comes to alcohol, less is definitely more. Alternatively you can always opt for mocktails, as well as zero and low ABV booze to not miss out during a fun outing.
  • Stress management: Give yourself a break — practicing meditation or mindfulness can do wonders for both you and your liver. Read our guide on effective stress management techniques for busy individuals.
  • Getting vaccinated & routine health screenings: Hepatitis B is a big cause of liver cancer, but guess what? There’s a vaccine for that. Stay protected! Regular liver function tests and ultrasounds can also catch early signs of liver issues before they become serious. Being proactive means peace of mind.

Take control of your liver health. Your liver does a ton of work every day, so why not show it a little love? Start by taking the “What’s Your Livatar?” quiz and find out how your liver is really doing. Take the quiz now.

Are your Monday blues creeping into Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and even Friday too? Whether you realise it or not, we spend almost a third of our waking hours at work. Needless to say, where you work and how you work plays a huge role in shaping your mental health. According to a Gallup poll, Singapore ranks among the top three most stressed countries in Southeast Asia when it comes to work. And with mental health and stress being some of the top healthcare concerns among Singaporeans, it’s high time we look at Mental Health at Work –  the theme for World Mental Health Day 2024. We asked, Theodoric Chew, CEO & Co-founder, Intellect – the mental health care company “redefining Mental Healthcare for Global Workforces” – to share insights on workplace mental health in Singapore.

Trends and Challenges

With all the uncertainty, fear, and frustration, the pandemic has certainly pushed mental health into the spotlight. Particularly among younger employees, who prioritise mental health for themselves and their peers.

“82% of Gen Z participants deem mental health days important and half want mental health training.”

Theodoric Chew, CEO & Co-founder of Intellect

Theodoric Chew, CEO & Co-founder of Intellect observes a “ significant shift in the way mental health is perceived in the workplace.” Not only are companies starting to be more aware, but they are increasingly recognizing its impact on productivity and overall organisational health. As they should be, especially when costs associated with absenteeism and presenteeism related to mental health issues are estimated at around S$ 2.3 billion and S$12.8 billion. Intellect’s analysis of data from approximately 50,000 users across ten industries revealed a strong link between personal factors and workplace outcomes. Employees with a strong sense of purpose and in a good state of mental wellbeing are more productive.

“In today’s fast-paced [and] often high-stress work environments, addressing mental health helps prevent burnout, reduce absenteeism, and fosters a more positive and productive work culture.”

-Theodoric Chew, CEO & Co-founder of Intellect

As Theo notes, flexible work arrangements and mental health days becoming more commonplace, and companies are more attuned to the needs of the new generation workforce, with some even starting to offer mental health leaves and in-house therapy sessions, Beyond these reactive policies, companies can look to mental health care companies like Intellect for proactive and sustainable solutions. Combining technology and human support, Intellect offers self-care tools, teleconsultation, and face-to-face counselling or therapy sessions, along with a 24/7 helpline for crises. This integrated approach ensures employees have access to the right support, no matter where they are in their mental health journey.

However, there is still more work to be done, especially when Intellect’s ASEAN Workplace Wellbeing 2024 report found that  “half (45%) of Singaporean employers are hesitant to ‘actively employ’ individuals with mental health conditions.”

Mental Health, Whose Responsibility?

It is a fact that when you are happy, you work better, feel better, and do everything better. And heard of the phrase “happy employees, happy customers?” Because an employee’s mental wellbeing directly affects their work performance, forward-thinking companies not only invest in their employees’ mental health, but they work it into their broader strategies by “offering preventative care, resources, and support systems to help employees manage stress before it escalates into a bigger issue,” Theo shares. In other words, it’s not about making employees happy, nor about the weekly in-office yoga sessions, but about building care and support into the organisation’s fundamental systems – where employees have the tools to support themselves and others.

Leaders are key in shaping workplace mental health. People are known to leave toxic environments and bad managers. Not only do managers foster culture and the work environment, but their actions and policies influence how mental health is understood, supported, and managed within their teams.

“Many companies now recognise that mental health isn’t just a personal issue but a crucial aspect of overall organisational health.”

-Theodoric Chew, CEO & Co-founder of Intellect

Tips for Companies to Foster Mental Wellness at Work

So what can companies do? Here are three tips from Theo:

Promote work-life balance:

“A well-rested team is a productive team!” Companies can adopt flexible working hours (read guidelines here), offer remote work options, and discourage overtime to help employees recharge and maintain a healthy balance between their personal and professional lives.

Provide comprehensive access to mental health resources:

Implement Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) which offer employees access to a range of mental health resources such as mental health professionals, counselling, and digital wellness resources. Additionally, companies must actively promote these resources and ensure confidentiality to overcome stigma. Companies can offer peer support programs and even train managers in mental health first-aid programs, which can help to “improve mental health literacy, empower participants to foster a supportive culture in their workplace, and start important conversations about mental wellbeing.”

Ensure policies reflect the intentions of organisations:

Simply put, walk the talk. Ensure company-wide policies reflect their commitment to improving their workplace wellness. “Companies can look into having flexible work arrangements, options for remote work and/or mental health day offs. This allows employees to manage their time and personal and professional lives more effectively, reducing the likelihood of feeling overwhelmed by work demands. This is also very much aligned with the Tripartite Alliance for Fair & Progressive Employment Practices (TAFEP)’s recent guidelines on flexible work arrangement as well as the upcoming mental health guidelines that are being developed by the Workplace Safety and Health Council.” Otherwise, look to WHO for their comprehensive guideline with actionable steps for mental health at work.

