Tucked away on Cambodia’s southern coast, Knai Bang Chatt is a rare gem where history, nature, and wellbeing converge. What began as a spontaneous dirt bike ride through Kep’s jungle back in 2003 evolved into one of Southeast Asia’s most unique retreats. Belgian entrepreneur Jef Moons stumbled upon three mid-century villas, remnants of Cambodia’s golden era, left behind during the country’s turbulent past. What followed was a labour of love: with a bag of crumpled US dollar bills, Moons purchased the land, eventually transforming it into a regenerative sanctuary.

Two decades later, Knai Bang Chatt has become a destination with soul that honours Cambodia’s architectural heritage while engaging meaningfully with local communities, and inviting travellers to reconnect with themselves and the world around them.

Understated Elegance: Architecture Rooted in History

Knai Bang Chatt’s 11-room compound is centred around restored 1950s villas that once belonged to Cambodia’s elite. Its brutalist-modernist geometry, a nod to Vann Molyvann’s New Khmer architecture, contrasts strikingly with the organic abundance of the resort’s lush gardens. The interiors are tastefully minimalist:  whitewashed walls, cool concrete, polished wood that allow the light and landscape to take centre stage.

It feels more like a friend’s secluded coastal home than a hotel. This intimacy and intentionality extend throughout the property, from the communal saltwater pool to the meditative spaces scattered across the grounds.

And with plans to introduce “Art for Kep”, an artist residency tied to future film and music festivals. It’s the resort’s commitment to cultural regeneration is more than just talk.

Wellness with Intention: A Regenerative Philosophy

The heart of Knai Bang Chatt’s evolution lies in its robust wellness philosophy. At the newly opened Kep West Wellness Centre, Wellness Manager Lana Yang brings over 20 years of experience across yoga, somatic therapy, sound healing, and energy work. Her integrative approach permeates the resort’s offerings, which range from group retreats to fully personalised journeys.

Retreats are a cornerstone here. In 2025 alone, Knai Bang Chatt is offering multiple themed programmes, each crafted to meet guests at the intersection of movement, rest, learning, and inner exploration:

  • Sail & Serenity (7–9 November 2025): This four-day programme harmonises energising morning yoga with sailing instruction and practice. Guided by Lana and Pheakdey.
  • New Beginnings: Art & Yoga Retreat (1–4 January 2026): Start the year with intention through mindful movement, artistic exploration, and deep rest in this 4-day journey led by Lolli and Lana.
  • Women’s Day Retreat (6–8 March 2026): A soulful weekend of meditation, yoga, chanting, and ecstatic dance designed to honour the feminine. Facilitated by Aimee and Lana.
  • Yoga & Spa Daycation (Flexible): For those short on time, this one-day retreat offers morning yoga, a vegetarian lunch, spa or sound therapy, and guided journaling – perfect for digital nomads, locals, or travellers passing through.
  • The Executive Leadership Chamber (Flexible): Designed for senior leaders and change-makers, this immersive retreat offers radical clarity, inner alignment, and regenerative leadership in Cambodia’s most sustainable luxury setting.
  • Wabi-Sabi Yoga Retreat: Embrace Your Truth (Flexible): A serene immersion into imperfection and self-compassion through yoga, breathwork, and meditation.
  • From Temples to Coast: Dual Destination Retreat (Flexible): A unique 7-day journey that begins at the Angkor Temples with Angkor Grace and ends at Knai Bang Chatt, combining Cambodia’s cultural richness with coastal regeneration. Guided by Lana and Shiva.

Each retreat is thoughtfully crafted and reflects the property’s regenerative ethos: relaxing, transformative and remembering what it feels like to be well, and part of something deeper.

Who It’s For: Soul-Seekers, Lovers, and Adventurers

Knai Bang Chatt is ideal for couples retreats, groups of friends craving meaningful time together, and even families with older kids or teens. And while the space might be a bit too serene for toddlers, young families will appreciate the two-bedroom villas, gentle beach access, and wellness-centric activities that blend play with presence.

Solo travellers will find the facilities to be a perfect setting for introspection. The resort’s intentionally slow rhythm fosters reflection, while its community-centred activities, ranging from sound therapy to guided nature walks, offer ways to connect without effort.

Activities That Go Beyond the Brochure

While wellness is central, the range of experiences at Knai Bang Chatt means you can do as much or as little as you like. Begin the day with a meditative walk through the sculpture garden, where retired sculptures will one day rest beneath the sea as part of an artificial reef. Ride a mountain bike into the surrounding jungle, or sail across open waters and return for a barefoot dinner beneath the stars.

