The space is intimate (you’re standing while you sip), but the brews make up for it. Expect no frills—just exceptional espresso, or filtered coffee and a quick chat with friendly baristas.

Good Measure

If you’re after a cafe that mixes solid brunch vibes with excellent coffee, Good Measure is your jam. Located in Carlton, this spot has that laid-back aesthetic that invites you to stay a little longer. If you need a recommendation, their signature Mont Blanc (A$8) is a crowd favourite with filter coffee, dark sugar, cream, orange & nutmeg. Whilst other options include Nitro Cold Brew (A$7), and Soy Matcha Latte (From A$7) together with bites like Ramen Egg Salad (A$16) and Pastrami DLX (A$16). If you’re looking for a mid-day pick-me-up, the beer taps start from 1pm onwards, or you can opt for a glass of cocktail or a nice wine. For all the minimalist lovers, Path Melbourne is where style meets substance. This North Melbourne gem has a Scandi-inspired, clean aesthetic that makes your Instagram feed look like *chef’s kiss*. But the coffee? Equally impressive. You’ll find smooth, rich blends that are the perfect companion for their simple yet flavour-packed pastries. If you’re not a coffee expert, the menu also makes it far easier to order blends with each one grouped into four broad flavour profiles – Citrus, Floral, Berry, Chocolate. If you still need help, you can always consult their knowledgeable staff. It’s a bit pricey, but the experience is worth it.

Want something a little more low-key? Two Conversations, located in South Melbourne, is a quaint spot where you can enjoy both good coffee and good company (hence the name). They offer a rotating coffee selection, so there’s always something new to try. And while the menu is minimal, what they do offer is executed to perfection. Their Batch brew (From A$4) is perfect for those who want a smooth, easy-drinking coffee, and the Flat White is equally amazing. They also have a small selections of baked goods, and their popular Croffle (A$9), which sells out super quick!

If you’re all about that third-wave coffee scene, Maker is a must-visit. With an industrial-chic design and some of the best brews in town, this place is for coffee lovers. Their single origin coffee beans are sourced from top roasters around the world, and the baristas here are true coffee connoisseur. Opt for their Filter Coffee, or go for their Espresso, perfect if’ve you’ve got time for a slow mornings filled with indulgent sips. While they’re primarily coffee-focused, they offer simple yet delicious toasties and pastries pair beautifully with their brews  – must tires include the Three Cheese Toastie with Thyme Toastie and the Cinnamon Buns from Söt by Mörk.

Disciple Roasters in Brunswick is the epitome of craftsmanship. It’s a small, tucked-away spot that focuses on specialty coffee with a level of dedication that’s impressive. The industrial interior adds to the cool, understated vibe, whilst the premium selection of 15 black coffees and retail bags is an excuse to keep returning for something new. Their espresso is unmatched, for those who appreciate their coffee strong and pure.

If you’re looking for a cafe that feels like a well-kept secret, Capulus & Co is the place to go. This little gem is all about delivering quality coffee in a laid-back, cosy setting. The cafe is family-run, operating out the front window of a home. Though their focus is house-made Focaccia, and other baked goods, coffee here still shines. You’ll find classic drinks like filter coffee, chai, teas, hot chocolate as well as creative interpretations like Double Orange Mocha Frappuccino.

A pioneer in Melbourne’s specialty coffee scene, Seven Seeds Coffee Roasters is an institution. Located in Carlton, this spacious cafe and roasters has been serving up some of the best coffee in the city since 2007. They roast their beans in-house, sourcing them from top farms around the world. It’s the perfect spot for both coffee aficionados and casual sippers alike. For something different than the usual, the Vanilla Malt Milkshake is the ideal choice. Alternatively, we also find ourselves drooling over the Bombay Beef Rendang, and  Jordy’s Boston Beans with bacon beans stew, goat cheese, dukkah, crispy curry leaves, and poached egg on sourdough.

