Clockenflap isn’t just a music festival. It’s part of Hong Kong’s cultural infrastructure, an annual ritual that reclaims the city’s public space with sound, movement, and shared experience. From 5 to 7 December 2025, Clockenflap returns to the Central Harbourfront, anchoring itself once again at the intersection of music, art, and everyday urban life.

This year marks 15 years since the festival first opened its gates, and it continues to evolve with the city around it. What began as a scrappy, independent gathering has become one of Asia’s most anticipated festivals, not by scaling up endlessly, but by staying close to the city it was built for.

A Lineup That Crosses Borders and Generations

The 2025 edition brings with it a lineup that spans decades and continents. Bloc Party headlines Saturday night with their first-ever Hong Kong performance, an overdue arrival for one of the UK’s most influential indie rock acts. My Bloody Valentine closes Sunday with a rare live set that will likely be one of the weekend’s most talked-about moments. On Friday, J-pop’s phenomenon Vaundy appears for the first time outside Japan, adding youthful voltage to the programme.

Elsewhere, the curation feels like a mixtape made with intent. From Franz Ferdinand’s irrepressible post-punk to the melancholic poetics of Bright Eyes, from the trip-hop ether of Beth Gibbons to the cinematic sprawl of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the festival traverses multiple sonic worlds with a coherence that’s more felt than declared.

Emerging voices from Asia and beyond: Thai troubadour Phum Viphurit, Indonesian rapper Rich Brian, Polish guitar virtuoso Marcin, add layers of texture and surprise, reflecting Clockenflap’s ethos of cultural cross-pollination.

More Than Music

Clockenflap has never been just about music. This year’s centrepiece, Minimax: The Planets, reimagines Gustav Holst’s celestial suite as a roving kinetic theatre work, part dance, part sculpture, part social experiment. Conceived by Clockenflap’s own Jay Hofmann-Forster and realised by Screw Up Studio, it draws audiences into a ritualised performance that moves through the festival’s architecture.

Full artist lineup for Clockenflap 2025 in Hong Kong, featuring Bloc Party, My Bloody Valentine, Vaundy, Beth Gibbons, and over 60 acts across 3 days.
Full lineup

With five stages spread across the site, there’s no single centre of gravity. One moment might find you caught in a rush of UK electro at the Robot Stage; the next, quietly listening to a solo set on the grassy incline near Park Stage. The spaces in between: the art installations, food stalls, and spontaneous interactions, are just as important as the headline acts.

Local Energy, Regional Reach

At its core, Clockenflap is a portrait of its host city. In 2025, that means more local collaboration than ever: rappers Billy Choi and Ki Chan join forces with YouTube personality JFFT; jazz collective Fountain de Chopin partners with vocalist Lai Ying. These are not side acts, but centrepieces in their own right.

Food, too, is part of the conversation. Sixteen of the city’s most compelling food concepts, from TamJai’s fiery noodle broths to craft tacos and vegan gelato, serve as an edible index of Hong Kong’s evolving foodscape.

And Clockenflap is just the beginning. For those arriving from out of town (or locals looking to see their city anew), there’s plenty more to explore beyond the harbourfront. From steaming baskets of dim sum at timeless teahouses to the city’s new wave of boundary-pushing bars and hotels, Hong Kong’s cultural revival is happening at every level. Rediscover the city with our guide to new experiences, hotels, and restaurants, or plan a morning-after recharge with our take on where to go for Yum Cha in Hong Kong.

Family-Friendly, Future-Facing

One of Clockenflap’s defining features is its multigenerational appeal. Alongside the main programming, there’s a full slate of children’s workshops, performance spaces, and interactive installations. The festival design allows for both immersion and pause for music lovers, families, and the simply curious.

Sustainability isn’t tacked on as a gesture. It’s embedded in the experience: biodegradable packaging, refill stations, and a push to reduce waste without diminishing joy.

For three days each year, Clockenflap turns the city inside out. It offers a version of Hong Kong that’s lighter on hierarchy, looser in rhythm, and more open to the unexpected. You don’t just attend Clockenflap. You move through it, along with thousands of others, each drawn by their own reasons and finding new ones along the way.

