In a city that thrives on contrast and charisma, a new address is quietly redefining what a members club in Bangkok can be. Poised atop the striking new JLK Tower in Sukhumvit, The Consul Bangkok isn’t just a new venue, it’s a vision. Opening this December, this private social club promises to become the capital’s most compelling cultural nexus, where connection, creativity, and conversation come first.

Part private club, part artistic salon, and part culinary destination, The Consul Bangkok draws inspiration from the city’s history as a meeting point of ideas. But rather than emulate the gilded exclusivity of traditional members-only enclaves, it proposes something more grounded: depth of experience, thoughtful curation, and a regional perspective that feels genuinely of-the-moment.

Designed in collaboration with Team Wang Design under the creative direction of Jackson Wang, the club unfolds across two top floors with sweeping skyline views. Inside, members move between a refined Chinese restaurant led by Chef Benson Feng, a stylish supper club with live performances, and the headline attraction – Bar Won, the signature bar concept by the team behind Alice in Seoul, a mainstay on Asia’s 50 Best Bars. Known for its theatrical flair and precision mixology, Alice’s legacy informs Bar Won’s elevated yet playful approach, positioning it as one of the most anticipated openings on Bangkok’s bar scene.

Bar Won, perched like a crown above the dining space, isn’t merely about drinks. Its name, derived from the word “one” and symbolic of harmony and origin, sets the tone for a 12-drink signature menu that reinterprets global art through Thai ingredients. Each creation is an ode to form and balance, while the classics are quietly perfect: no gimmicks, just craftsmanship.

As night falls, the elegant dining room morphs into a supper club infused with live music and ambient energy. The Consul’s approach to hospitality is atmospheric, but never overproduced. It’s Bangkok’s social rhythms, refracted through a new lens.

But there’s more. For those craving intimacy, The Consul Bangkok offers members-only spaces including private dining rooms, a cigar lounge, and an investors’ salon, all designed for elevated dialogue and discretion. And then, there’s the world-exclusive Yang Club by Team Wang Design, helmed by Jackson Wang. Blending lifestyle, sound, and creative experimentation, Yang Club is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about members-only concepts in Asia.

It’s no surprise then that early-bird memberships to this members club in Bangkok have already sold out. A limited number of memberships will be released upon launch, an invitation to be part of something distinct in the evolving story of Bangkok social clubs.

In an age of overstimulation, The Consul Bangkok invites you to slow down, lean in, and truly connect. For those seeking access to one of the city’s most culturally attuned social clubs, membership inquiries can be directed to membership@theconsul.club.

In a city that never sleeps but often forgets, some places manage to leave a mark that’s hard to shake. After nearly a decade of shaping Bangkok’s modern identity through food, music, and late-night camaraderie, 72 Courtyard will officially close its doors on 31 October 2025.

Nestled in the heart of Thonglor, this open-air lifestyle complex has long been a cornerstone of the capital’s creative and culinary landscape. A place where ramen met rave, and where conversations stretched long past midnight. Much like the city’s best cocktail bars that blend craft and community, 72 Courtyard was built on connection, a gathering ground for chefs, DJs, artists, and the endlessly curious.

Since opening in 2015, the Courtyard has hosted an ever-evolving lineup of restaurants and bars that mirrored Bangkok’s appetite for reinvention. From the comforting umami bowls at Kenji’s Ramen Lab and the playful plates at Beer Belly, to the low-lit charm of Feral Wine Bar, each venue carved its own corner in Thonglor’s story.

Throughout October, expect the same spirit of generosity and mischief that made 72 Courtyard what it is. Participating venues are offering 30% discounts, special menus, and Halloween-themed collaborations, including kitchen takeovers by Bangkok favourites like Baan Lamyai, La Lupita Taqueria, and Oxbo. The final week (24–31 October) will be a curtain call filled with curated chaos: themed menus, parties, and one last all-in blowout.

BEAM: Bangkok’s Sonic Church Signs Off

And then there’s BEAM. More than just a club, it was a rite of passage. With its minimalist design, world-class sound system, and uncompromising programming, BEAM championed underground electronic music at a time when Bangkok sorely needed it. For many, it was a second home.

A packed dancefloor under red lighting at BEAM Bangkok in 72 Courtyard, capturing the city’s underground nightlife energy with DJs and clubgoers immersed in electronic music.

BEAM will host its final night on October 31, a double-headliner affair that promises to be unforgettable. Its younger sibling, BEAMCUBE, will continue through 29 November, featuring international names like Jamz Supernova and Suze Ijó, as well as local collectives such as Kade & Co, Boink, and Sugar Rush Thai Dance.