Selene Zhang
Fashion for Cancer Selene Zhang

As a very shy person, this cancer journey has brought me out of my comfort zone, to do things that I don’t usually do, and to really live in the moment.

Selene’s journey with cancer began three years ago after a self-check revealed a lump in her breast to be cancerous. It shattered her world. Seeing how heartbroken her parents and husband (then fiancé) were, distraught her even further. Despite her family’s unwavering support and care throughout her chemotherapy, surgeries, and radiotherapy, the treatment—especially chemotherapy—was still an ordeal.

Besides trapping her in a cycle of despair with fleeting moments of normalcy, Selene was devastated at the thought of losing her hair. “I kinda lost my identity during the period where I lost my hair,” she admits. Missing her long flowy hair, she started to feel uncomfortable in her own skin, even during post-treatment when her hair started growing.  It felt as though no clothes could fit her and her then look. It wasn’t until a fashion lifestyle shoot for cancer survivors that Selene began to reclaim her confidence. She started to feel more comfortable with herself and even came to the realisation that her thoughts were just thoughts. With that shift in mindset, Selene now embraces living in the moment, cherishing everything she has, and always looks at the positive side of things.

To support those in their cancer journey, Selene advises family and friends to “ just be there for the person and offer a listening ear.”

I wish that for all that are battling cancer to never give up, and be confident in what they do because if I can do it, you can do it too. Never give up.

Shamen Yee

Shamen Yee Fashion for Cancer

I felt that if I was going to be sick I might as well be sick in style and not look ugly!

On July 14, 2021, Shaman was diagnosed with Stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. She strongly advocates for early intervention – “the sooner you catch it the higher your chances of survival.” Her mother’s battle with cervical cancer years ago had always loomed in her mind, so when her diagnosis came, she felt a mix of numbness and anger. The only treatment for her then was the entire suite of treatment which included 16 rounds of chemotherapy, 20 sessions of radiotherapy, a lumpectomy, and 18 sessions of immunotherapy. After a long and exhausting year of intense treatment, she was finally declared NED (No Evidence of Disease), but that is not without some complications which will remain with her for life.

Throughout her treatment, fashion became Shamen’s armour. “I made sure that I would go to every treatment session with makeup on, a nice dress, or a nice outfit, sometimes even wearing high wedges to chemo,” she shares. And her nails would always be painted to hide the bruising. All these were more than about looking good; it was a statement of resilience and self-worth. And now, she hopes to inspire the overwhelmed, exasperated, exhausted and lost, through fashion.

To support those in their cancer journey, Shamen advises family and friends to “simply be there.” Stay present, check in regularly and make space to listen when they need a listening year. Show compassion and empathy, but above all, embrace it all and have faith – “IT WILL GET BETTER.”

Life doesn’t end when cancer begins – it is only the beginning of a new chapter, one that can only get better with time.

Jenny Lim

Jenny Lim

Dealing with cancer doesn’t have to be a downward spiral or about constantly putting on a brave front.

A clinical triage quickly turned into a life-altering experience for Jenny when she realised that a lump she felt could be “real trouble.” As she recalled her family’s medical history, the gravity of her situation began to sink in. The consultation with her doctor, filled with medical jargon, zoomed past in a blur, leaving her confused. Jenny’s self-image took a big hit by the physical changes brought on by the treatment— looking worn out, scarring, hair loss, dull skin, and bruised nails. On days when she felt up to it, she started to put extra effort into her appearance, creating outfits that complemented her headscarves and were also used to conceal those changes. “The headscarves made me feel like a bit of a rebel against cancer – like I was making a bold statement that helped me fight back against its effects, even if just a little,” she recalls.

Today, Jenny and her husband can look back in humour, naming her first lump “Little Mac,” – the size of a macadamia nut. Whilst not easy, the journey is one of resilience, teaching Jenny that strength is also in knowing when to pause and practice self-care. She tries to live life more intentionally, spending more time on her passions and with people she loves. Through Fashion for Cancer, Jenny hopes to inspire others by showing that vulnerability is a source of strength. She also hopes to build a community where stories are shared, and where collective experiences are empowering.

To support those in their cancer journey, Jenny advises family and friends to “listen empathetically.” Show support and uplift; be part of their support circle.

Each step of the way is a choice, and for self-care, it’s important to be real and let your emotions have an outlet. But recognise that you are not alone—there’s a great support network out there.

Wilfred Castillo

Wilfred Castilo

Cancer may alter the course of one’s life, but it doesn’t change the core of who you are.

The news of having a rare form of leukaemia came as a severe shock, bringing an immediate flood of questions and self-reflection. “Why me?” and “Was it preventable?” were among Wilfred’s initial thoughts. Once he embraced the situation, Wilfred was “motivated to find a way towards recovery.”  His journey was one of self-reflection, learning to coexist with his condition without letting anxiety take over. Despite the tough road, he found immense gratitude in the unwavering support of his wife, family, and friends. The journey with cancer taught him to treasure what he has and relook at what’s important. Now that he’s received a second life, he intends to live with a greater purpose,

Fashion was crucial in maintaining his sense of self during that challenging period. For Wilfred, what he wore became a powerful statement of his identity and resilience. Because he believes that cancer doesn’t change the core of who you are; it didn’t change the core of him.