Cambodia’s Pride Week takes place in May and is filled with events, workshops and even a parade with a tuk-tuk race. Visit its capital, Phnom Penh, to immerse in the small but vibrant LGBTQ+ scene at its community-centred bars and restaurants or head to Angkor Wat for gay-owned cafes and cabarets. The Pearl of the South China Sea, Hong Kong, known for their bustling food scene, from local cha chaan teng to Michelin-starred restaurants, boasts an equally vibrant LGBTQ+ community. In fact, they attract the global community with their well-organised events and parties such as the Lesbian Gay Film Festival and Pink Season, the annual gay festival that paints West Kowloon Cultural District Art Park pink with performances, parties, and more! The city even hosted the 2023 Gay Games, the world’s largest sporting and cultural event for LGBTQ athletes, artists, and musicians. Japan

Although public displays of affection, of any sexuality, are frowned upon here, Japan is a warm haven for LGBTQ+. Not only is same-sex partnership recognised in Tokyo, but you’ll also find LGBTQ+ travel tips on the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) site. Tokyo’s queer nightlife is concentrated in Shinjuku, where Japan’s first permanent LGBTQ+ centre, Pride House, proudly stands. Make your way to Shinjuku’s Ni-Chome area and pick from over 400 nightclubs and bars peppered along the unassuming roads. Plan a trip in April and dress up for the Tokyo Rainbow Pride, Japan’s largest pride celebration near Yoyogi Park. Osaka, a featured destination by the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, has held the annual Kansai Rainbow Festa and Parade at Ogimachi Park since 2006. 

Thailand

Thailand, with its wide acceptance of sexual and gender diversity, has been the top destination for LGBTQ+ travellers from all over the world. Besides having some of the liveliest gay scenes in the world, especially in the Silom district, Bangkok, Thailand offers a slew of world-class resorts, gastronomy, and nightlife activities in Pattaya and Phuket too. Don’t forget the pristine beaches of Krabi and the hot springs of Pai which come with plenty of LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations. Join in the fun at Phuket Pride, running on 29 June 2024 at Talat Yai, Phuket, with a live concert, wellness events, and a parade of a large rainbow flag through the old town. This is Phuket’s way of welcoming one and all!

Taiwan

On the legal front, Taiwan sets the benchmark for LGBTQ rights in Asia, being the first Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage in 2019. But this progressive attitude doesn’t just stop there. It is even reflected in its education system which covers inclusive sex education and gender fluidity. Besides the country’s breathtaking sceneries, night markets, food, and shopping, its capital, Taipei is home to East Asia’s largest Pride march, with as many as 170,000 people filling the streets. The convivial event held in October, also includes the highly-anticipated Rainbow Music Festival with a White Ball and live performances from DJs from around the world. Beyond Taipei, cities like Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Tainan are also LGBTQ+ friendly, with Kaohsiung running its own annual Pride celebrations too! 

The Philippines

It might be due to culture and history that Filipinos have a more fluid concept of gender. In fact, gender-crossing practices date back to pre-colonial communities where feminized men were seen as being similar to women (except for child-bearing). And in the Suludnon mythology, women can transform into male warriors. Its warm acceptance and tolerance, together with its charming islands and villages, make The Philippines a popular LGBTQ+-friendly destination. Many visit the country for the beautiful and diverse dive spots around Palawan Island and Boracay for its pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. But Manila is the centre of LGBTQ+ events like the annual Manila Metro Pride, which sees the gathering of over 100,000 visitors to the event in June.

Australia

Supported by its anti-discrimination laws, legalised same-sex marriage, and LGBTQ+ friendliness, Australia fosters a welcoming environment for the LGBTQ+ community, especially during its annual Pride celebration in February, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Beyond the festivities, visit Darlinghurst, the historic hub of Australia’s gay rights movement for your dose of queer history. Head to the Darlinghurst Bookshop for its collection of queer literature and media. Dive into the vibrant LGBTQ+ nightlife in Sydney in iconic clubs and bars like The Imperial Erskineville, and the Stonewall Hotel. Otherwise, other regions like Cairns and Port Douglas, gateways to the Great Barrier Reef, are queer-friendly too.