Clockenflap 2025 runs from 5 to 7 December at the Central Harbourfront. Tickets are available via clockenflap.com with three-day General Admission passes at HK$1,990 and single-day tickets at HK$1,280. Discounts are available for under-18s, and children under three enter free. For artist updates and behind-the-scenes previews, follow @clockenflap on Instagram.

Situated along Lockhart Road in the culturally rich Wan Chai district, where old Hong Kong tenements meet gleaming towers and traditional shops sit alongside sleek galleries, The Hari Hong Kong doesn’t just offer a place to stay, it presents a lifestyle. Conveniently located about a 9-minute walk from the Wan Chai MTR station, the hotel offers both accessibility and allure. In a city where cookie-cutter luxury hotels often dominate the skyline, The Hari is a refreshing blend of understated elegance, cultural consciousness, and modern comfort. Five years since its opening, the property continues to strike a fine balance between business-travel utility and boutique charm.

Rooms & Interior: Home, With a Side of Heritage

a image of one of the rooms at the hari hong kong reflecting into the glass, with a skyscraper view in the background

Designed by Tara Bernerd, The Hari leans heavily into texture and tactility. Think layered velvets, brushed wood, Italian marble, and curated artworks that make the space feel more like a well-lived-in residence than a hotel. Even the entrance avoids the usual grandiose lobby, opting instead for a homely reception lounge that whispers hospitality instead of shouting it.

The 210 rooms span four categories, crowned by three signature suites: The Library, The Chesham, and The Hari Suite. The Premium Corner Room, with its sweeping views and six-point bathroom layout, is a favourite for good reason. Art changes seasonally, with works by shortlisted artists from The Hari Art Prize adorning the walls. This initiative, open to emerging talent in Hong Kong, shows that the hotel is serious about being part of the city’s creative narrative.

Guests may not notice at first glance, but sustainability is quietly embedded into the DNA here. There are no plastic water bottles or single-use toiletries. In-room amenities, including their house-branded bath products, are designed with both style and eco-consciousness in mind. Food waste is treated with an in-house composting machine, and water used for the hotel’s greenery is thoughtfully timed. It’s an admirable approach that more properties in Wan Chai and across Hong Kong should take note of.

Dining: Modern Japanese Cool Meets Italian Flair

The Hari plays host to not one, but two compelling culinary experiences. Zoku, the hotel’s contemporary Japanese restaurant, is more than a stylish spot for Instagrammable cocktails. It’s where East-meets-West sensibilities are served with nuance and flair. Our dinner featured the six-course “Discovering Zoku” menu, which offered a vibrant introduction to their culinary philosophy. The wagyu selections — from otoshi to sushi to the A4 wagyu steak with arima sancho sauce and beetroot — were melt-in-the-mouth memorable. We recommend pairing the menu with their curated sake flight, which offers a layered, thoughtful complement to each dish.

Adjacent to Zoku, the alfresco Terrace area is the ideal after-hours drinking spot. During our midweek visit, it was buzzing with non-hotel guests seeking out cocktails and conversation above the city.

an image of the lucciola, the italian restaurant located in the hari hong kong in wanchai
Interior of Lucciola

Meanwhile, Lucciola (an Italian slang for prostitute, a wink to Wan Chai’s historic red-light district) brings a slice of Piedmont to Hong Kong. Located on the reception level, this warm Italian eatery also doubles up as the hotel’s breakfast venue. By day, it’s abuzz with guests sipping cappuccinos and digging into freshly baked pastries; by night, it transforms into a charming date spot serving up modern trattoria fare.

The Lounge, adjacent to the check-in area, deserves a shoutout of its own. More than just a transitional space, it’s an elegantly appointed co-working haven. We found ourselves sinking into velvet armchairs over coffee meetings and quick lunches, enveloped in a cozy, luxe atmosphere that encouraged both focus and downtime. It’s the kind of inviting, well-designed space that modern travellers and locals in Wan Chai look for when they want a comfortable setting to catch up on work, meet clients, or simply relax with a drink. And if you’re eyeing a business presence in the city, you can find here details about ready-made companies.

an image of the reception / lounge area in the hari hong kong, wanchai
Reception floor at The Hari Hong Kong

All dining venues are helmed by chefs who clearly understand balance: between tradition and invention, indulgence and lightness, local ingredients and international technique.