Other highlights include:

  • Guided mangrove swamp tours tied to local conservation efforts.
  • Snorkelling excursions around nearby reefs.
  • Local cooking classes and Khmer cuisine workshops.
  • Private blessings with monks at nearby pagodas.

The spa provides treatments that draw from both Eastern and Western practices, including lymphatic drainage, intuitive massage, herbal compresses, and sound therapy. Each treatment is focused on relaxation, detoxification, and overall well-being.

Dining: From Farmers to Fine Plates

The on-site restaurant offers a refined yet grounded culinary approach. Menus change with the seasons and highlight local produce, with a focus on vegetarian and plant-based dishes that reflect the resort’s wellness philosophy. The selection includes Khmer specialties and contemporary European dishes, prepared with precision and attention to detail.

From fresh coconut ceviche to 250-gram tomahawk steaks, meals are designed to nourish and delight. For those joining wellness retreats, curated menus can be customised to align with detox protocols or specific dietary goals.

The public seafront bar adds a touch of sociability to the otherwise serene setting. It’s a favourite among visiting business travellers and regional guests who drop in for cocktails, conversation, and sunset views.

Getting There: The Road Less Travelled

Kep isn’t the most accessible destination, and perhaps that’s part of the appeal. Most travellers fly into Phnom Penh and continue with a road transfer that typically takes under two hours via National Road 3 – the smoothest and most direct route, often used by the resort’s own drivers. There are ferry and train options via Kampot and Sihanoukville, though they require more adventurous planning.

But for those who make the journey, the reward is a sense of arrival that extends beyond geography. Knai Bang Chatt isn’t a resort you pass through, it’s one you’ll want to revisit, ether in memory and maybe even in person.

Final Word: A New Model for Mindful Escape

Knai Bang Chatt is what happens when you build a resort around values, not vanity. It’s immersive, intentional, and quietly luxurious. Whether you’re seeking healing, inspiration, or just a few days of digital detox, this coastal sanctuary invites you to engage with the world differently.

In short, it’s returning to your body, to the earth, and to the parts of yourself that modern life often overlooks.

Workspace by Factory Phnom Penh

Industrial-style coworking area at Workspace by Factory Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s creative tech hub with art spaces and high-speed internet

Located in a re-purposed Levis factory, the phrase très industrial comes to mind here. Polished concrete and repurposed aircraft propeller ceiling fans are the order of the day. Positioned as a creative hub, the Factory offers private meeting rooms and Zoom/call booths, as well as some of the fastest internet in the city. Set on a more than three-hectare site, the “campus” features an art gallery, gym and even a skate park, as well as the Feel Good Coffee roastery, one of the best in the country.

With complimentary bicycles to navigate the art-filled alleys of the complex, there’s no excuse not to stretch your legs between projects.

Brown Coffee Vann Molyvann House

Interior of Brown Coffee Vann Molyvann House in Phnom Penh, a work-friendly café in a historic modernist villa designed by Vann Molyvann

While we are sometimes hesitant to recommend a chain store, we can make an exception for this franchise, and especially this location. Brown was established in 2009 by Khmer friends who returned from overseas with a dream of introducing coffee culture to the Kingdom. Their latest outlet sums up this spirit perfectly.

Built by Vann Molyvann – the “Father of New Khmer Architecture” – in 1966, the space combines the elements which made him a pioneer: Natural light and ventilation, equally melded to Cambodia’s climate and culture. Airy, stylishly appointed and home to some of the best western-style coffee and snacks, the former home is a major drawcard for anyone with an interest in modernist design. With the look of a cutting-edge 60s experimental film, why not put yourself in the picture?

Suzie Time Café

Interior of Suzie Time Café Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s first time-based café with unlimited drinks and coworking perks for digital nomads

The Kingdom’s first “time café”, Suzie Time offers an all exclusive digital nomad package, with an hour package available for just $3, or a full day for $6. Long-term deals are also available for those looking for a semi-permanent base of operations. The rate includes ice cold air conditioning, lightning fast internet, large tables and the use of a printer. More importantly, unlimited drinks are a part of the service, including the all important coffee. Set in an airy traditional shophouse, there are few places better to focus on what you need to focus on. With any number of fellow creatives frequenting the place, opening and closing times are a great opportunity to network.

