Imagine sharing a cosy blanket at this honeymoon spot while catching the first light of day! Pedal or drive around the island and lose yourselves in its rich natural beauty. Freshen up in the crystal clear waters and explore the stalactites of Pethoen Cave, but don’t miss Aquarium Naturelle, the natural aquarium hidden amidst the lush forest. Delve into the legend of the Warrior’s Leap, a cliff soaring 30 metres above the ocean.

Exploring the Loyalty Islands

Ouvéa, The UNESCO-Listed Paradise

Ouvea-© Valentin Coutaz NCT(2)

This slender strip of land, only 40 metres wide in some places, stands out as “the island closest to paradise”, a title bestowed by Japanese writer Katsura Morimura. With the long stretch of white sandy beach and sparkling emerald waters at Mouli Beach, it is easy to see how Ouvéa is indeed one of the most beautiful atolls in the world. Catch the best sunset views at Mouli Beach and venture under the Mouli Bridge to encounter sea creatures like rays and turtles.

For more exciting encounters, walk from St. Joseph to the shark pass at Grand Nord Beach, where you’ll meet lemon sharks returning for mating season. Don’t miss seeing one of the most endangered species of the Pacific, the Ouvéa parakeet. Native to the island, they’re typically spotted around the Beauvoisin Lodge and in the commune of Gossanah.

The mystical Blue Hole of Hanawa is a natural cavity filled with seawater from cracks in the coral reef. The thin layer of freshwater resting upon the sea gives off an ethereal blue shimmer, making this place almost magical. Before you give in to the temptation to take a plunge like the locals do, know that it’s not as easy to get out – and researchers haven’t found the bottom of this hole either.

Book your domestic flight to Ouvéa here.

Lifou, The Island of Many Faces

Lifou- Many faces

Home to 37 tribes, Lifou is the largest and the most populous of the Loyalty Islands, boasting an eclectic mix of culture, heritage and cuisine. Get an insight into island life here at the capital, Wé, with bustling markets on Wednesdays and Fridays. Savour local cuisine made with the freshest indigenous ingredients.

Besides lounging on immaculate beaches like Luengöni Beach or Easo Beach, explore the steep coral cliffs of Jokin or navigate to the Luengoni Caves with mysterious sinkholes. A short walk from Easo Beach will take you to Our Lady of Lourdes, where you’ll be rewarded with a splendid view of Santal Bay. Adventurous folks can head north and hike to the Devil’s Cave, complete with underground water abysses, hanging tree roots, and limestone formations that set it up perfectly as a devil’s lair.

Complete your Lifou experience with a visit to the Vanilla Plantation, where you’ll discover everything about vanilla at the “House of Vanilla”. Learn the secrets of its production and how it came to be; this is where you can also shop for fresh vanilla pods and other vanilla products. Visiting in October? Be sure to join in the fun at the Vanilla Festival in celebration of all things vanilla.

Book your domestic flight to Lifou here.

Maré, The Highest Island in New Caledonia

Mare island hopping

Love watching the sun rise? The easternmost island, Maré is the first among the Loyalty Islands to welcome the sun’s golden rays. Start the day with local delicacies at the Tadine Market and immerse in rich Kanak art and culture at theYeiwéné Yeiwéné Cultural Center.

Between basking in the tranquillity of Wabao Beach and Kurine Beach, appreciate marine wonders at Maré’s Aquarium Naturelle, a natural aquarium nestled amidst lush vegetation. While swimming and snorkelling are prohibited due to rocky terrain, you can certainly indulge in the traditional Kanak dish of fish and vegetables cooked in banana leaves, Fish Bougna, instead. Or have a go at the Coconut Crab; its sweet and creamy texture might surprise you.

Soaring 30 metres above the ocean is a cliff steeped in local legend. Named the Warrior’s Leap, it is said to be an escape route for valiant warriors. Then, take your exploration into the Pethoen Cave thereafter and join the locals with a dip in the freshwater lake. With the magnificent stalactites hanging overhead, it’s a swimming experience like no other. If you visit in May, take the chance to stock up on avocado and partake in the festivities of the avocado festival at the Tribe of Nece.