To support those in their cancer journey, Wilfred advises family and friends to be there for them so they know that they are not alone.

The diagnosis is not the end…Have hope and hold onto the people worth experiencing life moving forward.

Desmond Tan

Desmond Tan

It is said that cancer is either a speed bump or a forked road. We either treat it as an inconvenience or a radical opportunity to change certain behaviours in our life.

“The future seemedwell, what future?” Desmond recalls when he first received his diagnosis – stage 4 colorectal cancer with metastasis to the liver. The waves of emotions throughout the two years of treatment flung him and his family to the depths of despair and raised them to the heights of elation, with much uncertainty in between. Yet, Desmond and his family rallied through the treatment, which led to his remission. Even then, he is not letting his guard down; he is more conscious of his lifestyle choices, and more importantly, he is treasuring every moment with his loved ones.

“Memento Mori – the reminder of mortality, has never been more real to me in a positive way,” Desmond shares. Cancer is not a death sentence. There are many cancers that are preventable and many more that can be detected early. Fashion, once a mere afterthought in his daily routine, has become his source of empowerment and self-expression. Cancer not only taught him to be true to himself, but it also helped him discover his unique fashion style that is authentically him. Shedding his all-black wardrobe, he now embraces colours and bold designs, just like how he hopes Fashion for Cancer will light up the journeys, dispelling the gloom and doom surrounding the situation. Because “knowing truths about prevention and treatments can save lives and truths can set you free.”

To support those in their cancer journey, Desmond advises family and friends to “Shut up and listen.” He emphasises the importance of being present and offering support without overwhelming them with unsolicited advice.

Cancer thrivers can and should lead the way in embracing and trailblazing how to live a more intentional, humanly-conscious life in a world often preoccupied with superficial pursuits.

Fashion for Cancer Charity Fashion Show runs 31 August 2024. Tickets are priced from S$180 per pax, all proceeds go towards research, treatment, and support for cancer patients. For direct donations, pls refer to Fashion for Cancer 2024’s website for more details.

We’ve all experienced moments where we daydream about spicing up our sex lives with new scenarios. Surprisingly, talking dirty or sexting can be a healthy way to share those fantasies with your partner. Often overlooked, dirty talk engages the most important sexual organ: the mind.

Left: Dr. Martha Tara Lee Right: Yuni Chen

While it might feel intimidating due to social stigmas or personal expectations, we’re here to guide you into the world of dirty talk. Join us as we explore insightful advice from Dr Martha Tara Lee, Relationship Counsellor and Clinical Sexologist at Eros Coaching, along with Women’s Vitality Coach and Somatic Practitioner at Tian on Earth, Yuni Chen.

Introduction To Talking Dirty

Let’s start from the beginning – What exactly is Dirty Talk? Dirty talk is a form of sexual expression that mainly involves using words and sounds to heighten arousal and mutual pleasure between you and your partner.

intimacy between two women
Photo by Alexander Grey on Unsplash

Encompassing a range of verbal cues, from simple affirmations like “yes” or “more” to descriptive phrases detailing actions or constructing fantasies, dirty talk taps into the imagination and can even strengthen emotional bonds. More than excitement and novelty, it also opens new ways of sexual expression and communication. Furthermore, “dirty talk can help individuals break free from inhibitions and societal norms, allowing them to embrace their sexuality fully,” Dr. Martha Lee advises.

Incorporating dirty talk can also boost self-confidence and body positivity. By engaging in verbal expressions of desire and pleasure, individuals can feel empowered and sexually liberated, leading to a more positive self-image.

 Dr. Martha Lee

Dirty talk can be integrated into various contexts, whether during foreplay, intercourse, solo masturbation, or even in long-distance relationships to nurture intimacy – especially in today’s day and age where it has manifested in the form of sexting. Whichever way you choose to talk dirty, Yuni reminds us, “Any form of sexual experiences that you are seeking or are called to explore, either with yourself or with your partner, has to come from this very solid ground of safety and trust.”

Things To Note

Before we delve further into this topic, it’s good to take note of a few important points if you wish to explore incorporating dirty talk into your sex life.

Do It For Yourself

woman hugging herselfSexting, or any intimate relationship, is a two-way street. Pleasing yourself is as important as pleasing others in the process, so do it for yourself, rather than succumbing to other’s desires. Especially if it’s a new experience, take all the time you need to feel comfortable before diving into dirty talking. As Yuni shares, “all forms of sexual explorations are seasonal and really require deeply knowing yourself before saying yes to anything or anyone.” Due to conditioning from society and our environment, many women may tend to put others’ needs before their own. Sit and ask yourself, is this a desire to be liked and accepted, or, is this your body saying yes? Is this coming from a place of fear or love? Understand where this desire comes from and how it feels in your body. If you feel anxious or are not 100% for this experience, it might be good to stop and consider this at a later time in life, advises Yuni.