The rest of the time, smalltalk is discouraged or headphones are encouraged. Great for serious grinders.

Endless Café

Quiet laptop-friendly café in Phnom Penh with cozy booths and relaxed atmosphere at Endless Café, open 24 hours for remote workers

One of the heavy-hitters of the digital working environment, thanks to its one-off status as the only 24-hour space in the city, Endless can be relied on for fast, reliable internet, plenty of power outlets and friendly local staff. It also has one of the most pleasant garden spaces. With a full range of barista coffees available, and even ramen noodles to make sure you have the energy to hit those late-night deadlines, this may be the perfect spot for anyone needing to regularly touch base with clients in a European time zone.

In addition, there are no extra charges for the wifi and air con, so campers can make themselves at home all night, if need be.

Hummus House

Bohemian-style rooftop at Hummus House café in Phnom Penh, ideal for freelancers looking for riverside views and Middle Eastern food

It doesn’t get any more central than this. Right on the Phnom Penh riverside. From streetside café tables, to air-conditioned quiet or the breezy rooftop Habibi Bar, with views of the Mekong, Hummus House offers four floors of options. The Lebanese restaurant is a Phnom Penh institution, first opening its doors more than a decade ago.

Warm pita bread fresh from the oven with the venue’s namesake Middle Eastern dip makes for a perfect snack, and plenty of power points make it the perfect central spot to hunker down and nail some work in the heart of the city.

Nutty Bakery

Interior of Nutty Bakery in Toul Tom Poung, Phnom Penh – a hidden café with artisan sandwiches and relaxed seating for freelancers

One of the most attractive spots on the list, Nutty Bakery is also home to some of the Kingdom’s best artisanal sandwiches. Of course, a full range of breakfast dishes and coffees are available, but the pick of the bunch has to be the incredible gourmet deli-style sandwiches. One of the handmade loaves on offer even features cricket flour, for added, ecologically sound protein.

The cool upstairs space features comfortable retro furniture, and it remains a hidden gem in the fashionable Toul Tom Poung neighbourhood – that’s Russian Market to expats. Sokny, the owner and head baker, makes sure the music is discreet, the air-conditioning is cool, and there is no time limit on table-time.

The Lighthouse

Outdoor seating at The Lighthouse Café in Chroy Changvar, Phnom Penh, a peaceful retreat for writers and remote professionals

The Chroy Changvar peninsula has much to recommend it. Despite being just a twenty minute tuk tuk ride from the city’s bustling riverside, it remains one of the quietest parts of the capital. This makes it an ideal base for those of us who like to hear the birds rather than the traffic. There is, or was, a dearth of comfortable places to get some work done without having to cross the bridge into the city proper. This changed with the recent relocation of The Lighthouse, formerly a Toul Tom Poung institution. Set in a borey – a gated residential community – the spacious patio offers comfortable fan-cooled seating under a mango tree.

Of course, writers and creatives need fuel, and owner Jaimie is renowned for his American-style cuisine, including the best burgers in Phnom Penh. Perfect for getting out of the city.

Java Creative Café Toul Kork

Java Creative Café Toul Kork in Phnom Penh, a popular café for digital nomads featuring art displays and quiet workspaces

One of the OGs of the capital’s hospitality scene, the first Java opened its doors in 2000, when livestock were a regular sight on the streets. They have kept up with the rapid development of Cambodia, with two locations still consistently ranking among the best coffee spots in town. While the Toul Tom Poung location features a dedicated theatre and performance space, the “Black Box”, our pick would have to be the Toul Kork venue.

Further north than many expats care to venture, the Toul Kork district can be overlooked. For those seeking some of the most-affordable but recently-built housing in Phnom Penh – and fewer distractions in the form of bars and nightlife, this spot is the perfect place to zero in and do what needs doing.

Maloop

Lush green work area at Maloop Café in Phnom Penh, a garden-style oasis perfect for digital nomads seeking nature and quiet

We hate to use cliches, but Maloop screams “hidden gem, green oasis, plethora of options”. The greenest public space in the city is in the unlikeliest of settings, Boeng Tumpun, a quiet Khmer neighbourhood just minutes from the city centre. Lush grounds with a huge number of cozy nooks and tree-shaded crannies mean you’ll have no problem finding a private space to focus. The simple pleasure of walking barefoot on grass is a rarity in Phnom Penh, but Maloop’s shaded manicured lawn gives you a chance to feel that all-important, but simple connection with the earth.