Book your domestic flight to Maré here.

The Divine Isle of Pines

Ile des Pins-© @ayance__ NCT(2)

Standing as the crown jewel of New Caledonia, the Isle of Pines proudly bears the moniker “Pearl of the Pacific” with its spectacular turquoise bays and white-sandy beaches, making it one of the must-visits places in the archipelago.

Dive into the natural beauty of the twin bays of Kuto and Kanumera. Separated by a narrow peninsula with coral reefs lining the shorelines, this is a popular local spot for swimming and snorkelling. Spot a fascinating array of marine life and take in the golden sunsets by the waterfront. From Kuto Bay, it’s an easy hike to the top of N’Ga Peak (262 metres) for a panoramic view of the island.

Dip in the “natural swimming pool” of Oro Bay, which draws visitors near and far to witness the natural formation formed by a coral reef wall. A small path from here will lead you to Upi Bay, where you can explore the shallow waters adorned with coral rocks.

To get your daily dose of history and culture, visit the mysterious Queen Hortense Cave and take a trip to the village of Vao. Check out the beautiful Mission Church and Statue de St. Maurice to learn more about the first missionaries that arrived on the island.

With each of the four islands offering a different slice of paradise, New Caledonia offers a rich tapestry of diverse experiences. And with direct flights from Singapore via Aircalin, paradise is only under nine hours away. Book your flights to New Caledonia here.

Aircalin

With lots of awe-spiring destinations waiting to be explored – Experience the magic of the idyllic New Caledonia with Aircalin, offering the comforts of a full-service airline and the warm welcome of the Pacific. Plan your trip here.

A Panoramic Escape at Mount-Dore

Mount-Dore

The Great South is a hiker’s paradise, and one place you simply cannot miss are the scenic hiking trails that cross through Mount-Dore. Lace up your hiking boots and explore the 800-metre-high summit (about four hours to-and-fro) for panoramic views that stretch beyond the horizon, capturing both the azure coastline and the lush inland forests. Climb at dawn for that picture-perfect Instagram moment, or reach the top just before the sunset to see the city lights of Nouméa flicker to life. If you’re a fan of flora and fauna, this natural wonder sees vibrant native species that’ll cross your path on the way to the summit.

The Tranquil Isle of Ouen

Isle of Ouen

Part of the Mont-Dore municipality, the Isle of Ouen is perched south of the Woodin Canal, about half-way between Nouméa and Île des Pins. First discovered by a sandalwood tradesman in the 19th century, the island is home to a population of one hundred people, mainly from the Ouara tribe. In this tranquil haven, the pace of life is slow – allowing you to unwind on unspoiled beaches and dipping your toes into the turquoise waters of the Pacific. You might also catch the sight of some turtles or spot humpback whales by yacht or motor boat. Beyond exploring the island with local guides, participate in traditional activities like fishing at low tide, as well as weaving workshops and more.

Bird’s Eye View of The Whales at Cap N’Dua

Cap N'Dua

The cliffside views at Cap N’Dua are out of this world. Found on the tip of the Grand Sud, the biodiverse rich spot is strategically situated between land and sea. Encompassing 830 hectares, it now thrives as an independent natural reserve, presenting visitors with diverse landscapes like captivating bays, dramatic cliffs, and extensive arid scrubland that are accessible via hiking paths and bike trails. Augmenting its allure for nature enthusiasts, it offers a prime vantage point to witness the annual migration of humpback whales to the New Caledonian waters for mating season between July and late September.

Kayak Through A Drowned Forest at Blue River Park

Blue River Park

Just an hour’s drive away from the capital city of Nouméa, the Blue River Park (Parc de la Rivière Bleue) is an absolute paradise. Amongst its 9,000 hectares worth of kaleidoscopic wonders are lush forests where rare plant species bloom and a vibrant wildlife sanctuary including the cagou bird. As you journey through the reserve on the likes of trails, bikes and kayaks, check out the eerie spectacle of bleached logs in the Drowned Forest. Other pit stops worth making include the former mining camp, Palmetum, the High Blue River’s waterfalls and the Maison du Parc. Nonetheless, the highlight here is the river itself, with a mesmerising blue hue and crystalline waters.

