In an era where environmental consciousness is becoming increasingly paramount, every sector is reevaluating its practices to be more eco-friendly, and the floral industry is no exception. Sustainable flower delivery is not just a trend; it’s a conscious choice for consumers who wish to support environmentally responsible practices while still indulging in the beauty that flowers bring to our lives. In this article, we delve into how the floral market is evolving, the practices that make flower delivery in Thailand sustainable, and why making sustainable choices matters.

What Does Sustainability Mean in the Floral Industry?

Sustainability, in the context of the floral industry, encompasses practices that ensure the cultivation, production, and transportation of flowers have minimal negative impacts on the environment. This includes:

  • Responsible Sourcing. Sourcing flowers from farms that prioritize eco-friendly practices, such as organic farming, reduced pesticide usage, and biodiversity.
  • Local Sourcing. Choosing local growers reduces transportation emissions, supports the local economy, and ensures that flowers are fresher when they reach consumers.
  • Sustainable Packaging. Using biodegradable, recyclable, or compostable materials for packaging instead of plastic, which often ends up in landfills.
  • Water Conservation. Using methods that minimize water consumption and maximize efficiency in irrigation practices.
  • Energy-Efficient Transportation. Utilizing carbon-neutral delivery methods, such as electric vehicles or bicycles, to transport blooms from the farm to the consumer.
  • Ethical Labor Practices. Ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions for farm workers.

The Benefits of Sustainable Flower Delivery

Choosing sustainable flower delivery does not merely contribute to ecological preservation; it has far-reaching benefits that enhance the consumer’s experience while fostering positive changes within the industry.

Environmental Impact
By opting for sustainably sourced flowers, consumers help reduce the carbon footprint associated with the production and transportation of flowers. Supporting local growers is a noteworthy move toward reducing emissions.

Quality Assurance
Sustainable flowers are often grown with greater care. Many sustainable farms focus on quality rather than quantity, leading to blooms that are more vibrant, fragrant, and longer-lasting.

Biodiversity Promotion
Sustainable practices encourage the cultivation of a variety of species. This not only beautifies the landscape but also supports pollinators and other wildlife.

Community Support
By choosing to buy locally, consumers contribute to the livelihood of local farmers, creating a more resilient community overall.

Connection to Nature
Sustainable flowers help heighten awareness of the impact human activities have on the planet, and they allow consumers to feel a deeper connection to nature.

How to Choose a Sustainable Flower Delivery Service

Researching Local Flower Farms

The first step in ensuring you receive sustainable blooms is to seek out local flower farms that embrace eco-friendly practices. Often, these farms are more than happy to share their farming methods and certifications. Look for labels such as:

  • Certified Organic. Indicates flowers grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
  • Fair Trade Certified. Ensures that farmers are paid fair wages and work in safe conditions.
  • Rainforest Alliance. Certifies farms that meet standards for sustainability, focusing on biodiversity conservation and improved livelihoods.

Ask Questions

When dealing with online flower delivery services, don’t shy away from asking probing questions about sourcing and practices. Ask about:

  • The origin of the flowers?
  • Whether they employ environmentally friendly farming techniques?
  • Their approach to packaging and transportation?
  • Any certifications they hold related to sustainability?

In today’s world, where climate change and environmental degradation receive increasing attention, sustainable flower delivery emerges not just as a service but as an ethical choice that reflects our values as conscientious consumers. It’s a beautiful way to express care for loved ones while simultaneously caring for the planet.

By selecting growers and delivery services that adhere to sustainable practices, consumers contribute to a positive shift within the floral industry. Whether through supporting local farms, engaging with companies that prioritize eco-friendly methods, or simply choosing seasonal blooms, the actions we take today can help ensure that the beauty of our planet—and the flowers that grace our lives—remains vibrant for generations to come.

The pandemic gave Brian Ho, founder of Decibelist, the best opportunity to turn his interest in music and art into a business, collaborating with local artists to challenge traditional perceptions about speakers. Turning up plain old speakers, Brian creates “art speakers” that will brighten the room. Looking more like statement pieces or a piece of art, these speakers are made to order and are 3D printed with biodegradable materials using minimal-wastage additives. Some are crafted with off-cut fabrics and recycled chopsticks, some are “alive” with moss! While the big city offers convenience, there’s no shame in admitting the need for some time away to find inner peace. That’s where island life comes in – and why venture far when we have eight islands off the Southern Coast of Singapore? Enter Lazarus Island, the new eco-tourism destination with a blend of engaging activities and serene settings for a brief weekend escape. So, let your hair down and indulge in the island dream as we dive into your ultimate guide to Lazarus Island!

Morning

Just 30 minutes by ferry from Marina South Pier or 15 minutes from Sentosa Jetty @ Cove, you’ll arrive at Lazarus Seringat Jetty. From there, take a brief stroll to Eagle’s Bay, where most of your activities and accommodations are situated.

