When you think of October, Breast Cancer Awareness may come to mind first—but it’s also time to show your liver some love! That’s right—October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s the perfect reminder that your liver works hard behind the scenes to keep you healthy. Did you know liver cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide? Chronic liver disease affects 1 in 5 people globally, contributing to over 2 million deaths annually. In Singapore, liver cancer is one of the top three causes of cancer deaths among men.

The Good News: Prevention is Possible

Here’s something hopeful: 9 out of 10 cases of liver disease could be prevented with simple lifestyle changes and early detection. So let’s dive into why your liver is so important and what you can do to keep it in tip-top shape.

Understanding Liver Cancer: The Basics

Your liver is like your body’s personal detox squad, filtering toxins and helping your body run smoothly. But certain factors—like chronic viral infections (hepatitis B or C), excessive alcohol consumption, or conditions such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) linked to obesity and diabetes—can disrupt your liver’s function.

A study by Duke-NUS and collaborators from Singapore General Hospital (SGH) found that in Singapore, MASLD affects around 40% of adults, compared to 27% globally.

Liver cancer occurs when liver cells grow uncontrollably, leading to tumors. The most common type is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Conditions like Alcohol-Related Liver Disease (due to excessive drinking) and MASLD (caused by excess fat buildup in the liver) are common risk factors.

Watch for these warning signs:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Nausea and fatigue
  • Abdominal swelling or discomfort

Who’s at Risk?

Let’s face it—anyone can develop liver cancer. But your risk increases if you have chronic hepatitis, drink heavily, or have a family history of liver disease. People who are overweight, have diabetes, or high cholesterol are also at higher risk. If you love your late-night drinks or fast food runs, it’s even more important to stay mindful of your liver health.

Here’s the kicker: liver cancer often shows little to no symptoms in its early stages. That’s why routine screenings are so important. High-risk individuals should undergo regular screenings such as ultrasounds and blood tests every six months to monitor liver health and detect issues early.

Meet Your Livatar: Take the Quiz and Find Out!

How well do you know your liver? Take the “What’s Your Livatar?” quiz–part of a Liver Cancer Awareness campaign developed and supported by Roche–designed to give you insights based on your lifestyle habits. Your results will be linked to a unique Livatar (liver + avatar = Livatar), reflecting your liver health level. Whether your Livatar shows you’re doing great or need to make a few changes, this quiz offers tips to level up your liver care. Take the quiz here.

Liver-Healthy Habits: Easy Ways to Show Your Liver Some Love

Liver Cancer Awareness Month 2024
Incorporate more greens in your daily meals. (Photo credits: Odiseo Castrejon on Unsplash).

Taking care of your liver doesn’t have to be difficult. Start with these simple, liver-loving habits:

  • Eat more greens: Incorporate leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, and healthy fats like omega-3s into your meals. Want an easy detox tip? Start your morning with lemon water to aid digestion and bile production. Herbs like milk thistle and turmeric also support liver detox. Not to mention our favourite detoxifying teas, such as dandelion root or green tea for a gentle cleanse.
  • Move your body: Regular physical activity helps reduce liver fat and improve overall liver function. Even a short walk or yoga session can make a difference. Get inspired by our fitness guides.
  • Alcohol in moderation: When it comes to alcohol, less is definitely more. Alternatively you can always opt for mocktails, as well as zero and low ABV booze to not miss out during a fun outing.
  • Stress management: Give yourself a break — practicing meditation or mindfulness can do wonders for both you and your liver. Read our guide on effective stress management techniques for busy individuals.
  • Getting vaccinated & routine health screenings: Hepatitis B is a big cause of liver cancer, but guess what? There’s a vaccine for that. Stay protected! Regular liver function tests and ultrasounds can also catch early signs of liver issues before they become serious. Being proactive means peace of mind.

Take control of your liver health. Your liver does a ton of work every day, so why not show it a little love? Start by taking the “What’s Your Livatar?” quiz and find out how your liver is really doing. Take the quiz now.