The Majestic Isle of Pines

Isle of Pines

Dubbed the ‘Jewel of the Pacific,’ Isle of Pines is located southwest of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. As if plucked straight from a postcard, the island is an ethereal beauty with white shores, turquoise lagoons for snorkelling, and soaring Araucaria pine trees. Don’t miss the Oro natural pool, an enclosed lagoon encircled by pines and coral reefs and relaxing at Kanumera and Kuto Bay. History buffs would enjoy a hike to the Queen Hortense’s Cave, named after a local royal that allegedly hid in the caves for several months during an intertribal conflict. Savour the famed local snails known as “bulimes” or “Escargots de l’Ile des Pins” for a holistic experience! For hassle-free and direct flights from Noumea to isle of Pines, opt for Aircalin, the preferred choice of both local and tourists alike.

Explore Ancient Living Relics at La Madeleine Waterfall

La Madeleine Waterfall

Near the Blue River Provincial Park lies Plaine des Lacs and the enchanting La Madeleine Waterfall. The charming setting that makes for a leisurely stroll encompasses two kilometres of the New Caledonian Maquis shrubland, home to 168 plant species with an impressive 95% being exclusive to the region. This includes species of primitive conifers originating between 245 and 65 million years ago, as well as the Nesogalaxias fishes, a remarkably thriving fossil from Gondwana, the supercontinent that emerged roughly 600 million years ago. Between the cascading water, the stunning flora and the melodies of native birds, the experience is definitely an invigorating one.

Explore the Rustic Charms of Prony Village

Prony Village

Travellers with a yen for cultural and heritage sites can head to the Prony village. Now abandoned, the once thriving town has meticulously been restored by enthusiasts at the Association du Village de Prony. Showcasing three historical eras in the nation’s history – the penal colony, the wood industry, and the early mining days – some relics still found on grounds include what used to be Camp Sébert and its gunpowder store, the sled used for transporting wood and the officers’ barracks. An escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, the remains of Prony village are now recognised as historic monuments by the Southern Province, and guided visits make for the perfect opportunity to delve into its intriguing history.

The Secluded Oasis Called Casy Islet

Casy Islet

A little further out from Prony Bay, accessible by taxi-boat, Casy Islet offers a beautiful natural setting for a weekend expedition. A hub of New Caledonia’s biodiversity, the islet boasts over 80% of native plants, including exquisite orchid species. Composed mainly of peridotites – a geological material linked to the region’s substantial nickel resources – Casy Islet is splendid for leisurely strolls. The secluded oasis makes for any snorkeler’s dream, featuring turquoise waters and vibrant coral gardens, as well as unspoiled beaches to relax on.

Serene Green Tourism at Yaté Dam & Lake

Yaté Dam & Lake

Dedicated to green tourism, the Yaté Dam and its vast reservoir is renowned for its expansive landscapes, pristine surrounding wilderness, and distinctive red soil. At an elevation of 160 metres above sea level, the dam overlooks the Yaté Lake and serves as a 68 MW power station, contributing around 20 to 30% of the total electricity consumption in New Caledonia. For folks with a passion for sports, the dam also marks the starting point of the annual “Gigawatt” race, an iconic event featuring 10km to 30km races. For picturesque memories, cross the dam towards Yaté and keep a lookout for a sign post leading you to a prime vantage point to capture a stunning shot of the idyllic lake. For folks interested in eco-conscious travel, Aircalin offers an innovative fleet and reduced environmental footprint too, find out more here