Before going into an experience, give yourself full permission to take as much time as you need to sit with whether or not sexting is an experience you want to share with your partner or someone you’re dating. – Yuni Chen

Consent Is Key

couple holding hands

As with any sexual activity, consent is crucial, even in sexting or talking dirty. Give your partner as much time as they need, and be patient—do not force or coerce them. While sexting is not illegal between consenting adults, sending sexually explicit messages or images to minors under 16 years old is illegal in the eyes of Singapore’s laws, regardless of consent. Additionally, unwelcome dirty talk, especially in the workplace, can be seen as a form of sexual harassment, covered under the Protection from Harassment Act (POHA) 2014. So, use it consensually and respectfully within a trusting relationship to enjoy this healthy form of sexual expression.

Dirty talk can be thrilling, but it’s essential to set the boundaries – know when to start, and know when to stop. When it comes to getting intimate, remember that everyone has different comfort levels and preferences. Starting and maintaining open communication about what works and what doesn’t for each other is essential to keep things respectful.  Establish a safe word or signal to pause or stop if either partner feels uncomfortable, ensuring both parties feel heard and respected. Most importantly, know that navigating boundaries and consent is an ongoing journey, with mutual respect and understanding, couples can nurture healthy and fulfilling sexual connections.

Let’s Talk About Sex Baby!

In the realm of intimacy, dirty talk is not just about words; it is an art form that transcends language and logic to tap into the primal instincts of desire. It is a poetic expression of passion and lust, where every syllable spoken is a verse in the symphony of connection. Through the language of lust, partners can explore the depths of their fantasies and cravings, using words as tools to unlock hidden desires and unleash raw emotions.

– Dr Martha Lee

Find Your Unique Voice Of Seduction

Start by discussing interests and comfort levels with your partner, as some terms may be a turn-on for some, but a total turn-off for others. From soft moans and sultry whispers to playful banter and naughty suggestions, explore different words, sounds, and styles. Don’t know where to start? Get some inspiration by reading Erotica books. And if you feel a little shy, think about starting behind the screen with sexting. Through the process, make sure to stay present and pay attention to your partner’s responses.

Be Specific & Vivid

Flex your imagination and express your desires and actions in vivid detail. For instance, you might describe your desire to kiss their neck or passionately provide explicit descriptions about what you do or feel. Strong imagery evokes the senses and makes for a stimulating experience. After all, it is a mind game.

Let Loose and Have Fun

Dirty talk doesn’t have to be serious; adding some laughter and playfulness can turn up the heat. Let go of inhibitions and go with the flow; let your words (or giggles) come as they wish. The beauty of dirty talk lies in its spontaneity, so keep an open mind to experiment, and take time to discover the sparks of passion. It’s all about enhancing intimacy, pleasure, and connection. Since every relationship is different, savour the experience without expectations or judgment. Now, go get dirty!

Can we change the world in sixty minutes? Probably not, but dedicating just one hour to our planet can significantly alter the course of our climate emergency. This year, Earth Hour is observed on 23 March 2024, continuing the tradition initiated in 2007. As usual, we are called upon to switch off our lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. This gesture might appear small, but when multiplied by millions of households, it becomes a grand deal for the Earth.

In 2024, while embracing the dark, how about partaking in a digital ‘time out’ instead of reaching for that smart companion? To help you unplug, we’ve rounded up some electricity-free things to do for a digital detox.

Stargazing

Earth hour digital detox

Have you ever wondered why counting stars in Singapore is only achievable through a telescope at the Science Centre Observatory or perhaps, a night spent at secluded spots like Changi Beach Park or Labrador Nature Reserve? The city’s luminous skyline often dims the sparkle of the stars overhead, leaving us with but a few glimpses of their brilliance. With lights out, you’ll be able to cuddle up and gaze into the vastness of the night sky and be able to see some stars in the comfort of your nearest park.

Bending the rules ever so slightly, download apps like Star Walk 2 (for iOS and Android) or Skyview Lite (for iOS and Android), which help identify the celestial bodies you’re admiring. Certain Samsung Galaxy phone models also come with the Astrophoto function that names the stars and planets through your phone. You can even go one step further with AstroHyperlapse, which lets you record the movement of the stars.

Candlelight Dinner

Photo by laura adai on Unsplash

When was the last time you had a candle light? Amp up the romance on Earth Day with the gentle illumination of the candle light. Order in and light the candles to transform your home into an intimate haven, or take it outdoors with a cosy candlelit picnic that lets you connect with nature and each other. Turn this into a multi-sensory experience with scented candles that infuse the air with sweet aromas.

Story Circle

Earth Hour Digital Detox

Gather your nearest and dearest for an intimate story circle when the lights go out during Earth Hour. Suitable for indoors or outdoors, make yourselves comfortable and immerse in the warmth of storytelling through shared narratives, laughter, and reflections. Not only are you contributing to the biggest hour for Earth, but you’ll also deepen your connections, building strong relationships. Need some help to get started? Try Hvala conversation cards or smol tok card decks to get the ball rolling. Or, you can scare yourselves silly with urban legends and ghost stories!

Meditate and Reflect

meditate

It’ll be dark anyway; you might as well close your eyes and sit in deep contemplation. Meditation reduces stress, enhances self-awareness, boosts cognitive functions, enhances mood, and improves sleep. Good for the environment and good for you. From mindfulness meditation and guided meditation to transcendental and loving-kindness meditation, choose from the various techniques and practise the one that resonates best with you. Otherwise, you can just focus on the simplicity of breathing meditation.