An in-house coffee shop and bar offers a variety of freshly-made fruit shakes or cocktails, while the restaurant features locally inspired dishes and Asian-European fusion. Try the duck and mushroom spring rolls or the stir-fried frog legs with red ants for a contemporary take on local fare.

Reset between deadlines with a stroll down one of the meandering garden paths or admire the latest exhibition at the park’s gallery space, set in an original 1960s villa, or simply lay down on the lawn with a book. Sometimes cliches are used for a reason.

The Desk

Digital nomads working at The Desk Phnom Penh, a modern coworking space in Cambodia’s capital with fast Wi-Fi and professional amenities

One for the dedicated among us, with hot desks available from$60 per month, The Desk comes with a CBD location and all the mod-cons you’d expect from a space which targets professionals on the road. Naturally, private offices and conference rooms are available, so in-person professional connections won’t be a problem. Some of the city’s fastest internet and an on-site café mean you’ll be able to lock in to head-down, productive mode.

The management team even run regular networking and mentorship events, so if you feel its time to take your online work into the physical world, this could be the perfect entry point.

Final Verdict: Best Café for Digital Nomads in Phnom Penh

Choosing the best café in Phnom Penh for digital nomads really depends on your rhythm. If unlimited drinks and a dedicated focus zone top your list, Suzie Time is a no-brainer. For lush greenery, Maloop brings nature into the workday, while Hummus House pairs productivity with stunning Mekong views. And for creatives who thrive on community and design, Workspace by Factory delivers a full ecosystem.

No matter your style, Phnom Penh’s café culture offers endless options for freelancers and remote workers, whether you’re dialing into Zoom, crafting a pitch, or simply enjoying a slow coffee between sprints. Wherever you choose, the city makes it easy to stay productive and inspired.

Just one and a half hours away by flight from Singapore is the Pearl of Asia, Phnom Penh. Moving past its military governance and French influence, the capital of Cambodia is shaping up to be a must-visit destination boasting a vibrant blend of history and modernity. While it may not be home to a Unesco World Heritage Site like the Angkor Wat, it sits at the confluence of three prominent rivers, Mekong, Tonlé Sap, and Tonlé Bassac, all of which make up the Mekong River system, affectionately known as the Mother of Waters. With such significance, coupled with friendly locals, don’t skip over the capital city on your next trip to Cambodia.

Whether planning an easy weekend getaway or seeking a deep dive into Cambodia’s rich culture and heritage, here’s what to see, do, and eat in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

How to Get Around?

Once you leave the airport, you will notice the swarm of motorcycles and tuk-tuks plying the streets. While these are the most common forms of transportation, taxis, car hires, and public buses are also viable options. Your GRAB app works here, so whip out your phones and book a ride in a car, a tuk-tuk, or a remork (a larger version of a tuk-tuk). Besides on-demand services, you can also rent a car or tuk-tuk for up to eight hours, paying approximately S$30 for a tuk-tuk and S$66 for a car. All prices are reflected in Cambodian Riel on the app.

Our journey from the airport to the city centre was mostly smooth sailing, with slow-moving traffic in some areas. Although the roads are wide, expect jams during peak hours when the roads are packed with thousands of motorcycles weaving through traffic.

While walking can be an excellent way to explore the city, it’s worth noting that pavements are sometimes non-existent. You’ll have to stay alert and enjoy the thrill of walking alongside the busy traffic. Unlike Singapore, there are fewer traffic lights, so pay extra attention when crossing the streets. We found drivers responding to our hands-up signal; make sure to cross from a visible spot and walk swiftly and decisively. Motorbikes and tuk-tuks will do their best to swerve around you, so don’t get startled and keep to your pace.

Where to Stay?

What to do in phnom penh cambodia
Rosewood Phnom Penh Mekong Suite

For a well-deserved weekend getaway, it’s worth the splurge to put up at Rosewood Phnom Penh. Occupying the top 14 floors of Vattanac Capital Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the city, Rosewood Phnom Penh boasts panoramic views of the city and the legendary Mekong River. And with its east-side facing, you’ll even get one of the best sunrise views from the comfort of your room. The 175-room hotel embraces local culture within its sophisticated, residential-style rooms, which feature plush furnishings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and intelligent controls. A little detail we enjoyed was the books on the table; they are engaging books, not coffee table books, that you will actually read. As part of the evening wind-down service, the hotel’s staff tidies the room and draws the curtains, creating a cosy atmosphere to sleep. They’ll even prepare a bottle of water -glass, not plastic – and leave little bedside treats. We can’t decide which we loved better – waking up to sweeping views of the river or winding down to the twinkling city lights in the bathtub (with no worries of peeping toms!)