Family Picnics & Bike Riding at Netcha Trails

Netcha Trails

Known for their stunning viewpoints, Les Boucles de Netcha or the Netcha Trails are a network of trails that wind through captivating landscapes. Whether you’re on foot or a mountain bike, the 150km trails cater to everyone with nine varying routes and distinct difficulty levels for a thrilling journey. Families looking for a relaxed expedition can opt for the two green routes (Creek Run and Pines Run), whilst those seeking adrenaline rush can go for the two black routes (the Carénage River run, and the extensive Plain of Lakes run) reserved for experienced mountain bikers. Pack your bags and hop onto Aircalin for direct passage to the hidden island paradise – New Caledonia! The stunning French archipelago in the heart of the South Pacific boasts lush nature reserves, vibrant festivals, and a rich cultural heritage. If nature, culture and adventure are calling out for your next vacation, follow our five-day itinerary to immerse yourself in all the wonders this tropical gem has to offer.

Getting To and Around New Caledonia

Aircalin

Your tropical escapade is less than nine hours away from Singapore via New Caledonia’s flag carrier Aircalin. Flying five times a week directly to the La Tontouta International Airport, enjoy the warm hospitality of the Pacific the moment you step on board. Plan your trip with our itinerary and book your flights here.

Moke by the beach New Caledonia

The best way to explore New Caledonia at your own pace is to rent a car. International car rental companies have offices at the airport, so book ahead and collect your car there or hire one on the spot. You might even decide to travel in style in cute Moke electric cars while enjoying the tropical breeze in your hair.

For getting around the islands, atolls and the world’s largest lagoon, water taxis are at your disposal. There are even glass- bottomed boats that bring you closer to the extraordinary marine life and boats that’ll take you out to witness the majestic humpback whales migrating to the warm waters of New Caledonia.

Day 1: Immerse in Local Culture

Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center 2
Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center

Start your French-flavoured culture adventure at New Caledonia’s largest market, Port Moselle Market, where locals go for fresh produce. Open Tuesdays to Sundays from 5am to 11.30am, browse tropical fruits and local seafood while hunting down artisanal crafts and souvenirs. Fuel up at any one of the cafes nearby before heading to Place des Cocotiers. Also known as Coconut Tree Square, this central garden is home to many festivals, events, and markets. Catch sight of the monumental Celestial Fountain, also the “zero” reference point from which road mileage was measured.

In the afternoon, check out the architectural wonder that is Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Center, which spotlights indigenous Kanak culture through guided tours, exhibitions, and workshops. Marvel at the remarkable Cathedral of Saint Joseph, a historical monument built and designed by prisoners in 1887. Discover how France’s first metal lighthouse found its way to New Caledonia at Phare Amédée, before ending the day at the scenic Baie des Citrons, where you can kick back with dinner and drinks at the convivial bars and restaurants along the waterfront.

Day 2: Hike The Great South Region

Les Boucles de Netcha
Cycling at Les Boucles de Netcha

With New Caledonia’s rich biodiversity, take your time to explore the natural beauty of this French Archipelago. Travel south to Grand Terre and wander through Blue River Park, the largest rainforest on the island. The 9,000-ha protected park is home to endemic flora and fauna species such as the 1,000-year-old great Kaori tree and the flightless bird, Kagu. Then, visit the massive Yate Dam, which generates hydroelectricity that powers up to 30% of New Caledonia before taking your hike to Les Boucles de Netcha. With nine circuits of varying difficulties, challenge yourself with the black circuits or opt for the leisurely route with the green runs. Slow down in the second half of the day on the botanical path to the La Madeleine waterfalls.

Day 3: Escape to the Jewel of the Pacific

Isle of pines
Isle of pines

Just 20 minutes away by plane from Nouméa (or two and a half hours by ferry) lies the dazzling “Jewel of the Pacific”. The Isle of Pines will take your breath away with its powdery ivory coast, turquoise lagoons, and towering Araucaria pine trees. Take a dip in the stunning Kanumera Bay or say hello to the colourful aquatic life in the natural aquarium at Oro Bay.