Art in the Dark

Art supplies

This might get messy, but who knows, it may also turn out to be your best masterpiece yet! Lay out your art supplies – paint, crayons, colour pencils – and watch your self-judgement fizzle out as the lights dim, allowing you to express yourself on paper freely. Art in therapy has been known to reduce stress and anxiety, and to some, it is also a form of meditation. Paint or draw with both your dominant and non-dominant hands, and see what comes up for you. Try it with both hands simultaneously and activate both sides of your brain at the same time. When the lights come back on, look to your creations for insight into your inner thoughts and feelings.

Sleep

Earth Hour Digital Detox

Honour your natural circadian rhythm by going to sleep when the lights are out. It may not be common knowledge, but Singaporeans are the third most sleep-deprived city in a 2023 study. Apparently, only 17% of us slept through the night, and only one in four sleep more than seven hours a day. Besides bestowing us with those deep-set panda eyes, a lack of sleep affects both our physical and mental well-being. So, take the time this Earth Hour to catch up on lost sleep. You’ll wake up feeling as fresh as a flower.

Frequently in life, we encounter moments where, despite our best efforts, the answers elude us. It’s in these times that many of us look towards divination for guidance. If you’re interested in taking a more active role in this quest for insight, starting with tarot could be an excellent choice. Let’s dive into the basics of embarking on your tarot journey, drawing on wisdom from Elaine Mok, also known as @tarotonthemoon, a seasoned tarot reader.

The Origins Of Tarot

Before embarking on any journey, understanding its origins is crucial. The history of tarot dates back to the 15th century in Europe, particularly northern Italy, where the first decks were created primarily for playing games. Comprising 78 cards divided into four suits – Wands, Pentacles, Swords, and Cups, collectively known as the Minor Arcana, and the 22 cards of the Major Arcana – tarot’s shift from gaming to divination began in the 18th century. This transformation was significantly influenced by the work of French occultist Antoine Court de Gébelin. Today, tarot has evolved into a profound tool for divination, meditation, and self-exploration. With a wide array of decks available, each featuring unique interpretations and themes, there’s a deck out there that will resonate with anyone keen to delve into the mystical and insightful world of tarot reading.

That being said,  there’s much more to the history of tarot. If we’ve managed to piqued your curiosity, there are numerous books and resources available for in-depth research, to help you decide whether tarot is the divination tool that resonates with you.

Myths & Misconceptions

Skepticism frequently arises towards practices that deviate from conventional norms, and tarot is no stranger to such attitudes. In our day-to-day existence, we are groomed to prioritise rationality, which often leads to the dismissal of practices such as tarot as mere ‘witchy woo-woo’.

“I think more people are growing into the realisation that we can be both rational and spiritual, and that we can sit with uncertainty and mystery. Life is, after all, a combination of predictable and random phenomena.”

– Elaine, @tarotonthemoon

Numerous myths and misconceptions about divination and tarot reading persist, potentially skewing your understanding of these practices. Let’s take a moment to address and debunk some of the more prevalent myths we’ve encountered.

Tarot Reading Is Demonic

While some readers do channel otherworldly presences into their readings, they typically do so with the assistance of their spirit guides – perhaps even yours – or deities with the wisdom to offer sound advice for the challenges you’re facing. However, it’s a common misconception that tarot readers are associated with the occult, and that their practice involves conjuring demons or other malevolent entities, or worse, selling their souls for magical powers; which is not 100% true. While some of tarot’s practices is embedded in the occult, its ultimate purpose is to be a tool designed to connect with you, offering guidance and reflections on your journey in life.

Tarot Reading Can Predict The Future

No, tarot cannot tell you if you’ll marry that cute guy you’ve been eyeing or if you’ll be a millionaire by 30 – it doesn’t work that way. However, while it is not entirely true, it can also be disputed that this particular point is also not entirely false. There are some tarot readers who are gifted with clairvoyance – the ability to see or predict future events – however, for the most part, tarot readers are just like us, who are really intuitive and are able to interpret the cards well enough that it would resonate with your situation. Ultimately, your future is not set in stone – think of it more as a friendly nudge into the path you have ahead to determine your own future for the better.

Only Psychics Can Read Tarot Cards

If the above were truly the case, then this article would be redundant. Among all the divination tools out there, tarot is the most intuitive to pick up due to its high visual imagery aspect. The fact is, anyone can learn to read tarot, as interpreting the cards simply requires knowledge, intuition, and experience, all of which can be honed over time. In essence, tarot reading is both a skill and an art; it takes loads of practice, but it can be learnt by anyone.

Getting Started

Now we move to the fun part – actually getting your hands into tarot reading. However, there are, of course, a few items you will need to prepare before you delve into this rabbit hole.

Tarot Cards

What’s a guide to tarot reading if owning a deck of tarot cards isn’t on your checklist? The best way to get started is to acquire a deck and begin shuffling! Elaine recommends starting with a classic deck like the Rider Waite Smith. While numerous tarot decks are available in the market, trust your gut when selecting yours. As Elaine suggests, “Choose whichever deck resonates with you. The deck that compels you to stick around is the best deck for you.” A suggestion before starting is to have your deck thoroughly cleansed – our preferred method is a smoke cleanse using incense!

Where to shop: Spectrum or Etsy

Crystals

While this isn’t a necessity per se, it is good to keep some on hand, as crystals do possess their own properties that could enhance your abilities as a reader. They can improve your intuition, remove mental blocks, allowing for clarity, and provide a more accurate reading. Some we would recommend are Amethyst for clearing negative energies and improving intuition, Tiger’s Eye to keep you grounded and centred during your readings, and Selenite to cleanse your space and your deck!