Greece

Pristine beaches, stunning architecture, and vibrant party scene, it’s no wonder that Greece, particularly Mykonos, stands out as an LGBTQ-friendly destination. After all, it is the first Christian Orthodox-majority country to legalise same-sex marriage, with the legal right to adoption. Although the legislation was only set in place in February 2024, Mykonos has been hosting the XLSIOR Mykonos International Summer Gay Festival every August, attracting thousands with non-stop parties, international DJs, and live performances. Additionally, beaches like Super Paradise and Elia Beach offer a tranquil sanctuary for the gay community. For glowing sunsets, seaside dining, and partying, head to Little Venice, a little village known to be a charming gay-bourhood. Vasse Felix

OG Margaret River winery Vasse Felix was the first to be established in the region, when founder Tom Cullity planted a vineyard in Cowarumup back in 1967. Today the winery is home to a stunning property, with beautiful sprawling vineyards of Cabernet, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc. Its cellar door is world-renowned, offering guided tastings at the bar or a more leisurely seated option for those preferring to lounge. Wine lovers can also book a behind-the-scenes tour of the winery, or even sign up for a full-day “cape to vine” tour hosted by expert local guides. Be sure to drop in on its award-winning restaurant too; Head Chef Brendan Pratt’s take on modern Australian cuisine pairs exceptionally well with their wine collection.

Cape Mentelle

Another pioneering Margaret River vineyard, Cape Mentelle was founded in 1970 when the Hohnen brothers planted their first 16 hectares of vines in what is now their flagship Wallcliffe vineyard. It’s also here at its cellar door that visitors can immerse themselves in a full Cape Mentelle experience. Wine enthusiasts can sign up for a private wine tasting in its original 1970 cellar, go on a guided tour that comes with a food and wine pairing session, or picnic on its lawn. Fun fact: its lawn hosts a very popular outdoor cinema during the summer months. True-blue oenophiles should coincide their visit when the winery hosts its International Cabernet Tasting, an annual affair that sees top Margaret River cabernets match up against its counterparts from the best wineries around the world.

Cullen Wines

Another important pioneer Margaret River winery of note is Cullen Wines. Founded by Kevin and Diana Cullen in 1971 who converted their sheep and cattle farm at Wilyabrup to grow grapes, Cullen consistently produces some of the most impressive Cabernet and Chardonnay to come out of the region. Today it is one of the foremost wineries in the region practising biodynamic winemaking. Aside from guided tastings at their ‘Biodynamic Wine Room’, visitors can enjoy a four-course lunch paired with its biodynamic wines or embark on a self-guided garden tour to learn more about biodynamic winemaking practices.

Flametree Wines

If you’re headed up towards Cape Naturaliste, the quaint and cutesy beach house on Caves Road along scenic Geographe Bay that is the cellar door of Flametree Wines makes for the perfect pitstop. Here you can sample its award-winning range of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines so representative of Margaret River, or experiment with its subregional series that explore beyond the confines of the region. Come during Margaret River’s annual Fine Vines Festival when Flametree Wines hosts ‘In Praise of Pink’, a celebration of rosé wines that sees the town turn up in pink.

Voyager Estate

Voyager Estate may not be among the first wineries to have set up in the region, but it’s certainly grown to become one of its biggest names. This second generation family-owned estate is located in Stevens Valley, a site highly rated for its distinct gravelly soils that produce some stunning Cabernet and Shiraz. More importantly for wine lovers, Voyager Estate offers one of the most comprehensive suite of visitor experiences available in Margaret River, from wine tastings and an estate tour to a fabulously indulgent wine-drenched degustation lunch in its stately dining room. Make sure you set aside some time to stroll its beautifully manicured Victorian-style gardens as well.