Rosewood Phnom Penh’s fleet of Remork

The centrally located hotel is just minutes away from the Royal Palace by tuk-tuk and is within walking distance of the Central Market and the riverside. Book the hotel’s chic remork for a city tour, or immerse yourself in local art at the art gallery on the 35th floor. Enhance your getaway with a dip in the hotel’s indoor lap pool or catch up on fitness at the gym (with a view). Better yet, head to Sense Spa for a relaxing blend of Khmer remedies and modern techniques.

But if you are looking for funky hostel vibes, then the Mad Monkey Phnom Penh, located within the BKK1 district, is the place for you. Connect with fellow backpackers from all over the world at their Beer Garden or join one of their walking tours and pub crawls.

What to Do?

Visit Cultural and Historical Sites

what to do in phnom penh

Wat Phnom is a historical site and Buddhist temple that gave Phnom Penh its name. Legend has it that Lady Penh discovered four statues of Buddha hidden in a tree trunk that was washed up to the front of her house. She built this temple (Wat in Khmer) on top of a hill (Phnom in Khmer) to honour the Buddhas. As a Buddhist country, this carried so much significance that the city, named after Lady Penh, became the capital of the country. Explore the grandeur of the architecture, with its colourful story murals and intricately carved statues, and immerse in the history of Phnom Penh. Other cultural sites include the Royal Palace, which boasts a life-sized Buddha, and the National Museum of Cambodia, which houses the most extensive collection of Khmer cultural artefacts. And if you’re in the mood for some deep reflection, make a trip to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum to learn about the city’s tragic past.

Note: Ladies are required to cover their shoulders and legs when visiting the cultural attractions in Phnom Penh. T-shirts and sarongs are available for sale on-site.

Shop at the Markets

What to do in phnom penh cambodia
New Central Market image courtesy of Deposit Photos

A great way to go local is to visit the markets. The New Central Market, known to the locals as Phsar Thmei, is an Art Deco-inspired version of a traditional market. A dome sits at the centre, with the rest of the stalls organised into four areas. Popular with both locals and tourists, you can buy everything from fresh seafood to handicrafts, from homeware to jewellery and watches. For more artisanal woodcraft and silk products, the Russian Market, Phsar Toul Tom Poung, is the place to go. A favourite among the young locals is the Night Market, also known as Phsar Reatrey, for its wide variety of clothes, accessories and food stalls. Soak in the riverside vibes and enjoy live performances on the weekends.

Go on an Art Tour

Morning Art Tour with Viator

Go hunting for street art murals at Street 240. Weave through the laid-back bohemian streets filled with trendy shops, eateries, and bars. Or book a tour that’ll take you to the lesser-known areas for underground street art. Rosewood Phnom Penh guests can contact the concierge for an intimate guided tour by emerging Cambodian street artists who’ll take you to the city’s most instagrammable street art locations and hidden gems.

Explore the Bars and Nightlife

rooftop bar sora bar phnom penh

While the city may not be known for its bars (yet), its flourishing cocktail culture hints at a vibrant nightlife experience waiting to be discovered. As day turns to night, scale to Sora Bar, situated on the 37th floor of Vattanac Capital Mall, for the best rooftop bar experience in Phnom Penh. Its cantilevered terrace overlooks the city, with a sweeping view of the Mekong River. Read our review of Sora Bar here.

Bassac Street

With rows and rows of bars and eateries, Bassac Street is the city’s hotspot for after-dark bar hopping. Kick back at a dive bar or soak in the energy at live entertainment bars. As you traverse the alleys, keep your eyes peeled for quirky little bars like the Victorian-styled White Rabbit for its bespoke cocktails.

Samai Distillery and Bar

For a taste of locally distilled spirits, visit the Samai Distillery on Thursdays as the distillery transforms into a bar serving Samai rum-based cocktails. Local flavours come into play with the Samai Kampot Pepper Rum; try it in the Pepper-Vanilla Old Fashioned or the Basil Beauty. Gin lovers will love the smoothness of Mawsim Gin, infused with local fruits, herbs and spices like peppercorns, cardamom, and more. Enjoy gin-based cocktails at Mawsim Distillery and Bar by reservation only.