Importantly, this isn’t a funeral. It’s a transformation. “The message is clear: BEAM is not gone, it’s changing shape,” the team writes. The music, the energy, the culture, those parts don’t fade. They evolve.

A Space That Meant More

In a city chasing the next new thing, 72 Courtyard carved out something rare: consistency with edge. It was Bangkok at its most interesting. Cosmopolitan, collaborative, and a little wild around the edges. It reminded us that good nights aren’t about opulence, but about people. About connection.

A steaming bowl of Shoyu Tonkotsu ramen served at Kenji’s Ramen Lab in 72 Courtyard Bangkok, featuring chashu pork, soft-boiled egg, seaweed, and noodles on a wooden table.

So if you ever stumbled out of a BEAM set blinking into the humid 2am air, or discovered your new favourite wine under Feral’s moody lighting, or just came for the ramen and stayed for the vibe, this farewell is for you.

This October, Bangkok says goodbye. One last dance. One more drink. Ten years of memories.

See you in the courtyard, while it lasts.

Bangkok is never short on rooftops, but Pastel Bangkok feels like one of those places you stumble upon and can’t wait to tell your friends about. Tucked away on the 22nd floor, this Mediterranean-inspired spot has all the ingredients for a fun night out: sharing plates that burst with flavour, cocktails that lean playful, and a buzzing energy that carries well past dinner. Think lobster toast and Hamachi ceviche by candlelight, sparklers on bottles, and house beats rolling across the skyline.

Ambience and Service

The journey begins in an unassuming hotel lobby, but once the lift doors open, you’re transported somewhere far livelier. A neon signage and a Vespa greets you at the reception before you step into a rooftop terrace framed by bamboo, archways, and Mediterranean-style tiles. The interior is eclectic, blending a breezy Mediterranean vibe with Bali-inspired details. Mismatched but in a way that works, evoking both seaside glamour and tropical ease. It’s sun-drenched by day and sultry by night, clearly designed for both dining and dancing.

By evening, Pastel turns into a social playground: the music rises, sparklers light up, and a mix of tourists, expats, and locals fill the tables. The vibe is celebratory without tipping into chaos. The kind of place where you could just as easily lean back with a mocktail or rally friends for a big night out. Service is attentive and friendly, with small touches like logo-branded fans that show someone’s thought about the details.

Food and Drinks

Dinner starts on a cheerful note with a sparkling welcome drink. Cocktails here are fun rather than fussy. The Grand Istanbul, a gin-based refresher (THB 390) and the Virgin Strawberry Mojito (THB 280) are easy wins, while the cheekily named Sex on the Roof (THB 360) is all show but a bit too sweet.

Signature truffle toast at Pastel Bangkok rooftop restaurant, topped with shaved black truffles, pickled onions, herbs, and creamy spread for a Mediterranean flavour.
L-R: Lobster Toast, Truffle Toast. Photo: Tina Fung

Small plates are the real highlight. The Lobster Toast (THB 620/pc) is decadent and satisfying, though it comes at a premium. The Truffle Toast (THB 420/pc) strikes the right balance of earthy and light, but it was the Mediterranean Bruschetta (THB 390) that stole the show; juicy tomatoes and creamy cheese on crisp bread, a simple dish elevated. For something fresher, the Hamachi Ceviche (THB 590) with citrus and pomelo bursts, or the Melon & Iberico Salad (THB590), hit the spot and lighten the table.

Mains lean hearty. The Truffle Baby Chicken (THB 990) is large enough to share, with flavourful thighs offset by a drier breast. The Signature Rossini (THB 1,820), a tenderloin crowned with foie gras and truffle sauce, is pure indulgence. Served with a tableside flourish, it’s the kind of dish designed to impress, though ours was cooked a shade beyond the requested doneness.

Desserts deserve attention too. The tableside Tiramisu (THB 390) is playful and genuinely delicious, easily one of the best we’ve had in Bangkok. The Chocolate Mousse (THB 340) comes in a portion made for four: dense, rich, and a little overwhelming solo, but perfect for sharing at the end of the night.

Note: All prices are subject to 10% service charge and 7% VAT.

Verdict

Pastel Bangkok isn’t just another rooftop with a view; it’s a full-bodied experience where Mediterranean flavours meet Bangkok’s love for spectacle. The food is consistently fresh and crowd-pleasing, while the ambience transforms from relaxed sundown dining into a lively night out. Prices are a touch higher than average, but they’re justified by the setting and sense of occasion.