Navigating the world of strength training and lifting as a beginner can be overwhelming with complex terms and information overload. Fret not – our beginner’s guide to weightlifting – featuring insights from Dominic Nadaison, Team Trainer at SURGE: Strength & Results – breaks down the fundamentals, helping you embark on your journey one rep at a time.

Benefits Of Strength Training

Let’s rewind a bit before diving into the nitty-gritty – why is strength training essential in this day and age? Despite its growing popularity, skepticism persists about its impact on appearance, with the fear of looking ‘bulky’ being a common misconception, especially among women. Dominic debunks this myth, clarifying that while strength training can promote muscle hypertrophy and size increase, it doesn’t necessarily result in a bulky appearance.

If anything, as shared by Dominic, “Resistance training is essential for overall physical and mental health.” The physical benefits range from increased bone density and a reduced risk of osteoporosis to improved quality of life and prevention of chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, as it increases your metabolism and converts your fats into muscle mass. Additionally, mental well-being plays a crucial role, helping keep chronic mental illnesses like depression or anxiety at bay and transforming negative coping mechanisms into a healthy outlet through exercise.

Understanding The Fundamentals

Now that we’ve covered the ‘why,’ let’s delve into the ‘how.’ Lifting and strength training go beyond the question of ‘how much can you bench?’ It involves a series of exercises using types of weights and compound movements to target specific muscle groups, ensuring steady progress in increasing your strength. This is where you’d also have to start monitoring your form and technique.

“Proper form and technique are imperative when it comes to any form of resistance training. Improper form could limit how effective an exercise is, as you may not be targeting the intended muscle. This could also lead to muscle imbalances and increase the risk of injury, which could lead to long-term problems with your joints, tendons, and ligaments,” emphasises Dominic.

Common choices of weights can include the following.

Body Weight

As the self-explanatory name suggests, bodyweight exercises utilise your entire body’s weight, requiring little to no equipment in your training. Examples of exercises that primarily use body weight include pushups, planks, and squats.

Free Weights

Commonly known as dumbbells, kettlebells, or barbells, free weights are considered the quintessential tools for strength training. They can also serve as an extension for exercises typically done with body weight, such as squats or lunges. Undoubtedly, the most common uses for dumbbells are bicep curls and lateral raises.

Weight Machines

While weight machines may sometimes look intimidating, they are actually the best place to start with strength exercises. They assist with stability, allowing you to monitor and adjust your form and technique. The most common ones you’d see in the gym are for lateral pulldowns, leg press, and cable rows.

What To Invest In

Needless to say, when starting out on a new journey, there are always things you have to invest in to ensure you start out on the right foot. As Dominic would suggest, getting a personal trainer to start out does help tremendously. “It takes a lot of the guesswork out of the equation, especially for someone who is new to strength training,” he elaborates.

Apart from that, there are still some essentials you could consider investing as you progress in your fitness journey.

Deadlift Straps

While this is not essential for a complete beginner, it is still good to know about, especially as you start progressing to lifting heavier weights. Deadlift straps create a barrier between your skin and the weight, while also relieving tension from your hands. The reduced tension and extra layer of protection can help prevent most powerlifting hand injuries from occurring.

Try: Iron Bull Strength’s Basic Lifting Straps (S$22)

Flat-Soled Shoes

For the longest time, people have been investing in shoes with a good amount of cushioning for the gym, as it usually helps absorb the impact during exercises like cardio. However, when it comes to strength and lifting, it’s a whole new ballgame, and those types of shoes proves redundant. Here, flat-soled shoes are all the rage as they put your foot in a flat position, promoting balance, stability, and natural movement mechanics. While there are shoes out there dedicated to lifting and strength training, the easier choice, especially for beginners, is to use everyday sneakers like Converse or Vans as those already provide a flat base for you to work on. Alternatively, if you prefer a free option, going barefoot is also quite common, but just watch your toes!