Amenities & Facilities: Not Just for Show

The Hari Hong Kong understands that its guests are often here for more than just leisure. Business travellers will appreciate the co-working-friendly Lounge and the seamless WiFi. But it’s in the cultural programming that the hotel truly sets itself apart.

The Hari Art Prize, a collaboration with London-based art advisory A Space for Art, isn’t just about displaying pretty pictures. It’s about investing in the region’s creative future. The winning artists receive cash prizes, exhibition opportunities, and media exposure; and guests get to be surrounded by art that feels alive and immediate.

an image of the hari hong kong's lobby floor with large leather couches and a beautiful piece of art above hanging above the couches.
The Lobby at The Hari Hong Kong

Equally noteworthy is their commitment to creating a sense of community through “The Hari Chronicles”, a series of fireside chats, panels, and cultural talks hosted onsite. From legendary designers like Henry Steiner to grassroots Hong Kong creatives, these gatherings are shaping the hotel into a kind of urban salon.

And then, of course, there’s the little things: the plush bedroom slippers that feel like clouds, the hidden balconies with skyline views, and the neighbourhood guide that encourages guests to explore Wan Chai beyond the guidebooks. Hotel guests can download the Storius app on their mobiles, request a code from the reception, and gain access to The Hari’s specially curated neighbourhood guides; an insider’s introduction to Wan Chai’s vibrant mix of heritage and modernity.

Final Word

The Hari Hong Kong might market itself as a luxury hotel for the modern business traveller, but it’s much more than that. It’s a love letter to Hong Kong’s layered identity. Sleek and gritty, global and local, old and new. Whether you’re here for a convention, cocktails, or creative inspiration, The Hari stands as a bold, stylish anchor in the ever-evolving narrative of Wan Chai.

Book Direct and Enjoy Guests who book directly with The Hari can enjoy a complimentary first drink, 15% off dining across all F&B venues, and the flexibility of early check-in and late check-out (subject to availability). More details at The Hari’s official website.

Where love is love and humans are humans, we’re putting on our prettiest pink to celebrate inclusivity and diversity all-year round and around the globe. Gone are the Stonewall days, where gay bars were randomly raided and discrimination was high, making social spaces unsafe for LGBTQ. Today, along with legal rights and anti-discrimination laws in place, more destinations are embracing the vibrancy of diversity, with Pride celebrations, LGBTQ+ establishments, and more importantly, a welcoming attitude. Let’s get out and proud as we explore LGBTQ+ friendly destinations around the world.

Cambodia

LGBTQ friendly destinations Cambodia
Photo by Daniel Lazarov on Pexels

From the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat to the vibrant cocktail scene, Cambodia is one of the more LGBTQ+-friendly destinations in Asia where sexual diversity is legal and socially accepted in the cities. Even its head of state, King Norodom Sihamoni supported the rights of LGBTQ+ in a public statement. Cambodia’s Pride Week takes place in May and is filled with events, workshops and even a parade with a tuk-tuk race. Visit its capital, Phnom Penh, to immerse in the small but vibrant LGBTQ+ scene at its community-centred bars and restaurants or head to Angkor Wat for gay-owned cafes and cabarets. Looking for a curated itinerary? Q Travel Cambodia is an LGBTQ+-friendly group of licensed tour guides you can call on. One thing to note when visiting, queer or not, appropriate attire and behaviours are required when exploring the temples or cultural places. Cover up and refrain from public displays of affection. Check our our guide to Phnom Penh here.

Hong Kong

LGBTQ friendly destinations Hong Kong
Photo by Jimmy Chan on Pexels

The Pearl of the South China Sea, Hong Kong, known for their bustling food scene, from local cha chaan teng to Michelin-starred restaurants, boasts an equally vibrant LGBTQ+ community. In fact, they attract the global community with their well-organised events and parties such as the Lesbian Gay Film Festival and Pink Season, the annual gay festival that paints West Kowloon Cultural District Art Park pink with performances, parties, and more! The city even hosted the 2023 Gay Games, the world’s largest sporting and cultural event for LGBTQ athletes, artists, and musicians. From food and culture to sports and events, Hong Kong is a welcoming and exciting LGBTQ+ friendly destination. Read our guide to rediscovering Hong Kong here