Stock up on the necessities at convenience store, Sol by BDC. Built from a repurposed shipping container, this convenience store houses a curated selection of daily essentials such as snacks, drinks, cup noodles, toiletries, sunscreen, and even medicated oils for those pesky mosquito bites. Additionally, you can find ready-to-eat microwaveable meals and ready-to-grill food items and platters curated by Chef-owner Samuel Quan, ensuring you’ll be spoiled for choice as you load up for the day ahead!

Afternoon

Sun’s out, buns out! The afternoon is prime time for getting active and exploring all the island has to offer.

For aquatic adventures, head to the picturesque beachfront, where you can partake in a variety of water activities at the Lazarus Sea Sports Centre. From Stand-up Paddle-boarding (S$20++) to Floating Yoga (S$20++), and Water Biking (S$30++), these are just some of the activities you can enjoy under the guidance of experienced instructors. Otherwise, take a dip in the beckoning crystal-clear waters.

On the sand, enjoy classic beach activities like volleyball, sunbathing, or picnicking with loved ones. Meanwhile, your little ones can have their own beach fun, building sandcastles and playing to their hearts’ content! Whatever you choose, remember to slap on your sunscreen!

If scenic journeys are more your style, take a leisurely stroll over to St. John’s Island, just 20 minutes away via a connector bridge, and rent a bike (S$25 for two hours) from Gogreen @ St John’s Island for some land-side fun! If cycling isn’t your forte, don’t worry – they also offer scooters (S$25 for two hours) for rent. However, be sure to plan your visit for a weekend, as they are closed from Tuesdays to Thursdays.

Lastly, don’t forget to witness Lazarus Island’s spectacular sunsets before calling it a day.

Evening/Night

In the past, Lazarus Island was primarily a daytime destination due to the lack of proper accommodation. While old-school camping was an option, not everyone enjoys roughing it. Luckily, Lazarus Island now offers two, pet-friendly accommodations, ideal for overnight stays without compromising on your comfort.

Experience an oasis away from the city’s hustle and bustle with Tiny Away Escape @ Lazarus Island (S$284++ per night). Developed by eco-tourism startup Big Tiny, these low-carbon, sustainable accommodations offer five charming tiny houses, each with its own unique theme – from colonial-era to groovy retro and modern Scandinavian aesthetics. Complete with air conditioning, a kitchenette, television, and an en-suite bathroom, these cozy retreats ensure a comfortable stay amidst nature’s tranquility.

For those seeking a camping experience without the actual grit, check out Into The Woods (S$380++ per night). This glamping site features nine units, offering overnight beachfront glamping at Lazarus Island. While the units do not come with an en-suite bathroom, a private outhouse is available for staying guests. With an emphasis on bringing you closer to nature, specially curated welcome kits are provided, containing items such as “plantable” stationery and a natural watercolour painting set, inviting you to rejuvenate and enjoy a slower pace of life through low-intensity activities like painting and drawing during your stay.

When it comes to dining, each accommodation is equipped with a microwave for heating up your microwavable meals. Feeling like whipping up something nourishing for your body and soul? Tiny Escape offers a smokeless barbecue grill, perfect for cooking ready-to-grill items from SOL. Over at Into The Woods, they provide a cast iron pan and soup pot with a portable cassette stove with gas cassette, along with other basic cooking equipment, allowing you to cook to your heart’s desire.

With Singaporeans adopting a slower pace in life, getaways like these are all you need for a weekend rejuvenation before gearing up to take on the hustle and bustle of city life.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but recently, lab-grown diamonds have been a topic of both intrigue and controversy. This innovative and viable alternative to naturally mined diamonds, are not just any dazzling gemstones, they are genuine diamonds, born from a marriage of science and artistry, designed to capture the hearts of those who not just seek splendour, but also affordability and sustainability.

In this guide, we journey through the glittering world of lab-grown diamonds, exploring their creation, history, and the myths surrounding them, all while comparing them to their natural counterparts.

What Exactly Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?

The quest to create diamonds in a lab dates back to mid-20th century when scientists discovered methods to recreate the extreme pressure and temperature conditions necessary for diamond formation. In the 1950s, these lab-grown diamonds were initially used for industrial applications. However, it wasn’t until recent decades that the technology advanced enough to produce gem-quality stones.

diamonds

A common myth is that lab-grown diamonds are “fake.” This couldn’t be further from the truth; Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds in every sense, created in the controlled environs of a laboratory which replicates the natural conditions under which diamonds form over billions of years, but within a matter of mere weeks. Far from being mere imitations, these gems embody the true essence of their earth-mined siblings – From the same bewitching beauty and physical properties, down to their atomic structure. This process also results in diamonds that can be larger, more flawless, and created with fewer environmental impacts than their mined equivalents.