Delve into the history of the Isle of Pines with a short stroll through the rainforest leading to Queen Hortense Cave. Legend has it that the regal lady sought refuge there during a tribal dispute in the mid 1850s. Connect with the friendly locals at the Village of Vao and learn more about the history of the jewel at the Mission Church and Statue de St Maurice. Round up the day by pampering yourself at the Oure Tera Beach Resort; feast on local and Western cuisine against the scenic view of Kanuméra beach at sunset.

Day 4: Heart-Pumping Activities on the West Coast

Horseback riding in New Caledonia

Get your adrenaline pumping with the slew of exciting activities on the West Coast. Known for its strawberries and the traditional ox festival, Paita offers a unique way to experience the rainforest – by zipline. Zip through the canopy of Paita Forest and see lush greenery with a different perspective.

For more thrills, leap off a plane and soar over the unspoiled landscape of Bourail, in the company of an experienced sky-diving instructor. Ease the excitement with a walk on the soft, white sands of Poé Beach, or take a dip in its sparkling, shallow waters. Tip your hat to the “gentleman” of the Bonhomme rock formation at Baie des Tortues (Turtle Bay) and you might even score a precious sighting of turtles nesting. If water sports are your thing, find them at La Roche Percée – its gentle waves are kind to new surfers. But don’t miss cultural treasures on land, such as the old military post office, and the Bourail Museum

Experienced surfers looking to ride the waves, the Pass of Dumbéa will be your dose of excitement. For a slower-paced activity, saddle up and explore Dumbéa on horseback. Journey into the forests, the highest point at Couvelée Valley, and along the Dumbéa River for breathtaking views of the upstream gorges.

Day 5: Island Hop to the Loyalty Islands

Lifou
Lifou, New Caledonia

Complete your New Caledonia adventure off the beaten track with a visit to Lifou, Maré and Ouvéa. Boasting unparalleled beauty and steeped in legends and traditions, the Loyalty Islands sit east of Grand Terre. Lifou, the largest island, is home to culinary gold – vanilla. Experience all things vanilla, from plantation visits and the “House of Vanilla” to an annual festival celebrating vanilla. Join a guided tour to meet locals, sample local food and discover what makes them remain on Lifou for generations.

Head to the warm white sands of Luengoni Beach. The mysterious Luengoni Caves are natural caves hidden amongst lush vegetation, with fascinating turquoise to cobalt hues in its water. Catch a glimpse of the “jewels”, which are land sinkholes – you’ll need to jump two metres into total darkness under the guidance of an experienced guide.

Sitting in the heart of the South Pacific, New Caledonia has abundant natural wonders and stunning landscapes waiting to be explored. But there’s more to this underrated archipelago than its pristine beaches. From its rich culture to unique experiences and activities, here are 10 reasons this island paradise should be on your travel bucket list.

A French-Flavoured Getaway

Ile des Pins

Lying east of Australia and north of New Zealand, the idyllic archipelago was first sighted by explorer James Cook in the late 1700s. Established and populated by the French in 1853, New Caledonia became an overseas territory after World War II, its inhabitants holding French citizenship regardless of ethnicity. What this means today, is that the island offers a unique blend of savoir-vivre (to live well and elegantly) and laid-back Pacific vibes. Think fine wine and dining, fresh produce markets, and local Melanesian culture against the backdrop of palm-lined beaches.

The Land of Eternal Spring

Domaine De Deva

This little piece of France enjoys an average temperature of 24°C. November to March are its warmest months, with temperatures reaching a high of 36°C. During its coolest months, from July to September, temperatures can drop to a cool 17°C. With its all-year-round subtropical climate, you can comfortably enjoy the great outdoors in the Land of Eternal Spring.

Direct Flights With Aircalin

Aircalin

This one-of-a-kind getaway is less than nine hours away from Singapore with Aircalin. With six weekly direct flights to La Tontouta International Airport, Nouméa, it makes for easy planning while you get to enjoy all the amenities of a full-service airline, coupled with the warm welcome of the Pacific. After all, Aircalin means “air cuddle” in English. With your comfort as their priority, sit back and relax into its “cuddle” as you make your way to the island paradise.