Japan

LGBTQ friendly destinations Japan

Although public displays of affection, of any sexuality, are frowned upon here, Japan is a warm haven for LGBTQ+. Not only is same-sex partnership recognised in Tokyo, but you’ll also find LGBTQ+ travel tips on the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) site. Tokyo’s queer nightlife is concentrated in Shinjuku, where Japan’s first permanent LGBTQ+ centre, Pride House, proudly stands. Make your way to Shinjuku’s Ni-Chome area and pick from over 400 nightclubs and bars peppered along the unassuming roads. Plan a trip in April and dress up for the Tokyo Rainbow Pride, Japan’s largest pride celebration near Yoyogi Park. Osaka, a featured destination by the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, has held the annual Kansai Rainbow Festa and Parade at Ogimachi Park since 2006.

Thailand

LGBTQ friendly destinations
Photo by Olivier Darny on Pexels

Thailand, with its wide acceptance of sexual and gender diversity, has been the top destination for LGBTQ+ travellers from all over the world. Besides having some of the liveliest gay scenes in the world, especially in the Silom district, Bangkok, Thailand offers a slew of world-class resorts, gastronomy, and nightlife activities in Pattaya and Phuket too. Don’t forget the pristine beaches of Krabi and the hot springs of Pai which come with plenty of LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations. Join in the fun at Phuket Pride, running on 29 June 2024 at Talat Yai, Phuket, with a live concert, wellness events, and a parade of a large rainbow flag through the old town. This is Phuket’s way of welcoming one and all!

Taiwan

LGBTQ friendly destinations Taiwan

On the legal front, Taiwan sets the benchmark for LGBTQ rights in Asia, being the first Asian country to legalise same-sex marriage in 2019. But this progressive attitude doesn’t just stop there. It is even reflected in its education system which covers inclusive sex education and gender fluidity. Besides the country’s breathtaking sceneries, night markets, food, and shopping, its capital, Taipei is home to East Asia’s largest Pride march, with as many as 170,000 people filling the streets. The convivial event held in October, also includes the highly-anticipated Rainbow Music Festival with a White Ball and live performances from DJs from around the world. Beyond Taipei, cities like Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Tainan are also LGBTQ+ friendly, with Kaohsiung running its own annual Pride celebrations too!

The Philippines

Queer friendly Philippines
Photo by Darwin Frivaldo on Pexels

It might be due to culture and history that Filipinos have a more fluid concept of gender. In fact, gender-crossing practices date back to pre-colonial communities where feminized men were seen as being similar to women (except for child-bearing). And in the Suludnon mythology, women can transform into male warriors. Its warm acceptance and tolerance, together with its charming islands and villages, make The Philippines a popular LGBTQ+-friendly destination. Many visit the country for the beautiful and diverse dive spots around Palawan Island and Boracay for its pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. But Manila is the centre of LGBTQ+ events like the annual Manila Metro Pride, which sees the gathering of over 100,000 visitors to the event in June.

Australia

Queer friendly Australia

Supported by its anti-discrimination laws, legalised same-sex marriage, and LGBTQ+ friendliness, Australia fosters a welcoming environment for the LGBTQ+ community, especially during its annual Pride celebration in February, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Beyond the festivities, visit Darlinghurst, the historic hub of Australia’s gay rights movement for your dose of queer history. Head to the Darlinghurst Bookshop for its collection of queer literature and media. Dive into the vibrant LGBTQ+ nightlife in Sydney in iconic clubs and bars like The Imperial Erskineville, and the Stonewall Hotel. Otherwise, other regions like Cairns and Port Douglas, gateways to the Great Barrier Reef, are queer-friendly too.

Greece

Queer friendly Greece

Pristine beaches, stunning architecture, and vibrant party scene, it’s no wonder that Greece, particularly Mykonos, stands out as an LGBTQ-friendly destination. After all, it is the first Christian Orthodox-majority country to legalise same-sex marriage, with the legal right to adoption. Although the legislation was only set in place in February 2024, Mykonos has been hosting the XLSIOR Mykonos International Summer Gay Festival every August, attracting thousands with non-stop parties, international DJs, and live performances. Additionally, beaches like Super Paradise and Elia Beach offer a tranquil sanctuary for the gay community. For glowing sunsets, seaside dining, and partying, head to Little Venice, a little village known to be a charming gay-bourhood. And if you want to soak up the Greek sun in a private oasis, Akkadian is a gay-only boutique hotel. Check out our guide to Greece here.