Leeuwin Estate

If you love art as much as you do wine, a visit to Leeuwin Estate is in order. One of the biggest names in Margaret River, the family-owned winery founded in 1973 is actually home to a unique collection of contemporary Australian artworks that feature as labels on its acclaimed ‘Art Series’ range of wines. But that’s not all. Aside from a classy cellar door, Leeuwin hosts a fabulous award-winning restaurant on its premises offering a three- or four-course tasting menu featuring exceptional seasonal West Australian produce. For years, Leewin’s exceptionally beautiful grounds played host the annual Gourmet Escape food and wine festival.

Arimia Estate

Here’s a winery conservationists will love. Established in 1997, Arimia Estate is an almost entirely self-sufficient winery located that operates ‘off the grid’ and makes wine following organic practices. Sample its innovative estate-grown wines made from a diverse range of grapes at the inviting and relaxed cellar door largely built from recycled or plantation timber. Or pair them over lunch at Arimia’s restaurant. Here Chef Evan Hayter curates an exciting nose-to-tail menu using farm-grown produce – they have their own in-house gardener! – such as pork and trout raised on their property.

Clairault Streicker

Stretched for time? Drop into Clairault Streicker. This Margaret River grower and wine producer makes wines from two different wine estates, Clairault and Streicker. Clairault gives an authentic snapshot of Margaret River wine styles blended from grapes harvested from across the family-owned producer’s four distinct vineyard sites, while Streicker is more focused on single estate expressions. While Clairault Streicker doesn’t offer a winery visit, its cellar door at Wilyabrup offers some fun wine-focused experiences – such as a blending session or wine-drenched picnic on its lawn – as well as a fantastic cafe restaurant that puts out casual, seasonal Australian grub.

Pierro

Don’t let Pierro’s modest and rustic-looking cellar door at fool you. Its warm wooden interiors may look dated and old; its artisanal winemaking is anything but. Pierro founder Dr Mike Peterkin was a trailblazing pioneer winemaker in his day – he produced the first Semillon Sauvignon Blanc in Margaret River and helped establish that style in the region, for example – and the winery continues to produce cutting-edge wines that regularly pick up accolades in the wine awards circuit.

Howard Park Wines

Looking for a beautiful spot for a picnic? We can’t recommend Howard Park enough. Part of Burch Family Wines, family-owned Howard Park has been crafting quality wines for over three decades and its cellar door at Cowaramup offers a sprawling lawn overseeing its Leston vineyard that’s perfect for a picnic. Even better, Howard Park regularly organises events and outdoor festivals where you can lounge on the lawn with their lovely wines – including some top-notch sparkling wines – over pumping music and food truck eats.

Passel Estate

Love nature? Be sure to drop into Passel Estate in Cowaramup. Passel Estate’s tasting room – a stunningly picturesque property in the middle of native bushland – is also home to a possum sanctuary. If you come in the right season, Passel Estate owners Wendy and Barry Stimpson can guide you on one of their private wine and nature walks where you get to taste their wines right next to the vines that provided the fruit that went into your glass, and check out the cubby holes where displaced and injured possums are rehabilitated. Otherwise there are wine tasting sessions where you are guided through a flight Passel Estate’s award-winning single vineyard wines.

Snake + Herring

Snake + Herring runs a small and laidback little cellar door along Caves Road in Wilyabrup worth checking out if you prefer a more iconoclastic approach to winemaking. The boutique winery operation embraces much of Western Australia’s Southwest wine regions, going beyond Margaret River in search of remarkable grapes from lesser-known subregions. The result is a range of fun and eclectic wines that celebrate the entire region; think Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay from Margaret River, but also Shiraz and Grenache from Frankland River, Riesling from Mount Barker, and Chardonnay from Porongurup from the Great Southern wine region.