There are two primary methods used to create these gems. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) which mimics the natural formation conditions of diamonds within the Earth, using high pressure and high temperature to transform carbon into stunning gemstones. Alternatively, Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD), starts with a thin slice of diamond seed, which is placed in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gases. When these gases are heated, carbon atoms layer onto the diamond seed, causing it to grow.

 Comparing Mined vs Lab-Grown Diamonds

When it comes to comparing lab-grown and mined diamonds, the differences are not in beauty or quality but in origin and impact. Lab-grown diamonds represent a shift towards more ethical and sustainable practices in the jewelry industry. They eliminate the need for mining, which can be environmentally destructive and are also a more ethical choice, sidestepping the often murky supply chains and associated labor issues of mined diamonds.

diamonds

Not to mention, these diamonds often come with a lesser price tag, offering more sparkle for your buck! With control over the growing process, creators are offer a grander customisation spectrum in terms of size, shape, and quality, making our dream gemstone more attainable.

Can we change the world in sixty minutes? Probably not, but dedicating just one hour to our planet can significantly alter the course of our climate emergency. This year, Earth Hour is observed on 23 March 2024, continuing the tradition initiated in 2007. As usual, we are called upon to switch off our lights from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. This gesture might appear small, but when multiplied by millions of households, it becomes a grand deal for the Earth.

In 2024, while embracing the dark, how about partaking in a digital ‘time out’ instead of reaching for that smart companion? To help you unplug, we’ve rounded up some electricity-free things to do for a digital detox.

Stargazing

Earth hour digital detox

Have you ever wondered why counting stars in Singapore is only achievable through a telescope at the Science Centre Observatory or perhaps, a night spent at secluded spots like Changi Beach Park or Labrador Nature Reserve? The city’s luminous skyline often dims the sparkle of the stars overhead, leaving us with but a few glimpses of their brilliance. With lights out, you’ll be able to cuddle up and gaze into the vastness of the night sky and be able to see some stars in the comfort of your nearest park.

Bending the rules ever so slightly, download apps like Star Walk 2 (for iOS and Android) or Skyview Lite (for iOS and Android), which help identify the celestial bodies you’re admiring. Certain Samsung Galaxy phone models also come with the Astrophoto function that names the stars and planets through your phone. You can even go one step further with AstroHyperlapse, which lets you record the movement of the stars.

Candlelight Dinner

Photo by laura adai on Unsplash

When was the last time you had a candle light? Amp up the romance on Earth Day with the gentle illumination of the candle light. Order in and light the candles to transform your home into an intimate haven, or take it outdoors with a cosy candlelit picnic that lets you connect with nature and each other. Turn this into a multi-sensory experience with scented candles that infuse the air with sweet aromas.

Story Circle

Earth Hour Digital Detox

Gather your nearest and dearest for an intimate story circle when the lights go out during Earth Hour. Suitable for indoors or outdoors, make yourselves comfortable and immerse in the warmth of storytelling through shared narratives, laughter, and reflections. Not only are you contributing to the biggest hour for Earth, but you’ll also deepen your connections, building strong relationships. Need some help to get started? Try Hvala conversation cards or smol tok card decks to get the ball rolling. Or, you can scare yourselves silly with urban legends and ghost stories!

Meditate and Reflect

meditate

It’ll be dark anyway; you might as well close your eyes and sit in deep contemplation. Meditation reduces stress, enhances self-awareness, boosts cognitive functions, enhances mood, and improves sleep. Good for the environment and good for you. From mindfulness meditation and guided meditation to transcendental and loving-kindness meditation, choose from the various techniques and practise the one that resonates best with you. Otherwise, you can just focus on the simplicity of breathing meditation.

Art in the Dark

Art supplies

This might get messy, but who knows, it may also turn out to be your best masterpiece yet! Lay out your art supplies – paint, crayons, colour pencils – and watch your self-judgement fizzle out as the lights dim, allowing you to express yourself on paper freely. Art in therapy has been known to reduce stress and anxiety, and to some, it is also a form of meditation. Paint or draw with both your dominant and non-dominant hands, and see what comes up for you. Try it with both hands simultaneously and activate both sides of your brain at the same time. When the lights come back on, look to your creations for insight into your inner thoughts and feelings.

Sleep

Earth Hour Digital Detox

Honour your natural circadian rhythm by going to sleep when the lights are out. It may not be common knowledge, but Singaporeans are the third most sleep-deprived city in a 2023 study. Apparently, only 17% of us slept through the night, and only one in four sleep more than seven hours a day. Besides bestowing us with those deep-set panda eyes, a lack of sleep affects both our physical and mental well-being. So, take the time this Earth Hour to catch up on lost sleep. You’ll wake up feeling as fresh as a flower.