If you’re planning a birthday, gathering friends for a celebratory dinner, or simply in the mood for something festive, Pastel hits the sweet spot. Expect an evening that drifts easily from dinner into party mode; polished enough for a special occasion, yet relaxed enough to make a night here feel easygoing and unforced.

There’s something unmistakably otherworldly about arriving at So Sofitel Hua Hin. Tucked away in the quieter coastal village of Cha Am, about 40 minutes from downtown Hua Hin, this resort feels like a self-contained universe where design, gastronomy, and relaxation collide in delightful, and sometimes surreal, ways. From pyramid-like entrances to whimsical rabbit sculptures and unexpectedly serene spa pods, SO Sofitel Hua Hin isn’t just a place to stay, it’s a playful plunge into imaginative luxury. Here’s our full breakdown of what to expect.

Design & Stay: Alice in Wonderland Meets Contemporary Thai Chic

Upon arrival, guests ascend a dramatic stairway that resembles a stepped ziggurat, leading into a reception space that sets the tone for a resort themed around “Alice in Wonderland”, rabbits, regal figures, and surreal landscapes abound. But the whimsy is balanced by an elegant minimalism that carries through to the rooms and villas.

Our stay in the One-Bedroom Pool Villa, a sprawling 215 sqm sanctuary, was the epitome of private indulgence. Framed by tropical greenery and fronting its own pool, the villa offered airy interiors with floor-to-ceiling windows, separate air conditioning zones, a spacious living area, and thoughtful touches like bath salts, candles, and yoga mats. Without a kitchen, one might think it lacking, but with the resort’s strong dining options, it felt more like a blessing.

Beyond the villa, SO Sofitel Hua Hin offers a diverse range of accommodations to suit different types of travellers. There are a total of ten room categories, ranging from the stylish SO Comfy and SO Studio rooms to the expansive SO Pool Villa and the family-friendly SO Family suite with bunk beds for the little ones. Whether you’re a couple, a family with kids in tow, or travelling with pets, there’s a space thoughtfully crafted for your needs, including pet-friendly rooms and designated areas designed for furry companions to feel right at home.

Dining: Beach Society, White Oven & SO Sundae

Beach Society. Photo: Courtesy of So Sofitel Hua Hin

Dining at So Sofitel Hua Hin is both a global and local affair. Beach Society, located right by the beach, celebrates European coastal fare with a modern twist. The tuna tartare was elevated with a caper-studded panzanella and tomato salad, while the grass-fed tenderloin from New Zealand was grilled to perfection and served with bok choy and mashed potatoes. Sweet potato fries with herb aioli made for the perfect gluten-free starter, and the staff were exceptionally mindful of dietary restrictions throughout our stay. For those craving sea air and seared seafood, Beach Society is the resort’s breezy gastronomic gem, with an extensive menu that also includes pasta, wood-fired pizzas, and inventive cocktails.

a photo of the moo kra ta spread at white oven, so sofitel hua hin, thailand

White Oven, the resort’s Thai dining concept, is more grounded in local flavours. Breakfast here is a vibrant affair with everything from vitamin shots to tropical fruit and classic Western dishes. We returned for lunch and braved the seafood spaghetti, deliciously fresh but blisteringly spicy with local green peppercorns. The soft shell crab curry rice offered a more balanced, comforting heat. Our favourite dinner? The resort’s signature Moo Kra Ta. Set under the stars in the alfresco area, it’s a refined take on the Thai BBQ experience with premium meat, seafood, and sauces. All without leaving you smelling like the grill.

For something lighter and sweeter, SO Sundae is the perfect pit stop. Located poolside, this charming venue dishes out ice cream, milkshakes, and thirst-quenching refreshments; a welcome treat for both kids and adults after a sunny afternoon swim.

Amenities & Experiences: From Spa Rituals to Family Adventures

a photo of the interior of SO Spa at So Sofitel Hua Hin, Thailand
SO Spa. Photo: Courtesy of SO Sofitel Hua Hin

Wellness here is elevated at SO Spa, a sanctuary inspired by nature and Thai elegance. The spa’s architecture draws on organic forms, rounded walls, soft lighting, and natural wood accents evoke a serene cocoon-like retreat from the tropical heat.

Our couple’s treatment began with a refreshing welcome drink of butterfly pea tea and a salt-based foot scrub, leading into a blissful blend of Thai massage and oil therapy in a curved suite designed for deep relaxation. Therapists were attentive and tuned in, ensuring every stretch and stroke matched our comfort level. Afterward, we retreated into a dimly lit, igloo-shaped relaxation pod scattered with star-like lights overhead, ginger tea in hand, cocooned in stillness and ready for the world again.