What to Eat?

One of the best ways to enjoy Khmer cuisine is to feast on street food. Look for the cluster of stalls in the markets or along the riverside and slurp up some Nom banh chok or Khmer noodles. It might remind you of Vietnamese Pho, except it comes in a fish-based gravy made with lemongrass, kaffir lime, and turmeric root. The typical breakfast fare, Bai sach chrouk, is a grilled pork and rice dish that you can easily find anywhere. The most popular Cambodian dish, Fish Amok, which looks similar to otak, is a fish mousse made with coconut milk and Khmer curry wrapped in a banana leaf.

Eleven One Kitchen

For accessible Khmer flavours, Eleven One Kitchen – a 99% plastic-free restaurant – offers a menu of Cambodian dishes with Western techniques. Besides the Fish Amok Burger (USD6.25), don’t miss the Stir-fried Beef Curry (USD5.50) and Kampot Shrimp and Crispy Noodle Salad (USD5.75). For authentic home-cooked dishes, make your way to Banteay Srey for Morning Glory Stir Fried With Beef And Red Ants (USD4) and crowd-favourite Grilled Chicken with Cashew Nuts (USD6.75).

Brasserie Louis Brunch

Splurge at Brasserie Louis at Rosewood Phnom Penh for French and Cambodian flavours. Choose from their extensive a la carte menu or indulge in a bottomless Sunday Brunch (USD70) with fresh seafood, live pastry stations, and classic French and Cambodian favourites prepared à-la-minute.

There’s just something about gazing upon a city’s skyline with a cocktail in hand that compels us to visit rooftop bars. It could be the sensory feast from a bird’s eye view or the sense of escape from the city into the sky. Add a rooftop bar with great vibes and delicious drinks, like Sora Bar, into your Cambodia travel itinerary, and you’ll have a winning night out. What’s more, you’ll be greeted by the sunkissed views of Phnom Penh by sunset, alongside the glistening Great River, Mekong River. In our recent visit to Rosewood Phnom Penh, we explored Sora Bar and learnt these five reasons why this rooftop bar in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, should be on your travel list.

It’s on the World’s 50 Best Discovery List

Sora Bar had just been inducted into the World’s 50 Best Discovery list, a recognition from the World’s 50 Best Bars Academy. The diverse list features expert-recommended restaurants and bars, celebrating everything from local favourites to emerging talents. To be eligible for inclusion, a bar must garner a significant number of votes from more than 680 industry experts during the most recent polling for The World’s 50 Best Bars. A testament to the team’s dedication to quality cocktail and bar experiences, this accolade marks Sora Bar as a top bar destination in Phnom Penh, solidifying its position in the burgeoning cocktail culture in Cambodia.

It’s Vibing Indoors and Outdoors

Standing tall in the heart of Phnom Penh is the Vattanac Capital Tower, of which Rosewood Phnom Penh resides on the 14 uppermost floors. Sora Bar, with Sora translating to sky in Japanese, is perched on the 37th floor. The rooftop bar in Phnom Penh sits on a stunning cantilevered terrace, with cocktail tables and booth seatings arranged around the circular central bar, offering guests an expansive view of the Cambodian capital and the storied Mekong River. Our visit to the bar was opportune; we arrived just in time to catch the sunset spectacle. Even with the tropical heat on, it didn’t deter us from basking in the views while sipping champagne on the deck. However, we recommend bringing your sunglasses. At night, the outdoor terrace glowed amidst the dark sky, casting an intimate and relaxing vibe, making it an excellent spot for date nights.

The indoor space features fine wood furnishings, plush seats, floor-to-ceiling windows, and an impressive metal chandelier that lends elegant curves. Head to one of the booth seats for an intimate time with a view, or join in the conviviality with jazzy tunes by the live musicians. And if it’s live bar action you desire, the counter seats are up for grabs.

Not forgetting whisky lovers, a sleek and stylish Whisky Library and Cigar Lounge sits adjacent to the bar’s entrance. Think leather seats, wing-back armchairs, and dark wood finishings. With the Mekong River as the back bar, we recommend sitting at the counter while you imbibe the widest selection of dark spirits in Cambodia.