Try: 1Hund’s Trainer Pro (S$90) or Vans’ SK8 Low (S$99)

Attire

Remember the saying, ‘look good, feel good’? Well, when it comes to hitting the gym, it’s no different. Standard gym clothes include outfits that are both comfortable and practical, but who says we can’t have fun with it? In today’s day and age, many fitness wear brands on the market pride themselves on fit and function, creating innovative and impactful products to help you perform better. Additionally, the experimentation with a wide variety of colours ensures you feel extra confident as you nail that PR– Personal Record.

Try: Oner Active or Alphalete. For more ideas read our full article on the best activewear wear brands in Singapore

Maintaining Your Gains

To wrap it up, it’s equally important to learn how to maintain those gains – otherwise, all that hard work would be for naught. Beyond exercise, your diet, rest, and even mental strength play a crucial part in your long-term progress.

Improving Your Diet

It’s safe to say the standard balanced diet includes a fair combination of greens, proteins, and carbs. However, increasing your protein intake has proven valuable in aiding better performance and building muscle. Additionally, when it comes to maintaining your diet, as advised by Dominic, “Learn how to track your daily caloric intake and expenditure; this directly impacts weight management.”

Moreover, taking dietary supplements such as creatine could help improve your progress. While creatine is a natural molecule that your body produces, it only produces a minimal amount – getting an extra boost through supplements can help increase muscle content and boost overall strength, allowing you to lift heavier over time. However, a word of advice: drink plenty of water if you start taking creatine, something you should already be doing by default!

Keeping Yourself Consistent

Last and most importantly, understand that getting strong is a long-term journey that requires commitment and consistency if you want to go the distance. Real transformations don’t happen overnight – they take days, months and even years of regular workouts and continually pushing yourself. But with an open and patient mindset, embracing both successes and temporary setbacks, you have the power to attain your fitness goals however long they take – just remember to trust the process!

To cap it off, Dominic shares his final advice:

Do not rush into anything you’re unsure of. Master the forms and techniques before progressing onto something new or heavier. Lastly, set yourself up for success by keeping the end goal in mind but set yourself smaller goals in between.”

As much as we love our big and bustling city, we can’t deny that it’s nice to get away and spend some time in nature sometimes. Beyond Singapore’s urban jungle lie pockets of lush greenery where you can escape and unwind. In need of a boost for your mind and body plus a healthy dose of vitamin D? Lace up your boots, as we take you through these scenic hiking spots in Singapore that make for easy treks, gentle on the knees and suitable for all fitness levels.

Walk in the Parks

Rifle Range Nature Park

The 66-hectare park is the latest addition to the Central Park Network, which boasts over 7km of trails and boardwalks. Easily accessible via the overhead bridge from Beauty World Center, the park offers panoramic views from its cliff-top observatory deck and close-up views of wetland animals at the former Sin Seng Quarry. Find yourself beneath the Banyan Tree or have fun with the interactive elements at the play area, but make sure to keep your eyes peeled for animals using the hanging rope bridges and colugo poles to navigate the forestry.

Rifle Range Nature Park is located at Rifle Range Road.

Windsor Park

Nestled right next to MacRitchie, Windsor Nature Park sprawls across 75 hectares, with a marsh habitat and freshwater streams running through it. With several trails in place, take your easy walks on the wheelchair-friendly Hanguana Trail, where you will find rare native plants. The Drongo Trail is a 150m long, elevated boardwalk that lets you view under the canopy of the secondary forest and watch wildlife in their habitat. Fun fact: nearly half of Singapore’s 122 species of dragonflies are found here!

Windsor Park is located at 30 Venus Drive, Singapore 573858.

Dairy Farm Nature Park

The 75-hectare rustic Dairy Farm Nature Park offers diverse trails and a host of activities and amenities for nature enthusiasts. Walk the nature trails and discover biodiversities native to the park, then stop by the picturesque Singapore Quarry to catch sight of turtles and fishes. The Wallace Education Centre sees interactive exhibits to learn about the history and biodiversities of the area. If you are in the mood for an adventure, blaze the Dairy Farm Loop Trail to get to the top of Bukit Timah Hill.