Spain

From legalised Queer marriage and adoption to gender confirmation and anti-discrimination measures, Spain ranks high on the queer-friendly list. Big cities embrace queer culture and brim with gay pubs, clubs, and cafes in vibrant gay districts, alongside LGBTQ+ festivals and annual Pride events like the Madrid Ogullo. Top spots to check out include Eixample, also known as “Gay-xample,” the heart of Barcelona’s queer scene and Chueca in Madrid, known to be the largest queer district in Europe. For a dose of Vitamin D, Mar Bella Beach and Barceloneta Beach are some of the best-loved spots in the community. Plan your itinerary with our guide to Barcelona here.

Brazil

Rio de Janeiro stands as Brazil’s LGBTQ+ capital, where the community not only finds acceptance but is also supported through anti-bullying initiatives and discrimination laws. Rua Farme de Amoedo, known as the “gay heart of Rio’s south zone” brims with LGBTQ-friendly bars and party spots. You’ll know you have arrived when you see the large pride flag flying. Just a stone’s throw away is Ipanema Beach, a popular hangout spot to soak up the tropical vibes amidst queer-friendly bars and community. And over at Sao Paulo, their annual pride parade in June draws hundreds and thousands of people marching in unison for “All forms of loving, all forms of being.”

Although synonymous with dim sum, Yum Cha literally means tea time in Hong Kong. Whether it’s your breakfast tea or brunch fare, Yum Cha is a time for dim sum, all-day breakfast, noodles, and more. Beyond small bites from the bamboo baskets, be sure to bookmark these dim sum and Cha Chaan Teng spots for a truly quintessentially Yum Cha experience in Hong Kong .

Cha Chaan Teng

The Australian Dairy Company

You can’t say you’ve been to Hong Kong without visiting this popular cha chaan teng. Besides serving some of the best scrambled eggs on toast and steamed milk custard, they are also known for their super efficiency and service (or lack of), giving you the quintessential cha chaan teng experience. But to be fair, they need to keep the well-oiled system going to feed throngs of time-starved (and starving) customers – so expect no small talk here. Decide what you want outside the shop and don’t hog the seats when you are done. P.S. Apart from it’s name, there’s nothing Australian here!

The Australian Dairy Company is located at 47 Parkes St, Jordan, Hong Kong, p. +852 2730 1356. Open daily 7.30am –10pm.

Sing Heung Yuen (勝香園)

Nestled within an alleyway, Sing Heung Yuen is one of the oldest surviving dai pai dong (open-air food stalls) and a local favourite for Tomato Beef Noodles. The signature dish is made and topped with fresh tomatoes and served with generous slices of beef, a comforting combination so good that even celebrities like Chow Yun Fatt have been spotted here (According to the boss, he’s a regular). Other favourites include the Tomato Soup Macaroni and the crispy Lemon Honey Bun.

Sing Heung Yuen is located at 2 Mee Lun Street, Central, Hong Kong, p.+852 2544 8368. Open Mon – Sat 8am –3.30pm. Closed Sun.

Kam Fung Restaurant (金鳳茶餐廳)

This hole-in-the-wall is a traditional Hong Kong eatery best known for its Bolo Bun (sweet crusted bun that’s known as ‘pineapple’ bun), Egg Tarts, and Chicken Pie. Most regulars will go for the buns with their set meals, even though there is an extra charge, or order them for takeaway. Just like any other Cha Chaan Teng, efficiency is the name of the game, so slurp up your Satay Beef Noodles and make space for other diners in the queue.

Kam Fung Restaurant is located at 41 Spring Garden Ln, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, p.+852 2572 0526. Open daily 7am – 6.45pm.