In an era where coffee appears to be in inexhaustible supply, two food-tech entrepreneurs have joined forces to launch Prefer. A pioneering startup poised to tackle the sustainability challenges of conventional coffee bean farming, Prefer transforms food by-products into delicious and environmentally friendly coffee alternatives by utilising advanced fermentation technology. Making its debut in Singapore and across Asia, the company is set to redefine our coffee consumption experience through an exciting intersection of innovation and environmental stewardship.

The dynamic duo behind Prefer

Prefer’s Co-Founders Tan Ding Jie & Jake Berber

Founded in late 2022, Prefer emerged from the collaboration between food scientist Tan Ding Jie and former neuroscientist Jake Berber. The duo, who initially connected at an Entrepreneur First program, shared a common goal of developing sustainable food solutions. Capitalising on Ding Jie’s expertise in food innovation and Jake’s background in the investment sector, they honed in on fermentation biotechnology as their primary focus. They were motivated by the skyrocketing coffee consumption in the region as well as the substantial carbon footprint associated with coffee production, therefore deciding to create a sustainable coffee variant.

A post shared by Prefer (@prefercoffeesg)

With projections suggesting a notable decrease in arable land for coffee cultivation by 2050 due to climate change, potentially causing supply disruptions and a surge in demand, Prefer aims to address these issues head-on. Their goal is to provide cost-effective, sustainable, and personalised bean-free coffee options. After a year of focused product development, backed by organisations such as Entrepreneur First, A*STAR, and Enterprise Singapore, Prefer is finally ready to present their bean-free product to coffee drinkers like us.

How, exactly, is bean-free coffee made?

Prefer stumbled upon a groundbreaking revelation during their research journey – the intriguing similarity in flavour molecules between coffee and unexpected candidates like bread, soy, and barley. Since traditional raw ingredient procurement could further increase operational costs and carbon emissions, Prefer approached local food manufacturing companies to be able to upcycle their by-products. These sources include day-old bread from Gardenia, soybean pulp from the renowned Mr. Bean franchise, and spent barley grains from local breweries like The 1925 Brewing Co. and Brewerkz.

Once these unconventional ingredients are collected, they are blended in a secret ratio, and the mixture then undergoes fermentation. This then goes into a roasting oven to aromatic depths and distinctive flavours, and is ground to the preferred fineness. This entire process unfolds in a mere 48 hours, a stark contrast to the prolonged timelines associated with traditional coffee production.

While Prefer’s coffee grounds are proudly caffeine-free, the beauty lies in the flexibility to infuse caffeine derived from tea, allowing you to tailor your coffee experience. The fermentation process also opens doors for Prefer to craft flavours reminiscent of coffee profiles from distant lands like Ethiopia and Columbia, all within the confines of the same facility. This not only eliminates import mark-ups, but also positions Prefer to set accessible prices for businesses and their customers.

How to enjoy Prefer coffee?

To elevate your coffee experience. Prefer’s versatile bean-free coffee can be ground to various consistencies, catering to a spectrum of brewing methods, from fine espresso to medium-coarse drip brewing. The coffee’s aroma tantalises with malty and nutty notes reminiscent of dark roasted beans, captivating coffee enthusiasts from the very first whiff.

Prefer’s current iteration shines brightest as a cappuccino or latte – enjoyed with either traditional dairy or plant-based milk – with flavour profiles presenting a delightful marriage of cereal and hazelnut. This is accompanied by an earthy bitterness and subtle acidity, meticulously calibrated to mirror the nuances of traditional coffee.

The extraction process, seamlessly integrated into coffee machine brewing, demands no extra steps and maintains the same brewing time as traditional coffee. Baristas and coffee aficionados will particularly value the presence of crema, affording the opportunity for creating intricate latte art. Furthermore, the extracted coffee seamlessly lends itself to classic coffee-based cocktails.

Find it in Singapore

If you’re eager to try Prefer Coffee on the go, you can indulge at various cafes, including Dough, Brash Boys, First Story Cafe, Foreword Coffee Roasters, and Parched by Parchmen, among others!

And so…?

Looking beyond the world of coffee, the duo harbours aspirations to tackle other crops threatened by climate change, including cacao, vanilla, and citrus. Their vision involves leveraging fermentation technology to create alternative sources for flavours, bypassing the need for traditional harvesting methods. Ding Jie caps it off with this vision:

Fermentation is as old as human civilisation and has been historically used to craft flavours, preserve ingredients and enhance nutrition content in foods. Through Prefer, we want to further its conventional  use by leveraging cutting-edge science to create a line of sustainable flavours that’s accessible to everyone  while conserving the environment.”

Prefer is available across multiple locations island-wide. For more information, please visit their website.