The floating breakfast was a delightful surprise. Served as a morning experience in our private pool, it elevated the typical resort breakfast into something leisurely and luxurious. Elsewhere, the signature pool featured an inflatable obstacle course known as the Wibit Adventure Float, affirming So Sofitel Hua Hin’s reputation as a family-friendly destination.

a photo of the Wibit Signature Pool at So Sofitel Hua Hin, Thailand

One standout adventure was the visit to Nayang Bat Cave. A truly off-the-beaten-path experience that offers a glimpse into the wild rhythm of Hua Hin’s natural world. Just ten minutes from the resort, you’ll arrive at a humble private residence, where a two-storey terrace has been cleverly outfitted to serve as a sunset viewing deck. The mountain beyond is home to a bat colony of astonishing scale, millions of them stream out in swirling waves just after sundown. What makes this even more charming is the homegrown hospitality: a small convenience store run by the family stocks local snacks and chilled beers, which you can enjoy while waiting for the nocturnal spectacle to begin. With binoculars in hand and the golden hour unfolding, it’s nature’s version of a blockbuster. Intimate, humbling, and utterly unforgettable.

But the offerings don’t stop there. The resort is a haven for active travellers and families looking to stay engaged. Guests can explore the property’s scenic cycling tracks, challenge each other on the tennis, pickleball, or basketball courts, or putt their way through a whimsical 18-hole mini golf course. There’s also an indoor kids’ zone, and bicycles and scooters available for rent to explore the tranquil surroundings.

a photo of Nayang Bat Cave in Hua Hin, where at least 2 millions of bat fly out at sunset. Located 10 mins away from So Sofitel Hua Hin, Thailand

Final Thoughts

So Sofitel Hua Hin is a coastal dream wrapped in creativity. Perfect for couples, families, and pet-lovers seeking downtime with a twist, the resort manages to feel indulgent without being over the top. It’s a destination where Hua Hin’s sun-drenched charm is met with smart design, culinary excellence, and playful surprises. And with every playful rabbit sculpture or perfectly grilled prawn, you’ll be reminded that here, luxury is as much about imagination as it is about indulgence.

When the sun casts its golden hues over the Andaman Sea, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket rises lavishly behind me –  it’s hard to imagine this place as a once-abandoned tin mine. Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket isn’t just one of six world-class hotels at Laguna Phuket; it’s also the first to grace this revived land, sparking its transformation into Asia’s premier resort destination.

Dusit Thani may have started as the modest Princess Hotel in Bangkok in 1948, but today, it spans continents, bringing the essence of ‘Town in Heaven’—its name’s meaning—to destinations worldwide. And on the shores of Bang Tao Beach, the modern Thai luxury hospitality brand exudes an elegant coastal charm, shaded by native casuarinas and coconut palms, that fully immersed me in its grandeur.

Getting There

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket is just 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, easily accessible by Grab or a hotel-arranged transfer for added convenience. While traffic jams are not common in this area, it’s wise to allow an extra 15–20 minutes for possible slow-moving traffic in the early afternoon, when most flights to Phuket arrive.

A Part of Laguna Phuket

Laguna Phuket

From abandoned tin mine to Asia’s premier integrated destination, Laguna Phuket is a remarkable 1,000-acre oasis home to world-class resorts. Checking into any of the six resorts unlocks a world of dining, shopping, and wellness options nearby. Start the day with morning yoga at Laguna Park or tee off at the scenic 18-hole golf course, then fuel up with lunch at Canal Village before pampering yourself at the award-winning spas. Invest in health rejuvenation at the BDMS Wellness Clinic or soak in nature with gentle walks and tranquil boat rides around the sparkling lagoons.

The Rooms at Dusit Thai Laguna Phuket

Although some upgrades were underway during our stay, there was no impact from the noise or dust. In fact, the 245-room and villa resort remained the sanctuary of tranquility it was designed to be. Rooms here start at 32 sqm with oceanfront, sea, and lagoon views, while the spacious two-bedroom pool villas go up to 292 sqm. We loved the club rooms and suites on the ground floor, each with a private garden or terrace—perfect for soaking in the sea breeze or stargazing at night. For families or larger groups, the two-bedroom pool villa has a kitchen with all the necessary tools for light cooking and boasts a rooftop infinity pool!