Chrisly Cafe

What started as an alternative to Australian Dairy Company (ADC) in Wan Chai, Chrisly Cafe, formerly Capital Cafe, has developed its own following with multiple outlets around Hong Kong. Its menu may be similar to ADC but its bougie options like the Scrambled Egg Toast with Black Truffle keep diners coming back. Heartier offerings include Macaroni and Ham with Fried Egg and Corned Beef Sandwich, to be enjoyed alongside traditional milk tea. Be prepared to share tables and eat fast. You might just see another celebrity here too!

Chrisly Cafe has multiple outlets around Hong Kong. Find out more here.

Café Seasons

Café Season’s take on macaroni is anything but ordinary. Their homemade soup, simmered with pig bone and eggshells, is thickened with Japanese rice, which creates a comforting broth that pairs perfectly with macaroni. Here, food is crafted from quality ingredients, just like their velvety smooth scrambled eggswhich use a blend of Japanese, Chinese, and American eggs, sans milk and cream. However, it’s the BBQ Pork Rice with Scrambled Eggs that takes the cake as the best-seller. Their affordable lunch sets are hugely popular, so try to avoid dropping by from 12pm2pm, unless queuing is on your agenda.

Cafe Seasons is located at  88 Des Voeux Rd Central, Central, Hong Kong, p.  +852 2650 2088. Open daily 7.30am –8pm.

Dim Sum

Luk Yu Teahouse (陸羽茶室)

At Luk Yu Teahouse, time seems to come to a standstill; its furniture and furnishings are from more than 90 years ago, and even its staff have been working there for decades. Generations of regular customers gather on the first floor for their daily dim sum breakfast, leaving the second and third floors for other diners. However, those fill up quickly tooIt is said they even had to turn down a visit from the Queen of the UK. Locals and tourists come for traditionally prepared dim sum served like Char Siew Bun, Prawn Toast, Egg Tarts, and more, served via the dim sum trolley. Not the cheapest dim sum but definitely the most nostalgic.

Luk Yu Teahouse is located at 24-26 Stanley St, Central, Hong Kong, p. +852 2523 5464. Open daily 7am –3pm.

One Dim Sum  (一點心)

One Dim Sum is a wallet-friendly dim sum spot that won the hearts of Michelin inspectors in 2011 and 2012. Popular among locals and expats, you’ll have to strategise your visit – either arrive before they open or skip weekends – to save you from waiting in the queue. Steamed Beef Balls and Dumplings are a hot favourite here – juicy and succulent. Made the traditional way, BBQ Pork Buns are steamed until pillowy soft, then filled with sweet and savoury pork to the brim. Totally affordable and delicious.

One Dim Sum is located at G/F, 209A Tung Choi St, Prince Edward, Hong Kong, p. +852 2677 7888. Open daily 9.30am –10.30pm

Yum Cha HK (飲茶)

Yum Cha HK

Known for their innovative and iconic BBQ Piggy Buns, Yum Cha HK is the spot for a fun and delicious experience that’ll fill your tummy and your Instagram feed. Some diners have been having fun with the oozing Hot Custard Buns (Liu sha bao), while others are wolfing down all the baos and dumplings they can get. But keep a lookout for its seasonal menu that features new creations or order classic Chinese dishes like the crowd-favourite Sweet and Sour Pork.

Yum Cha HK is located at  2/F, Nan Fung Place, Nan Fung Tower, 173 Des Voeux Rd Central, Central, Hong Kong, p.+852 3541 9710. Open daily 11.30am –3pm & 5.30pm – 10pm.

Sun Hing Restaurant (新興食家)

Yum Cha in Hong Kong

One for the night owls or the super early risers! The chefs at Sun Hing Restaurant begin their work when most people are in bed, rolling dough and wrapping dumplings in the middle of the night to serve piping hot dim sum to the hungry crowd at 3am. Eating here is not for the faint of heart; once you beat the queue, jostle your way to your seats (plastic stools) before ordering the freshly made Siew Mai and Salted Egg Custard Bun. Other outstanding dishes to try include Loh Mai Kai and Fried Milk.

Sun Hing Restaurant is located at G/F, 8 Smithfield Rd, Markfield Building, Kennedy Town, Hong Kong, p. +852 2816 0616. Open daily 3am –4pm.