Where to shop: Glace Crystals or Love for Crystals.

Journal

This can honestly be a unused notebook that’s been sitting in your drawer collecting dust, because you’ve yet to find a use for it – until now! A tarot journal is akin to a witch’s grimoire – it’s the best place to store all your notes, research, and even little keywords that’ll help you interpret your cards better.

“It’s true that there are standard card definitions, but no one goes to a reader for textbook answers they can find online. Your role as a reader is to interpret, and that requires a level of creativity – so just let loose and have fun with it!”

– Elaine, @tarotonthemoon

You

This goes without saying, but you, the reader, hold the most power when giving a reading – everything else is there to simply guide you or create an ambiance conducive to your practice. As much as intuition is important, and if you feel like you may not have had the best intuition growing up, it’s not as elusive as you think.

“The great thing about intuition is that it gets better the more you practice it…Tarot reading also requires logic to structure arguments and social skills if you choose to read for others, for example,”

– Elaine, @tarotonthemoon

Monitoring Your Progress

Truth is, just as with every new skill learned, your growth won’t be as linear as you’d like it to be. You are bound to experience setbacks – like your readings not being consistent, or the inability to be in touch with your intuition as well as you’d hope – and that’s perfectly normal. However, in those moments where you’ve hit that snag, there are some pointers to help you keep going.

Understanding The Ethics Of Tarot Reading

While there are no hard ethics when it comes to tarot reading, it’s more about understanding where your personal ethics lie, especially when doing tarot readings for others. It’s up to you to choose which topics are within or off-limits to you, from politics to medical issues to even religion. It’s all about setting boundaries first before establishing your own intentions as a reader, as well as, determining your vision and demographic before starting to read for others. Eventually, if you do start forming a business around it, you could consider alternative pricing models, such as pay-as-you-wish, or practicing redistribution, like donating a portion of your earnings to causes you support, if these align with your personal ethics.

Here, Elaine imparts her most important advice:

“Crucially, understand your limits as a tarot reader: you can guide others but you are not responsible for their actions and outcomes. Nevertheless, you are accountable for how you choose to frame and present situations, especially difficult ones, during a reading.”

Start Doing Readings For Others

Now, before that bit of social anxiety kicks in, this doesn’t mean you should go public with your readings and offer them to the masses just yet. We suggest doing readings for people who are closer to your circle, such as family and friends – anyone who’s open to having a reading done on them because who would turn down a free reading? At the end of the day, practicing on others is the best way to build your confidence as you slowly start to create a bond with your deck. Eventually, you’ll be able to interpret and cross-reference the cards drawn with the other party’s life experience, providing a more accurate read.

Even if you’re shy, tarot reading opens up a unique container that prioritises small-scale, intimate connection. If you’re not ready to interact with large groups of people yet, focus on the person right in front of you in a reading.” Elaine elaborates.

Finding The Resources

With the internet widely available at our fingertips, there’s no limit to resources when learning just about anything, and tarot is no exception. Tarot readers these days maintain a following on social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, so start from there and see who among them aligns with your outlook and values as a reader.

If you’re an avid reader, Elaine recommends books such as Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack – a true classic. Going further, Radical Tarot by Charlie Claire Burgess and Tarot for the Hard Work by Maria Minnis capture the political and cultural zeitgeist of our time. Eventually, if you’re serious enough, Elaine also recommends Holistic Tarot by Benebell Wen. However, fair warning, as the book is essentially the length of a dictionary, so only commit to reading it if you’re truly dedicated.

Beyond books, you can also check out mobile apps like Labyrinthos Tarot (Available on both Apple and Android) to facilitate learning on the go. Finally, Elaine also maintain her own reading list, Radical Wellness which is available for all to check out!

Tarot Reading

With traces originating back to the 15th century, Tarot started out as playing cards before evolving into tools for occult mysticism by the 1800s. Influential thinkers like Antoine Court de Gébelin linked the symbolic cards to Egyptian and Kabbalistic traditions, while Carl Jung later viewed them as archetypes tapping into the collective unconscious. Today, the 78 varied cards conduits into your innermost hopes and fears – its messages may evolve across generations, but a lingering aura of otherworldly insight persists, continuing to entrance you to unveil tarot’s secrets one spread at a time.

Who to look for: Tarot On The Moon, run by Elaine, a tarot reader and linguist who embraces tarot’s multi-faceted applications: a medium for radical self-reflection, a tool for reframing marginalised narratives, and a canvas for creative storytelling. Her readings dive into a keen sensitivity to the words, signs and symbols used for divination. Her offerings include private sessions, public events, and collaborations such as literary tarot readings, integrating her language expertise.

Reiki

Beyond the usual art of divination, step into the world of Reiki—an extraordinary journey into energy healing. Here, practitioners channel universal energy through palm healing, aiming to kindle wellness and relaxation within you. With a touch that’s light yet profound, they facilitate the flow of positive energy, kickstarting the body’s natural healing processes where stress, anxiety, pain, and imbalances are gently addressed. Some practitioners even take it a step further, offering talismans like heart bracelets or evil-eye pendants, infusing you with protective, loving, or motivating vibes. Embracing the mind and body as an interconnected system, Reiki stands as a holistic and complementary therapy – offering you a gentle and unique path to wellness.