Premier Oceanfront room

Our Premier Oceanfront room featured a private balcony with serene views of Casuarina trees and the beach. Grab a coffee and step outside in the morning to enjoy the gentle lapping of the waves—a tranquil start to the day. Inside, the 32 sqm room showcases a refined neo-colonial design with dark wood, marble furnishings, a plush queen bed, and a bathroom equipped with both a shower and bathtub

The Food and Amenities

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket Benjarong

The five-star resort is also home to the Michelin-recognized restaurant, Benjarong. Serving up Thai cuisine fit for royalty, Chef Boonram draws inspiration from Thai classic literature in his craft and honours traditional flavours with Thai herbs, fresh local ingredients, and authentic cooking techniques. Importance is placed on both flavours and presentation; expect flaming lobster dishes and live-action papaya salad made right on the spot. Even plain rice is served differently! The charming teak house restaurant is nestled in a garden and overlooks the lagoon, dining here is a treat for the senses. Cooking classes are available here, enquire for more information.

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket La Trattoria
Image Credit: Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket La Trattoria

The lively yet somewhat enclosed beach is a big draw for guests at Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket. It’s not private but offers enough privacy to just chill and relax. Just beyond the beach resort, rustic beach bars beckon with a small menu of classic cocktails. These rustic pop-up bars might make for great photo spots, but keep in mind they aren’t affiliated with the resort—so enjoy responsibly! Instead, order your drink from La Trattoria, the resort’s Italian beachfront restaurant for quality and taste assurance. This is where to feast on authentic Italian pastas and pizzas, alongside a selection of mains like the Pan Fried Duck Breast.

Beyond the beach, the family-friendly pool invites guests of all ages to slide in or relax by the poolside. Otherwise, take it slow and stroll around the lush resort or along the beach. For special occasions, reach out to the friendly staff and arrange an exclusive, intimate beach dinner for an unforgettable evening

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket is located at 390 Moo.1 Srisoontorn Road Cherngtalay Thalang District, Phuket 83110, Thailand, p.+66 76 362 999.

There’s good reasons why Angsana Laguna Phuket is known to beAn Island within an Island”. Phuket itself is the biggest island in Thailand that’s best known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and of course, delicious Thai food. Yet, Angsana Laguna Phuket, situated within Laguna Phuket, has managed to carve out a sanctuary that offers a blend of beach, dining options, and 101 activities tailored for the entire family, all in one destination – thoughtfully curated for a tropical getaway.

As part of Laguna Phuket, the 1,000-acre tropical paradise, Angsana Laguna Phuket is just 25 minutes from Phuket International Airport. Whether you travel by ride-sharing apps like Grab or book a transfer with the hotel, you’ll waste no time travelling to the five-star resort. While traffic jams are not a deterrent, you’ll want to buffer 15-20 extra minutes for slow-moving traffic in the early afternoon when most planes arrive.

Angsana Laguna Phuket is one of six world-class hotels situated in Laguna Phuket. Stepping into Asia’s premier integrated destination, you would not believe that these 1,000 acres of land were once an abandoned tin mine. The dry, arid lands are now home to resorts, residences, luxury spas, and an award-winning 18-hole golf course. Once-poisonous lakes have been revived into sparkling lagoons that serve as nesting grounds for local and migratory birds, with their tranquil waters offering scenic boat rides between properties. Best of all, you’ll have access to a 3 km-long stretch of beach facing the Andaman Sea. Although the beaches are not privately owned, you can still enjoy peace and quiet, unlike the popular, crowded public beaches. Being an all-in-one destination, staying at Angsana Phuket (or any of the resorts) lets you enjoy various dining, shopping, and wellness options within the area. You can go from golfing at Laguna Golf Phuket to morning yoga at Laguna Park, rejuvenate your health at the BDMS Wellness Clinic, or pick up the Art of Touch at the Banyan Spa and Wellbeing Academy.

Nestled along the sun-drenched shores of Bang Tao Bay, the 377-room resort offers thoughtfully designed spaces and amenities that cater to all – whether you choose to fill your holiday with fun and adventure, or want to soak in peace and relaxation. Rooms range from cosy 40 sqm accommodations with serene lagoon views or pool views to expansive 226 sqm two-bedroom suites, and even interconnected rooms for larger families. Love swimming? The Laguna Poolside Room lets you step out from your private patio and dive into the resort’s pool.