Tim Ho Wan

Sure, we have ten outlets here in Singapore, but nothing beats trying the original and Michelin-starred Tim Ho Wan at Sham Shui Po. The cosy 20-seater restaurant, where it all started, snagged its first star one year after opening; at one time, it was said to be the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurant in the world. Savour your favourite items like BBQ Bun, Steamed Turnip Cake, Har Gow, Siew Mai, and more, and see if it’s any different from what we have here in Singapore.

Tim Ho Wan Sham Shui Po is located at G/F, 9-11 Fuk Wing Street, Shan Shui Po, p.+852 27881226.

As a women-led publication, City Nomads proudly champions the voices of trailblazing women who continually shatter barriers and redefine industries. International Women’s Day serves as an opportune moment to not only celebrate these remarkable individuals but also to emphasise our unwavering commitment to female empowerment — an ongoing dedication that extends far beyond this annual celebration, and stands as a constant and integral part of our ethos. In a series of features spanning diverse sectors such as food, beauty, community service, and more, we aim to spotlight the stories of women who have made indelible marks in their respective fields.

Our inaugural feature introduces May Chow, an extraordinary figure in the culinary world, fresh off a bustling guest shift at Singapore’s very own Junior The Pocket Bar as part of her 2024 Asia Tour.

In the dynamic world of culinary arts, where flavours collide, traditions merge, and innovation reigns supreme, May Chow stands as a trailblazer. Renowned for her appearances on global TV shows like Top Chef and featured in prestigious publications May also holds the title of Asia’s 50 Best Female Chef (2017),  a testament to her dedication to pushing boundaries and challenging the norms.

A Culinary Journey Shaped by Passion

To take you to the beginning, May’s culinary journey was a revelation after realising her passion during a marketing internship in a hotel. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, she shares, “Imagine the shock after studying 4 years in a hotel management school. I had to face myself and dig deep about what I could find passion in and what I was good at. I always loved and excelled in cooking with my mom. I have a big belief that my career chose me as much as I chose my career.”

Little Bao
Little Bao

The inception of Little Bao, her acclaimed restaurant in Hong Kong, reflects her diverse life experiences, seamlessly blending East and West, tradition and innovation, all while keeping things irresistibly tasty.  Reimagining traditional Baos for a modern palate, May compares it to remixing a classic track, respecting the original while adding a contemporary twist, and striking that chord that makes both your grandma as well as your trendy friend nod in approval.

If you’re new to her grounds, her must-try dishes include the iconic pork belly bao, truffle fries, and an unforgettable ice cream bao. May emphasises, “It’s like a crash course in what we’re all about – bold, playful, and utterly delicious.”

“It’s all about blending the rich tapestry of my life – my roots, my travels, the art that moves me, where one can take a bite of and go, ‘Damn, that’s good.’ “

Being crowned Asia’s Best Female Chef in 2017 was a surreal moment for May, bringing both pressure and an incredible opportunity to influence and inspire. Reflecting on this recognition the gourmand acknowledged that it made her more conscious of her role, beyond just in the kitchen – but in the community, in pushing for more diversity, and more creativity. This has been evident in her unwavering advocacy for various social issues like LGBTQ rights, diversity, and female empowerment.

Using my platform for good? It’s a no-brainer. Food’s about bringing people together, and if I can use my voice to champion equality, to stand up for what’s right, then I’m all in.”

May Chow

Navigating the culinary industry as a female chef comes with its unique set of challenges like gender bias, limited opportunities, and a lack of representation. However, May believes that the positives outweigh the negatives, and takes this as an opportunity to showcase her skills and unique perspective, break gender stereotypes, inspire young women, and foster diversity and inclusion. This, is what makes her culinary journey an extra rewarding and fulfilling one.

To aspiring women in the F&B industry, May’s advice is to focus on asking the right questions, conducting thorough research, making informed decisions, and prioritising a positive work culture. Delving beyond just aiming for positions at prestigious Michelin-starred restaurants, she suggest to seek environments with a strong track record of mentoring and promoting women, and those that champion equality and professional growth.