And when you book your flights from 10 – 24 May 2023, you get to fly via Aircalin at only S$998, including return airfare from Singapore plus all the taxes! It’s valid for travels between 10 May 2023 and 31 Mar 2024, giving you enough time to plan your trip.

Get in Touch with Nature

Ouaième

With picturesque beaches, marine conservation areas, verdant reserves and parks, New Caledonia is home to over 3,000 native species, most of which are unique to the territory. Nature lovers will delight in the rich biodiversity of New Caledonia. Keep your eyes peeled for interesting finds like a “natural aquarium” formed in a rock pool on Maré Island or the symbolic “screaming” Kagu

Go Island Hopping

Ouvea Island

With three unspoiled gems steeped in nature’s beauty and tradition, you’ll find the Loyalty Islands – Lifou, Maré, and Ouvéa – off the coast of New Caledonia, with each telling its own story. Appreciate the hidden gem- Kiki Beach on Lifou, visit Maré island’s limestone caves and take a hike along scenic cliffs at Ouvéa island. Accessible by flight or boat, these islands and their pristine beaches will leave you enchanted.

Immerse in the Local Indigenous Culture

Local Kanak Culture

The rich and colourful Kanak culture is integral to New Caledonia’s unique identity. They are the largest cultural group in the archipelago and one of the earliest inhabitants. Many of their traditions are still preserved on The Loyalty Islands, and much of their culture is celebrated through music, art, and food. The Kanaks have close ties with the land and sea, and you can fully experience this as you feast on the iconic Bougna (banana, meat, and vegetable stew), go fishing the traditional way, or tour the yam plantations in a tribal homestay.

Adventure Time

Far West Ranch Bourail West Coast

Take your adventures from the skies to the sea. No matter what your appetite for adventure is, there’s much to explore in New Caledonia. Drive around in a Moke car, hike or bike through the GR1 Trail at the Great South, and race to the peak of Mont-Dore! Explore the verdant landscape on the back of a horse, or spread your wings and glide over the pristine waters in an autogyro or an ultralight aircraft. The options for that adrenaline rush are aplenty.

Unique Food and Fresh Produce

Seafood Meal in Noumea

With New Caledonia’s vibrant culinary scene, you can wine and dine at fine French restaurants or graze your days away at local markets like Port Moselle Market to sample fresh produce, charcuterie, and cheese. Enjoy French food with a Caledonian twist, or savour a traditional Kanak meal. The best way to discover local flavours and fresh produce though, is Tables d’hotes, a farm-to-table home-cooked meal experience in the home of local farmers.

Visit Six Unesco Sites at One Go

Ilot Brosse

The Entrecasteaux Reefs, Great Northern Lagoon, Northeast Coastal Region, the Ouvéa and Beautemps-Beaupré atolls, the Western Coastal Region and the Great Southern Lagoon are the six marine UNESCO sites that represent the abundance and beauty of New Caledonia. Home to an amazing diversity of corals, fishes, and seagrasses, they make up one of the largest reef systems in the world. With its healthy and complete ecosystem, endangered marine species like turtles, whales, and dugongs flourish happily here. Special care is taken to preserve and protect these marine clusters, so be sure to do your part when you visit.

Show Your Love

Heart of Voh

Stealing the scene right out of K-Drama “Boys Over Flowers”, fly your loved one to the top of the world and show them your love with the Heart of Voh (and no, you don’t have to be as rich as Gu Jun-Pyo). This famous heart is a 4-hectare natural clearing formed by the mangroves on the lagoon’s edge. Because the area around the mangrove has little vegetation, it creates the outline of the perfect heart shape. Alternatively, a three-hour hike to the top of Katepai Mountain will reward you with a full view of the Heart of Voh.

From 10 May to 24 May 2023, book your direct flights to New Caledonia via Aircalin at only S$998 (return air fare from Singapore, all taxes included). For travels from 10 May 2023 to 31 March 2024.