Who to look for: DE’ Obsidian, a Singapore-based company, provides Reiki Healing (S$180 per session) that seamlessly integrate the power of their crystals—also available for purchase. The goal is not just to enhance your life but to also educate you on the proper use of crystals, ensuring you reap their full spectrum of benefits!

Palmistry

A post shared by Linglin Chang (@ling.the.palmist)

For thousands of years, palm readers have peered into the lines etched on our inner palms – believing the hands we’re dealt hide secrets of a destiny foretold. This ancient art of chiromancy – or palmistry – with roots tracing back from Aristotle to the Hindu Vedas, unveils character traits and foretells fate based on the contours of the palm. What truths are nestled within looped lifelines and jagged heart barriers? Can intellect and passions be traced in delicate map lines as well? Fingers, too, can unlock unspoken talents, providing a glimpse into the veiled tides of fortune that guide life’s uncertain seas.

Who to look for: Linglin Chan operates a full-time spirituality business, primarily specialising in palm reading. Additionally, she offers face reading and tarot reading services, incorporating philosophy and psychology into her practice. Her Palm Reading sessions are priced from S$168.

Numerology

If you find that repeating number sequences seem to pop up at poignant times in your life, numerology may be calling your name. This ancient practice examines the hidden codes within words, names, dates, and ideas to reveal the energetic vibrations at play. Drawing links between numbers and life events, numerologists believe certain digits carry luck, influence personality, and even foreshadow the future. Though frequently entwined with astrology’s lens, numerology provides an additional layer of spiritual guidance to those seeking it. Each reading sheds light on life’s intricate patterns, affirming inner truths for some or providing comfort during uncertainty for others.

Who to look for: Alex of Hidden Perspective is a seasoned practitioner of Chinese metaphysics and a certified Enneagram Master, helping many achieve their deepest potential. The initial consult is free of charge, however the fees for subsequent consults vary. For more information or bookings, visit their website.

Clairvoyance

Originating from the Old French language, meaning “clear sight,” clairvoyants often come to mind when thinking about fortune tellers who predict the future. These psychics have the ability to tap into unseen vibes and energies, allowing them to receive visions of past events or glimpses into the future. Unlike tarot or astrology, clairvoyants rely on their intuitive third eye to see beyond the physical world, unveiling hidden truths not just about individual events but offering insights into the broader life path of individuals. Advanced practitioners can even enter an almost trance-like state, enhancing their ability to control and interpret what they see regarding fate, origins, relationships, and spiritual growth providing comfort to those in search of deeper understanding.

Who to look for: Psychic coach and intuitive Lynda Woolf has worked on FBI and police cases and became famous around the world for her accuracy and psychic ability. Congenial, open, and friendly, she conducts both online and offline services from S$125 for 30 minutes.

Fengshui

In the vast cosmic landscape, the Chinese uphold three key cosmic forces: Destiny, Earth Luck, and Human Luck. Fengshui, deeply rooted in ancient Chinese wisdom, steps into the realm of Earth Luck. While it doesn’t rewrite destiny’s script, it acts as a cosmic choreographer, orchestrating a dance of harmony between individuals and their surroundings. Picture it as optimising the flow of Qi, the vital life force coursing through everything. By fine-tuning this energy dance, fengshui aims to elevate your quality of life, fostering health, prosperity, and an overall sense of well-being.

Who to look for: Want to improve the flow of luck in your life? David Tong from Chinese Metaphysics Global Consulting is a pro at classic fengshui techniques, which include furniture placement and bazi readings – no hard selling of crystal balls or talismans here.

Aura Reading

The idea of the aura – an energy field surrounding living things – traces back through many ancient religions and cultures – perceiving these invisible halos of light to uncover insights about our inner world. In modern times, aura readers carry on this psychic tradition of interpreting auras to reveal truths about us with the aid of biosensor tools that can photograph this metaphysical layer based on colour meanings – like red signalling passion or green for healing – making it easier to identify areas within us that needs spiritual balance.

Who to look for: Known as one of Singapore’s most renowned occult shops, The Love Witch offers Aura Readings (S$48++), utilising biofeedback devices to visually render precise human-energy readings providing metaphysical insights to enhance healing and self-awareness.

Perhaps propelled by the success of Netflix shows like ‘Sex Education’,  and sex-positive content creators like @shyandcurious_com, @dr_cuterus, and @sallystoy.vera on Instagram, we are opening up to the concept of women’s sexual wellness. However, when discussing sex, “it’s still often taboo, especially for women’s views on sex to be heard,” according to Sex Therapist and Founder of Nambani, Dian Handayani.

In Asia, sexuality has always been framed as a means of procreation, and its purity culture, regardless of religion, is accepted as necessary to uphold family honour. Sadly, in other circumstances, sexuality may even be exerted as a form of power.

“Having these discussions is an act of rebellion against thousands of years of shushing our sexuality, and this is how we break down the walls of silence and shame and reclaim our power from the systematic oppression and violation of our sexuality.”

Despite the stigmas and taboos, women who have walked the path are showing up as doctors, coaches, and therapists to empower other women to their sexual wellness. We speak with three women who take on the task of education and support to rewrite the narratives for women’s sexual wellness.