It’s a Fusion of Cultures

Working and crafting with local ingredients is one of the best ways to showcase the unique features of a locale. And Sora Bar does this with a spark of imagination in its Book of Yokai menu. Weaving local ingredients with Japanese folklore, 12 cocktails and four mocktails tell the stories of four mythological characters, each embodying one of four Cambodian ingredients.

Starting with the country’s staple, Rice, represented by the powerful and wise Japanese Dragon, is found in God of the Seas. The smoky twist on a dry martini featured brown rice and rice vinegar mixed with London Dry Gin and Dry Vermouth and finished with a spritz of sea smoke. Legend has it that a hint of smoke precedes the appearance of this creature who oversees abundant agricultural harvests. The dragon princess’ love story in Jewel Princess is a spirit-forward mix of Premier Cru Cognac, Chinato Vermouth, and Amaro Averna with Genmaicha, speaking of the passions between the lovers.

The menu pairs Tanuki, the mischievous shapeshifter with a sweet tooth, with Sugar Palm in Shapeshifter, which sees Cashew Nut Aged Rum and Scotch Whisky stirred in with Miso Sugar Palm. And Cambodia’s black gold, Kampot Pepper, makes its appearance in the stories of Kitsune, with the lively SORA 75, an aromatic twist to classic champagne cocktails. With its long nose reminiscent of a banana, cocktails from stories of the Tengu focus on Cambodia’s national fruit. The Crown Collins boasts flavours from the entire banana plant, mixed with Caribbean Rum, Kaffir Lime, and Soda for a dry and slightly bitter finish.

*all cocktails here are priced at USD$12

Over at the Whisky Library, the new menu serving whisky-based cocktails is built around a tribute to the five sacred samurai swords, Tenka-Goken. Presented in a journal format, the menu includes concoctions like the light and earthy The Imperial (USD$15), featuring Scotch whisky-infused dry figs, Campari, and Japanese umeshu, and the Rosary (USD$15), a take on Japanese Highball with Westward Whiskey.

It’s More than just Cocktails.

While cocktails are the highlight at Sora Bar, their food is just as good. The modest selection of hot and cold snacks ranges from sashimi to yakitori and sliders, perfectly complementing the cocktail menu. Line your stomach with skewered Wagyu BBQ (USD$19) or some Yakitori (USD$6), grilled chicken with tare sauce. Leave it to the chef for the Nigiri Five Kinds (USD$17), or enjoy a refreshing Tuna Tataki (USD$15) drizzled with honey dressing.

It’s Stirring Up A Cocktail Revolution

sora bar

Sora Bar is not just setting the bar; it’s raising it with its monthly rotation of guest shifts, bringing some of the best mixologists from the World’s 50 Best Bars to Cambodia. Delighting the city’s cocktails aficionados, this rooftop bar in Phnom Penh has welcomed guests from Hong Kong’s COA( #1 bar on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2023), Rome’s Drink Kong (#16 on World’s 50 Best Bars 2023), and Barcelona’s Paradiso (#1 on World’s 50 Best Bars 2022). On top of delivering exceptional guest experiences with drinks from around the world, this initiative also enriches the local bar community through masterclasses and networking opportunities.

Sora Bar is located at Vattanac Capital Tower, 66 Monivong Boulevard, Sangkat Wat Phnom, Khan Daun Penh, 120211, Phnom Penh, Kingdom of Cambodia, p.+855 23 936 888. Open daily 5 pm -12am.

It’s always a shame when quaint properties are torn down to make way for newer and shinier projects, but sometimes, something quite spectacular emerges. In this case, it’s an old riverside hostel along the banks of Siem Reap River that’s been transformed into Treeline Urban Resort, a gleaming tribute to Cambodia’s rich art and creative pedigree.

The rooftop infinity pool is located on the second floor with stunning views across the river.

Three years in the making, the result is a striking 48-room masterpiece combining cubist and linear design with influences from Japanese minimalism, Nordic functionality, and naturally, Cambodian art. It’s really a staggering combination that’s to be expected of the young Cambodian-born architect Hok Kang, the man behind projects like Phnom Penh’s Embassy Central BKK1 and Brown Roastery.

Guests travelling to Angkor Wat can revel in the luxury property’s installations and exhibitions, which currently features local emerging and celebrated artists such as Sopheap Pich and Sothea Tang. On view at the Treeline Gallery is Ti Prasap, an exhibition of rarely-seen contemporary Cambodian art curated from the private collection of Australian Larry Strange. Plus, the gallery is open and free for the public.