Dairy Farm Nature Park is located at 100 Dairy Farm Rd, Singapore 679057.

Hike through Park and Reserves

MacRitchie Reservoir Park

When thinking about hiking, this is one place that will come to mind. The oldest and largest reservoir in Singapore boasts lush foliage around the clear waters of the central catchment area. Hike along the boardwalk along the water’s edge or make your way to the Treetop walk, a 250-metre suspension bridge that takes you above the canopies of the tropical rainforest. With trails of varying difficulty levels, the park is also popular for cross-country runs.

MacRitchie Reservoir Park is located at 36 Lornie Rd, Singapore 298735.

The Southern Ridges

One hike, many experiences; take your hike to the Southern Ridges that connect Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, HortPark, Kent Ridge Park and Labrador Nature Reserve. The 10km trail will take you to panoramic city views, the iconic Henderson Waves bridge and easy treetop walks where you can fully immerse in lush greenery. These spots are so scenic you’ll want to stop and snap a few shots for the gram.

The Southern Ridges starts near Harbourfront MRT Station.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

You might not know, but our garden city is an essential site for migratory birds escaping cold climates. Every year, thousands of birds from over 40 species migrate to the warm marshes of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. More than birds, the ecological jewel is also home to resident birds like herons and sunbirds and other inhabitants like mudskippers, crabs, water snakes and more. Trek the elevated Sungei Buloh Boardwalk, a two-km walkway with great views of the marshes.

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve starts at 301 Neo Tiew Crescent, Singapore 718925.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

We’ve all been to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, one of Singapore’s best-known natural offerings, to brave the hill at some point – but how many of us have truly explored every inch of this spectacular paradise? The reserve is one of the few areas of primary rainforest and contains most of our country’s native flora and fauna. Fun fact: the reserve has more tree species than the entirety of North America! Seasoned bikers will also enjoy the 7km mountain biking trail, an intermediate to advanced venture that takes you through intense ups and downs — literally.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is located at Hindhede Drive, Singapore 589318.

Labrador Nature Reserve

Labrador Nature Reserve — or as you know it, Labrador Park — is home to the only publically accessible rocky sea-cliff on the mainland. While the entire reserve is a three-hour commitment, feel free to limit your visit to smaller areas like the 960m Berlayer Creek or 330m Bukit Chermin Boardwalk. Apart from the rocky shores and the sea, other sights to expect during your hike include birds and flowers in the Alexandra Garden Trail. The park is also closely connected to the Southern Ridges, a 9km chain of green, open spaces across southern Singapore.

Labrador Nature Reserve is located along Labrador Villa Road.

Island Hikes

Sentosa Imbiah Trails

Beyond sun, sand, and sea, Sentosa offers an immersive 2.3km walk through the protected nature area on Mount Imbiah. Trek through the 80m-high forested hill and discover flora and fauna unique to this part of Singapore. Along the trail, you may come across one of the 80 species of resident and migratory birds, or you can have some photo fun with their larger-than-life models. Cool off at the man-made Tempinis Cascade waterfall, or take a seat at one of the shelters.

Sentosa Imbiah Trails starts near Imbiah Lookout on Sentosa island, accessible via Imbiah Station.

Coney Island

Coney Island

Also known as Pulau Serangoon, this little offshore island was touted as “Singapore’s First Island Health Resort” in the 1950s. Today, the 100-ha park is an ecologically sustainable park with many environmental initiatives like using rainwater in the toilets and solar power for water pumps. Hike the family-friendly park through the forests or walk along the boardwalks to explore the mangrove. Trek deeper into the forest, and you might spot the abandoned Haw Par Beach Villa.

Coney Island is located beside the Punggol Promenade Nature Walk.