Common Stigma and Taboos

Misconceptions and Misbeliefs

When asked about the common stigmas and taboos, Dr Jessherin Sidhu, Medical Director of Insync Medical, spoke of misconceptions that point to the lack of understanding of women’s sexuality. For example, women are thought to have lower sex drive than men, so “If a woman displays a sex drive that is higher than her male partner, then she is seen as the one with sexual dysfunction. This is a very inaccurate representation of how we view and understand sex drive between and within the genders.”

She added that “women feel they need to have a spontaneous sexual desire to be deemed as someone with an intact sex drive,” when actually women build up arousal from a place of sexual neutrality. Even women themselves carry inaccurate beliefs like “Sexual activity is meant to go on a decline after menopause” and “many women still find vibrating devices inappropriate to use together with a male partner as they feel it may emasculate their partners.” She encourages anyone with sexual dysfunction – difficulty with arousal or desire or a lack of orgasm or sexual pain – to reach out, as these concerns should not be left unaddressed because of embarrassment.

Shame

Indeed, shame and embarrassment are what Yuni has seen in her practice. “One of the most prevalent taboos is the shame surrounding self-pleasure – which I have personally experienced and spent many years dismantling. Self-pleasure is an essential form of body literacy and intimacy with yourself.” She encourages women to learn about their infradian rhythm and literally take pleasure into their own hands. With the “transformative power of self-pleasure—women become more in tune with their desires, more confident in their relationships, and more attuned to their own needs and boundaries.”

Culture and Lack of Education

Dian observes, “Women’s pleasure is the taboo that impacts most often.” She sees “women endure pain and discomfort because they feel pressure for their partner or husband to be satisfied.” And there are those on the other spectrum who focus too much on orgasm that sex becomes a chore, sacrificing pleasure. It doesn’t help that cultural taboos and the lack of sex education stop women from talking about sex for fear of being labelled indecent or rude. She encourages reading from reliable sources or attending pleasure empowerment workshops, though “nothing beats the power of having a safe and accepting community where we can continue to learn and grow in a supportive environment.” Besides addressing sexual crises, qualified sex therapists and coaches can offer personalised sex education, guidance and resources in one or two therapy sessions.

Empowering Women to Sexual Wellness

Embrace All Aspects of Sex

Dr Jess
Dr. Jessherin Sidhu, Medical Director of Insync Medical,

Dr Jess was compelled to practise Sexual Medicine when she realised that the sexual health services are oversimplified, disregarding “many aspects of sexual health such as dysfunctions, sexual arousal, sexual desire, orgasm and sexual pain in both cis and transgender people.” As Medical Director, she works with clients to “embrace their perspectives of sex in a positive, inclusive, and mindful manner.” She advocates sex positivity, self-pleasure and normalising conversations and has recently co-led a discussion, in partnership with LELOthe luxury pleasure brand, speaking on ‘Pleasure Mapping through Self-Exploration‘. In the discussion, she shared how understanding sexual preferences can enhance intimacy and how to incorporate sex toys like their latest ENIGMA Wave™. Powered by advanced technology, the triple-action sonic massager delivers a powerful sonic wave stimulation on the clitoris, together with an insertable tail that vibrates and moves on a patented WaveMotion™ technology. In fact, with LELO’s versatile product range, Dr. Jess utilises them in various stages of her practice based on her patients’ needs.

Reconnect and Nurture the Self

Yuni, Women’s Vitality Coach and Somatic Practitioner, Tian on Earth

As a Women’s Vitality Coach and Somatic Practitioner, Yuni supports women in breaking free from fear and shame while nourishing their self-relationship. She serves the innate intelligence of the body and coaches women one-on-one to help them holistically recalibrate and reconnect with their bodies. From January 2024 onwards, she will offer a group-based online experiential workshop called Sunday Service that will run the first Sunday of every month. It is a guided hands-on vulva and vagina mapping session for women, moving through the anatomy of the vulva, vagina, and pelvic bowl. To her, “the antidote is coming home to yourself, placing your fingers into the depths of your pelvis and feeling.” She advocates going slow, moving through the complete arousal cycle, which can take 25-45 minutes. “Retire your vibrators for good, or at least take a sabbatical from them.” They mirror our society’s need for efficiency, while women need nurturing self-touch to feel and develop self-intimacy fully. But if you are not ready to use your hands, she recommends starting with a glass dildo. Use code “TIANONEARTH” for 10% off.

Safe Space in Therapy

Dian Handayani, Sex Therapist and Founder of Nambani,

Dian works to provide a safe and non-judgmental space. She helps them unpack their most intimate thoughts and feelings, taking them from shame to empowerment. Although she worked in mental health for more than ten years, it was a calling  that led her to start her a sex therapy practice, Nambani, which means healing in Javanese. Today, she openly challenges women’s sexuality myths in panel discussions like a recent one with PrimeTime Singapore. In therapy sessions, Dian uses expressive techniques such as art therapy or somatic experiencing to support clients around shame and taboos. Outside therapy, depending on her client’s needs, she may suggest getting playful with sex toys from Genvie or attending workshops by Hedonist to learn about female orgasms, kink and more. As a clinical supervisor and an educator, Dian also imparts her knowledge to students and supervisee. “This creates a ripple effect where they can transfer knowledge to their clients and the communities they serve.” In turn, this creates an accepting and supportive community where everyone can learn and grow.