On the inside of our Laguna Premier Room, white and royal Thai-purple colours brighten the room, with Thai-inspired details on the wall and floor. A lattice divider separates the bed and the living area, which leads to the balcony overlooking the lagoon. Mornings were alive with the cheerful chirping of playful birds, making it the perfect time for Bird Watching from the kayak. Although we were not in direct view of the sunset, we did enjoy the dramatic orange and yellow hues painted across the skies at dusk. However, we did think that the mosaic-tiled bathtub was due for an upgrade.

The Amenities

XANA Beach Bar

Angsana Laguna Phuket offers amenities that transform a typical beach stay into a memorable experience. For one, they have one of the longest pools in Southeast Asia, spanning 323 meters long. It weaves through the entire resort, so you can literally float from the bar to the kids’ play section in a lazy pool style. Otherwise, the infinity pool at the XANA Beach Club offers laid-back seaside dining and stunning Andaman sunsets.

There’s no thrill like swimming alongside manta rays, exploring vibrant coral gardens, or uncovering hidden gems off the beaten path. With a treasure trove of stunning dive sites that cater to both seasoned divers and beginners, Asia has become a favourite among divers all over the world – All thanks to it’s warm tropical waters and the diverse marine life thriving in its reefs. So pack your gear, and get ready to explore these best diving spots in Asia.

Bunaken National Park, Indonesia

Renowned for its stunning biodiversity, Bunaken National Park is a diver’s paradise. Located in North Sulawesi, this marine reserve boasts clear waters teeming with life. The underwater haven is home to around 13 coral reef species and famous for its steep vertical walls that plunge 25-50 meters. Divers can also spot 91 types of fish species, including the rare Gusimi Horse Fish, Yellow-Tailed Lolosi, and Napoleon wrasses, as well as unique mollusks like the Giant Kima and the rare Nautilus. With around 20 dive spots around Bunaken and nearby Manado Tua, and the option to explore beautiful beaches and coastal trails, Bunaken is set to provide an unforgettable backdrop for underwater exploration.

Kerama Island, Okinawa, Japan

Tokashiki, Kerama Island, Okinawa, Japan

The Kerama Islands, with their distinct “Kerama blue” waters, form a stunning archipelago just west of Okinawa, ideal for beach lovers, hikers, and underwater adventurers. With over 20 islands in the chain, only four—Tokashiki, Zamami, Aka, and Geruma—are inhabited, while the rest remain beautifully untouched. The islands are part of the Keramashoto National Park, known for its vibrant reefs, pristine beaches, and diverse marine life, including colourful coral gardens and abundant sea turtles. The island’s gentle currents make it suitable for divers of all levels, and with many dive sites around the island, there’s plenty to explore. Moreover, Tokashiki, the largest island, offers top snorkelling spots at Aharen and Tokashiku beaches, where snorkellers often spot sea turtles up close.

Raja Ampat, Indonesia

raja ampat indonesia

Dubbed the “Crown Jewel of Indonesia,” Raja Ampat in West Papua is a diver’s utopia with the richest marine biodiversity on Earth. Its crystalline waters are home to over 600 species of coral and 1,500 species of fish, from graceful manta rays to elusive pygmy seahorses. Raja Ampat’s dive sites, such as Cape Kri and Blue Magic, offer exhilarating underwater adventures with vibrant coral gardens, schooling fish, and occasional shark sightings. Above water, the limestone karsts and emerald lagoons create a postcard-perfect backdrop. Whether you’re exploring underwater or kayaking through its serene waters, Raja Ampat is a bucket-list destination that leaves divers enchanted.

Koh Tao, Thailand

Koh Tao, Thailand

Koh Tao, known as “Turtle Island,” is a small paradise nestled in the Gulf of Thailand, 45 kilometres north of Koh Phangan. This island, a popular haven for scuba divers and beach lovers. With its shallow bays and calm waters, it’s an excellent place for beginners to learn the ropes of diving. The island has numerous dive schools and offers a range of courses, making it accessible to all. Beyond diving, visitors can take boat trips to explore the island’s stunning beaches and bays, hike to scenic viewpoints, enjoy the island’s vibrant nightlife, or unwind in hammocks with views of nearby Koh Nang Yuan—a breathtaking attraction of its own.

Tioman Island, Malaysia

Tioman Island, Malaysia

A tropical gem off Malaysia’s east coast, Tioman Island is a haven for divers and nature lovers, renowned for its crystal-clear waters and rich coral reefs within a protected marine park. Home to diverse marine species, including sea turtles, colourful reef fish, and blacktip reef sharks, dive spots like Coral Island and Renggis Island offer some of the most vibrant underwater experiences in Southeast Asia. On the other hand, Tioman’s dense rainforests, scenic trails, and waterfalls make it ideal for trekking, while its soft sandy beaches and peaceful vibe offer plenty of space to relax, making this island a perfect blend of adventure and tropical tranquillity.

Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores, Komodo National Park spans 29 volcanic islands, including the major islands of Rinca, Padar, and Komodo. Home to approximately 2,500 Komodo dragons, this UNESCO World Heritage site is equally impressive underwater. The park’s marine environment is one of the world’s richest, housing over 1,000 species of fish, 70 types of sponges, and a variety of large marine fauna including manta rays, dugongs, green turtles, sharks, and even migrating whales. With its nutrient-rich currents, this site supports around 100 dive spots that range from thrilling open-water current dives with manta ray and shark sightings to muck dives near shorelines where divers encounter rare invertebrates. That being said, this one is for more experienced diving operators as the strong currents here can pull divers into the Indian Ocean.

Anilao, Philippines

Anilao, Philippines

Located just a three-hour drive south of Manila, Anilao in Batangas province is a diver’s dream, particularly for underwater photographers. Known for its world-class muck diving, this area is famous for rare critters, vibrant reefs, and unexpected marine species that make each dive an adventure. Anilao’s unique blackwater diving allows night-time explorers to witness nocturnal creatures in action, while its healthy coral gardens offer ample opportunities for wide-angle shots of reefscapes. Skilled local dive guides, known for their uncanny ability to spot tiny and elusive critters, enhance the experience. Not to mention the eachfront resorts nestled against lush jungle backdrops offer an exotic setting combined with unbeatable Filipino hospitality.

Ambon Bay, Indonesia

Ambon Island may be small, but it offers a wealth of experiences for adventurous travellers, from diving to cultural exploration. Known as “Ambon Manise” or “sweet Ambon” for its beauty and friendly locals, the island is celebrated for its rich history. Ambon’s underwater scene is a paradise for muck diving enthusiasts, where rare species like frogfish thrive. The island’s lush mountains, tropical vegetation, and unspoiled beaches add even more to its charm, while the warmth of the local Ambonese people, many of whom have mixed European heritage, enhances the cultural experience.

Mention Phuket and visions of a sun-kissed beach escape immediately come to mind – where days are spent basking in the tropical sun by the Andaman Sea and nights are filled with the colours and vibrancy of Thailand’s renowned nightlife. And no matter where you wander, you’re never far from an authentic Thai meal. After all, you’re in the UNESCO City of Gastronomy. But that’s not all to this beach paradise. The next time you visit Phuket, venture beyond the beaches and follow our guide to Phuket Old Town for a cultural adventure at this underrated gem.

Just a 30-minute ride from Patong Beach and an hour from the airport, the Sino-Portuguese district is the best place to immerse yourself in Phuket’s rich history and heritage.

Guide to Phuket Old Town

Phuket Old Town spans nine streets, but the ones with the most things to see and do are concentrated around Thalang Road, Soi Romanee, Phang Nga Road, Dibuk Road, Krabi Road, and Ratsada Road. The charming enclave is perfect for leisurely exploration on foot, with a delightful mix of attractions, restaurants, and shops. You’ll want to snap photos of the vibrant street art or take a break at one of the many cafes. Not to mention, kick back with a relaxing Thai massage. Be sure to visit on a Sunday night when the streets come alive with the sights of local crafts, vintage finds, and the irresistible aroma of Thai street food. With so many things to discover, it’s worth staying a night or two.

Immerse in the History of Phuket

 thavorn museum

Phuket, though undeniably Thai, is a blend of cultural influences from the Phuket Sea Gypsies, Malays, Chinese Hokkiens, and Europeans – as reflected in the vibrantly-coloured shophouses of Phuket Old Town. Originally referred to as ‘Jung Ceylon’ or ‘Junk Ceylon’ by Western traders—a transliteration of its Malay name ‘Tanjung Salang’—Phuket derives its modern name from the Malay word ‘Bukit,’ meaning mountain.

 museum phuket

Learn more about Phuket and its transformation from tin mining into one of the most popular holiday destinations at the Museum Phuket (Admission is free). You’ll also get a glimpse into the lifestyle and culture of the Peranakannitats who lived in the city. Otherwise, the Phuket Thai Hua Museum (THB200 to enter), housed in a beautiful colonial-style mansion, will take you back in time showing you the way of life of the Chinese. For a quirky twist of history, explore Thavorn Phuket Museum (THB120 to enter) and its trove of real-life treasures and memories, with over 1,000 antiques. See everything from mining equipment to household items to an outdoor movie theatre truck, toys, and more.