Treeline is masterfully designed together with leading Cambodian artists in mind, and their works can be observed all throughout the hotel.

Kang’s vision is all about connecting to the nature as much as possible. Overhanging plants and vines offer shades and serve as juxtaposition to the clean lines of sustainably-sourced native timber and stone. Treeline’s most important feature is its leafy mid-century Modern courtyard in the middle of the property, with trees aplenty and a large cascading water feature, Cosmic Wheel, by the HKA architectural team.

The rooms themselves are spacious and inspired by the immediate environment — the hotel is surrounded by ancient treetops. Simple furnishings deliver understated modern vibes, and a muted colour palate gives a natural feel. But look closer and you find subtle elements of old Cambodian heritage all around, from textiles and decorative ceramics to the assorted sculptures. Even the staff uniforms are designed and produced by local designer Sokna.

The property’s curated experience includes dedicated spaces for a growing private collection of contemporary art.

Other elements at Treeline include Suri Spa, the rooftop pool and Canopy Bar, and airy Hok Noodle Bar & Grill, where Pan-Asian dishes are complemented with massive wall art. Needless to say, everything is highly aesthetic in appeal.

Treeline Urban Resort is located at Achasva Street Wat Bo Village, Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia, p. +855 63 961 234. Introductory rates start from US$180 per night.

Film warriors, are you ready? The Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) 2019 returns from 21 November to 1 December, but as always, the festivities start a little earlier – a two-part sneak preview for what lies ahead. Keep your eyes peeled for Travelling Waves, a film screening programme that’s currently in the midst of its Southeast Asian tour. Or stay local through film screenings and panel dialogues with New Waves on 12 and 13 July.

Read on for the deets on what’s happening for the 30th edition of SGIFF, and every reason you need to attend this year.

It’s Bigger Than Ever

And I mean it, literally. This year, SGIFF is reaching out to the wider Southeast Asian audience way ahead of its annual showcase. Traveling Waves, a newly-launched multi-city programme that’s currently on its tour, presents five films from Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore.

Collaborating with independent screening venues around the SEA region, it kicked off in Bangkok, traveled down to Jakarta, and will end with Kuala Lumpur on 20 July. Whether you’re curious about the local film scene, or wanting to show support for our talents, these are worth the watch.

Get details on the Travelling Waves edition here.

We Finally Get The Female Perspective

Part of the Singapore segment New Waves will examine the female gaze this 13 July. Tackling issues on relationships, motherhood, the female sexuality, and notions of femininity, Through Her Eyes is a showcase of stories as seen through the female voice.

Moderated by Leong Pui Yee, the chosen short films are heartwarming, and a refreshing albeit teary journey for the audience. Experience the struggles of an immigrant in Gladys Ng’s Ying & Summer, and chase your own dreams with Duong Dieu Linh’s Mother, Daughter, Dreams. Then, empathise with the overworked nurse in Vinegar Baths by Amanda Nell Eu). It’s something we need to hear: the collective female voice on what it means to be a woman in Southeast Asia.

Through Her Eyes (screening and dialogue session) is happening on 13 July 2019, 11am-1pm, at *Scape Gallery. Tickets are priced at $5, and a bundle of 4 for $15. For more information, see here.

Talking Film With Those Who’ve Been There, Done That

It’s not every day that you can get up close and personal with successful filmmakers. If you’ve been pondering on the behind-the-scenes, from voice to setting choices and perspectives, we’ve got a treat for you: New Waves will feature various panel discussions for you to ask questions.

There’s a specific discussion we think is worth checking out. Is Cinema Story Or Poetry?, mediated by Singaporean writer Alfian Sa’at, will see filmmakers Amanda Nell Eu, Nicole Midori Woodford, Nelson Yeo, and M Raihan Halim discussing how they choose their narrative style, and their art of weaving together images and sound.

Panel Discussion:Is Cinema Story Or Poetry? is happening on 13 July 2019, 6-7pm, at *Scape Gallery. Tickets are priced at $5, and a bundle of 4 for $15. For more information, see here.

SGIFF Call For Entry 2019

Are you an aspiring filmmaker who’s looking for an audience? If yes, look no further. The 30th SGIFF Call For Entry is open now till 6pm on 19 August. They’re currently accepting entries for Feature and Short Films, Southeast Asian Film Lab, and the Youth Jury & Critics Programme. Give it a shot, and your work might just be screened this November!

Visit the SGIFF website here for submission guidelines and more information.