The Exciting Asia Tour

May’s 2024 Asia Tour promises excitement and collaboration. The tour is set to bring fresh and vibrant experiences to the table, celebrating differences and a shared love for exceptional food. Teasing her upcoming collaborations, May says to, “Expect fireworks. We’re mixing it up, bringing something fresh to the table. It’s about celebrating our differences, our shared love for great food, and just having a damn good time.” Catch May leaving her culinary imprint in cities like Seoul, Bangkok, Shanghai and Manila next!

“I want folks to leave feeling like they’ve been part of a story, a delicious narrative that maybe, just a bit, changes how they see food.”

From her recent stint in Singapore, May also highlights rising young female chefs to watch, like Chef Amarit Kaur from Revolver and Wan Ying, Joy and Hwei, the talented baristas at Maxi Coffee Bar, whose iced latte presented May with a ‘Wow’ moment. Nonetheless, May’s ultimate treat is her mom’s Shanghai spring rolls and pork chops.

May Chow’s culinary journey, her creativity, charming personality, and advocacy continue to make a significant impact in the gastronomic industry, showcasing the transformative power of food beyond the plate.

May concludes, “It’s about making the world a bit better, one dish, one conversation at a time.”

Keep up with May Chow here.

As talks resume between Singapore and Hong Kong on the travel bubble, it seems that we can start making travel plans sooner rather than later. But the questions begs: whereabouts in Hong Kong should you visit? From its electrifying city life, to nature havens in close proximity, the options are dazzling. Put your seatbelts, and virtual-reality (VR) goggles on, as Hong Kong Tourism Board’s (HKTB) “360 Hong Kong Moments” bring the sights and sounds to the comfort of your room.

Explore the Great Outdoors

With nature sprawling across 75% of Hong Kong’s landmass, it is much more a nature jungle than a concrete one. This 360-degree video takes you through jaw-dropping sceneries and nature trails in a city mostly known for its booming metropolis. With the option of viewing in 4320p (8K), you could almost smell the fresh spring air as you zoom from places like the iconic Lion Rock to Green Egg Island and Tai O. Even better, all of these spots are a stone’s throw from the urban hustle – providing much-needed breathing space for the city-dweller.

But of course, if you ever want to throw yourself back into the concrete jungle, the next few videos will remind you of the lively Hong Kong we know and love. Think night markets, cha chaan tengs, and bright billboards. It isn’t labelled “Asia’s World City” for no reason.

Fall in Love with the Urban Jungle

Zoom out from the iconic Monster Building into a breathtaking bird’s eye view of Quarry Bay with this video. Formerly a residential and industrial area, its skyline has since been populated with skyscrapers over the past two decades. Picturesquely located beneath Mount Parker, this video of Quarry Bay aptly depicts the ubiquity of commercial buildings and nature that make up Hong Kong’s landscape. For Hong Kong’s reputation as a concrete jungle, this VR experience will surely make you fall in love with its beauty.

See Downtown Hong Kong from the Ding Ding

Affectionately nicknamed ding ding by locals — after the bell ring used to notify passengers of its approach — this tram has become synonymous with Hong Kong’s bustling city life. There’s no need for a tour bus, when this tram takes you up close and personal with the city. Your Hong Kong experience cannot be complete without this tram ride, and the video will take you right into the heart of Hong Kong aboard the unique mode of transportation we know and love.

Thrilling Nights

Dive into the kaleidoscopic night scene of Hong Kong that comes to life as the sun goes down. Bursting with energy, feel the life of the SAR course through your screen as you zoom through the city centre, all the way to City Hall Carpark as their famed neon lights come alive in quasi-reality. Imagine enjoying a cocktail, or busting out a few killer moves on the dancefloor, as the night turns into morning.

Victoria Harbour: Hong Kong’s Most Famous Attraction

Taste the salty air as the azure waters of Victoria Harbour greet you at the edge of a breakwater. Catch a glimpse of Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter in the 360 as well! The largest harbour in Asia and one of the busiest in the world, it’s rare to have such an unobstructed panoramic view of the harbour and skyline beyond. When the harbour is in full swing, everything from small wooden vessels to Hong Kong’s iconic Star Ferries travel through day and night. It probably doesn’t get more serene than in this video.

Your virtual exploration of the Fragrant Harbour need not stop here. Head to Discover Hong Kong to embark on more virtual tours of various landmarks around the city. It’s never too early to start planning your itinerary!