Experience the Sunday Night Markets

Guide to Phuket old town

On Sunday nights, Phuket Old Town buzzes with activities as the streets fill up with hawkers, turning the peaceful streets into rows and rows of stalls with food, drinks and handcrafted treasures. Put on your walking shoes and dress light to explore the streets, and grab a seat to enjoy street performances by talented locals. There’s even an Indy Market with vintage clothes, local crafts and designs. Feast on all your favourite snacks and Thai food like Tom Yum Soup or Pad Thai, or go a little adventurous with the marinated raw seafood. But if that’s too much of a risk, their grilled seafood and meats are delicious too. And if you prefer familiar food, reach for the Crab Fried Rice or huge Dumplings which come in a wide variety of fillings. Wash them down with fresh fruit juices, Thai milk tea, or local beers, some of which are priced at less than THB100.

phuket old town things to buy

Shop souvenirs and local handcrafted items such as mini crystal lamps, ceramics, personalised glassware, as well as the famed Thai elephant pants and more. If all that walking and crowd is getting too much, find respite in the surrounding restaurants and cafes, or visit one of the oldest shrines in Phuket, the Sang Tham Shrine , also known as the ‘Shrine of the Serene Light’.

Tip! The night markets open at 6pm, so be there before sundown to beat the crowd.

Snap Snap and Away

Memory at On On Hotel

Amidst its charming historical backdrop, Phuket Old Town is brimming with hidden Instagrammable spots. Snap away on the streets against the colourful shophouses or in the museums of yesteryear.  Keep your eyes peeled for murals in the street alleys or head to one of the floral cafes, Korrakang Phuket or Aungku Phuket to immerse yourself in the sea of pink flowers. Another popular photo spot is The Memory at On On Hotel, which gained popularity after a scene in the 2000s film ‘The Beach’ with Leonardo DiCaprio. While the refurbished hotel is no longer that dingy-looking backpacker hostel in the movie, it still retains its Sino-Portuguese charm within the three-starred hotel. Think dark wooden furniture, long walkways, and intricate Peranakan-style furnishings. Don’t be surprised to see ‘students’ in rented school uniforms exploring every nook and cranny in pursuit of that perfect throwback shot.

Food Galore

Chair Cafe

With the streets lined with restaurants and cafes, it’s easy to find something for every palate at Phuket Old Town. Grab breakfast at cafes like Chair Cafe Old Town for healthy smoothies and avocado and eggs, or have dim sum-styled local delights at Kin Kon Krua. For a warm, comforting start to the day, reach for a bowl of O Cha Rot Beef Ball Noodle

Blue Elephant restaurant

Curb those hunger pangs with hearty home-cooked meals at China Inn Café & Garden Restaurant, a restored shophouse with a Feng-Shui-inspired backyard or at any one of the casual eateries that offer authentic Thai dishes. But if you are looking to splurge a little, head to the bib gourmand Tu Kab Khao Restaurant Phuket for their spiced curry crab and glass noodles. Or indulge in Royal Thai cuisine at the Blue Elephant Restaurant housed in an ancient Governor’s Mansion.

Phuket Old Town is also great for café-hopping. Besides the floral cafes, check out the hipster book cafe Bookhemian, which even has a mini cinema upstairs. The trendy MŌMUS Coffee serves up speciality coffee, light bites, and house-made cakes and Phuketique has some of the yummiest (and biggest ) french toast in town.

For nights out with friends, the Tantitium is your all-in-one spot with music, dinner and drinks, karaoke, and massage! But we like the artsy restaurant and bar Coolies Club for its sumptuous menu, delicious drinks and their Saturday night Chinoiserie Soirée. If it’s just drinks you are looking for, Dibuk House is a chill place to kick back with cocktails. Or turn up the night with live music and drinks at The Library Bar. For a dose of fun, visit the Harry Potter-themed Mad Hog Tavern Phuket for Butterbeers and pizzas.

Bonus!

Kim's Massage and Spa

Wind down with a relaxing Thai massage at Kim’s Massage and Spa. It’s a chain store with 12 outlets around Phuket, so you can rest easy in a clean and comfortable environment under the hands of well-trained massage therapists. We loved Kim’s 9 along Yaowarat Road for its spacious waiting area, plush chairs, and lush interior. It almost feels like having a massage in nature.

Your Cultural Escape Awaits

Phuket may be famed for its beaches and nightlife, but the magic of Phuket Old Town offers a refreshing change of pace that invites you to slow down and immerse yourself in its rich history, vibrant culture, and local flavours.
